Why My Fellow Brazilian Expats Should Head Back Home to Brazil PDF Print E-mail
2011 - June 2011
Written by Jose Ricardo Aguilar
Wednesday, 15 June 2011 20:13

Brazilian Day in New York When did Brazilians become so afraid of adapting? We constantly hear our fellow Brazilians living abroad talking about how much they miss home, but they also say it is impossible for them to go back and readapt to their old lives. Brazilians living abroad say they are so accustomed to their new "foreign" lives that it is hard to picture living in the tropical regions of Latin America again.

This includes young adults who received an education abroad. Yes, perhaps there is some truth in this way of thinking, but, forgive me for saying so, going back is just not that difficult. Going back and readapting to the very place we came from could be the best thing for an individual - especially if this person can contribute to the growth of the country.

While living abroad, many of us have received training, mastered certain skills, and increased our overall knowledge. Many of us have become better human beings with nurtured abilities capable to influence and improve things around with little effort.

A good number of Brazilian citizens living abroad carry with them a great amount of knowledge and expertise. These are, for instance, the people who should be heading back and guiding the country forward. The new knowledge we have acquired here is what we should keep and then apply where it is needed.

Brazil was always (and will be always) very different from the United States. The U.S. perfected democracy over the last 225 years while Brazil has struggled to maintain its democracy over the last 100 years. The styles of life today between the two countries are also very different.

Most Americans live to achieve their personal goals in the long run while most Brazilians like to live one day at a time. The United States today is home to more than 1.1 million Brazilians. This unfortunately serves to explain the image of Brazil from many years ago - not only a country consumed by corruption and violence, but a place where millions of its own people felt the urge to leave and restart their lives somewhere else.

But the curious fact here is that, many years ago, we moved and we adapted. A good number of us, Brazilians, started moving to other countries and remained there. When we moved, we figured out how to blend in the lifestyles of Europe, Asia, and America while still preserving our true Brazilian ethnicity.

Our own culture is reshaped by foreign influences too. Even before the 1800's, Brazil had welcomed immigrants from Portugal, and later on, people from the rest of Europe and Asia. Excluding the thousands of Portuguese emigrants who fled with the royal family to the former capital of Rio de Janeiro, most immigrants were brought with the main intent to work in the discovery of minerals and also benefit the agricultural industