Brazil Is More Concerned with World Cup and Olympics than the Survival of Many PDF Print E-mail
2011 - June 2011
Written by Cristovam Buarque

Christ the Redeemer in soccer jersey Recently, while visiting the Tunisian immigrants impeded from entering France, presidential candidate Marine Le Pen told them frankly that France has no room for them. Some years ago, such a declaration would have been repudiated as illogical and immoral. Today it is accepted as electorally logical and positive.

What has changed since then is the observation that there is no room for everyone to enjoy the same standard of consumption as the rich, be it in France, Brazil or even Tunisia itself.

By the way, the flight of the Tunisians and the other immigrants from the poor countries is occurring because the rich of their countries, sharing Ms. Le Pen's opinion, push their poor towards the world of the rich outside their borders.

Two hundred years ago our civilization was based upon the confluence of three propositions: economic growth, social justice and political democracy. Suddenly, the perception of the ecological crisis, global warming, and scarcity of resources - of the limits to economic growth, in other words - is threatening this confluence.

The continuation of growth for all will render unfeasible the future towards which Our Boat Called Earth has been navigating for 200 years under the aegis of industrial civilization. There is no room for everyone to consume the goods directed towards the high- and medium-income consumers. Projections show that this course will lead to the shipwreck of the Boat.

One can perceive this from the current crises, not only the ecological ones, but also the financial and fiscal ones impeding the maintenance of well-being acquired through financing and through depredating nature. That course will lead inevitably to the shipwreck of the boat of industrial civilization.

There are two other alternatives to save this course. We can continue along the same route, while excluding two-thirds of humanity from the boat. That alternative is represented in the film "2012," in which, faced with an ecological catastrophe, those who can buy passage for the limited number of spaces board boats to save themselves. The film is a metaphor for the French presidential candidate's speech.

Yet another alternative exists: changing the course of the Boat. What is necessary for this are structural, ideological and even mental changes in the concepts, sentiments, and desires already implanted in the population's imagination.

It would be necessary to redefine progress, reorienting the economic growth from private short-term material goods without ecological consideration towards growth based upon public long-term cultural goods with a commitment to ecological balance.

It would also be necessary to redefine social justice because, in this new course, the dishonest illusion of unlimited income and consumption growth for everyone cannot be maintained. Some of the benefits won by salaried employees, such as the private automobile and early retirement will no longer be viable in the long term for everyone.

Democracy itself will have to be redefined: its local and short-term practice will have to be limited by international decisions. Democracy is not made through the individual will and sovereignty of the voters of each country without taking into consideration the will of their neighbors in all Our Boat Earth.

In June of 2012, during the "Rio+20" meeting, the world will have a rare chance to chart the course for the New Boat. This will depend upon the representation of the Chiefs of States and other leaders who take part, upon the agenda that will be discussed and upon the commitments that will be signed.

No one has more responsibility for the success or failure of this meeting than President Dilma. She must use her political leadership to convince world leaders to come to Brazil.

She must also offer efficient infrastructure and lead in the creation of a Letter from Rio to the World, reaffirming that Our Boat is for everyone and defining the lines for the course to be followed - the construction of alternative development.

Unfortunately, this may be no more than a dream since the population does not appear to believe in the risks of progress nor does it demonstrate any desire to change the course of the Boat.

In addition, Brazil appears to be more concerned with the two other international events it will be hosting. Knowing how to score more goals in the 2014 World Cup and who will jump the highest in the 2016 Olympics seems to be considered more important than how many people will survive thanks to the decisions made in 2012 at "Rio+20."

Ricardo: Senator Buarque should check my blog and watch the videos about exponential growth here:
http://thefinalcollapseoftheus...of-us.html

When Senator Buarque says: “Our Boat is for everyone” - I hope he is not saying that anybody from any country can move to Brazil if they want to. That it would be a disaster for Brazil and to the Brazilian people who live in Brazil today.

He should read an article that I wrote years ago as follows:

Brazil the best place in the planet in the 21st century
written by Ricardo C. Amaral, June 01, 2011

Ricardo: As Senator Buarque said on his article: “in the film "2012," in which, faced with an ecological catastrophe, those who can buy passage for the limited number of spaces board boats to save themselves” - In global terms our country Brazil is that boat of the film 2012.

Brazil is one the most privileged countries in the world today, rich in all kinds of untapped natural resources, plenty of freshwater, and if managed well Brazil can become very quickly one of the best places in the planet in the 21st century with a high standard of living of a large part of its population.

Just look to see how the people of china ( the poor ) lost out when the country hosted the Olympics.

Go to the street and speek to the people who are being left out of homes, jobs, business, so the better off can get better off by standing on the heads of the poor.

Who will get the blame when Brazil fails to provide what the world expects of the country hosting such events.and how long will it take to pay off such a large dept and where will the money come from.

Before you load your boat with the worlds peoples see what they will demand of you at the table, schools, Medical, housing.

Brazil needs to look the the EU and the USA who have given all to thoes who have come and now demanding more and more while giving back nothing.

the goverment will take from its own to buy votes from the ones they give too.

hay Joe how is it going!!!!

Dear Brazzil Magazine,

Like every year, United Nations Volunteer is calling for nominations for the Online Volunteering Award. With the award, we recognize the contributions that online volunteers make to peace and development and we tell their stories to the world.

The tenth Anniversary of the International Year of Volunteers is in full swing, celebrating volunteerism across the world. 2011 is also the International Year of Forests, which aims to raise awareness on sustainable management, conservation and development of forests. Human development and the environment are intertwined, and volunteers are essential to both. In this edition of the newsletter, we feature the example of 22 online volunteers from 11 countries, who supported the UNESCO World Heritage Forest programme in advocating for forest conservation in the context of the International Year of Forests. Check out these websites.....

Actually I have already quit the diplomatic corps but I still getting emails and phone calls from some diplomats. I am not sure Senor João why they do that. The last time I received special invitation by His Excellency the Palestinian Ambassador which by right he should invite someone from the Brazilian embassy or even Venezuela embassy here in my country because at that time Senor Lula and Senor Hugo (Boss) Chavez was busy promoting the illegal war in Gaza but instead they want me to be there....and yesterday, I was invited by an ex-ambassador to have a chat with him. I'll try to ignore him but he keeps on calling me many, many times.....

I told them that I am no longer working with any government of the world but I am not sure why they do that to me and anyway I'll still help them on volunteering basis only without getting any payment because I still have faith in peace......anyway the ex-ambassador wants to pay me this time and he hopes that I will call him back. He wants me to get involve with diplomatic corps again on part-time basis when I simply told him that I am not too crazy about politics.......You see João I don't have no time for no monkey business....

Anyway, Senor João keep in touch for more news......

After a recent visit to Sp, never to be repeated I add. Brasil is let by corruption from government to its people. Brazil is a ticking time bomb that is waiting to explode at a guess approx 8 years time. The country suffers "social aparteid" and the people of the country are so passive its like they dont care. Brazil is a complex country due to its inhabitants most of which are European Immigrants, they care of nothing for the future as long as today they were happy. The Amazon has been protected by the original inhabitants who know how to look after the Amazon but Brazilians if you want to wreck your country you are doing a very good job with your concrete jungles but your stupidity has had a profound inpact on the rest of the world with global warming. You celebrate the fact you have the Olympics god only knows why a little internal infastructure trains schools etc in the middle of the country is far more pressing. The econay which you think is good? At the moment due to its past Brasilians just shop like its the first time they have been able to like kids in a sweet shop. A government that unwisely spends or pockets the money. If only you people could se what is coming in Brasil history always repeats. I have never vistied a country in such a mess, due to Brasil being so young family life is being destroyed as you have no way of passing down through generations of family life. Divorce is rife and it would seem you conduct your lives on telenovas. Oh if anyone could tell me the point of holding the Olympics in Brasil I am willing to listen, anyone who is educated out there must sit and realise this is going to be an absolute embaresment to you. Of all the BRIC countrys I know one thing Brasil will fail in the end mainly due to the mentality of the people of Brasil, Russia China India have one big difference to you they have discipline and you need to learn that. A totally false 8th richest economy, the bust is coming along with crime you have never known, forget your 15 Reals in your pocket to get rid or get shop, kidnappings ATMS will be increasing 10 fold. Boy the one thing I appreciated most on my UK return was my freedom to walk, not live in a high rise building drive my car, and for that I thank the British police and for the people of England who help them keep our country free to walk around. Brazilians are at present looking at history living in Victorian times with their maids etc, a woman should look after their husbands children and homes stop partying so much and teach your future generation skills.

Actually I find it rather interesting to have friends from various background and walk of life. When I was in the gov.com I find it rather difficult to deal with protocol because different countries have different standards of protocol.
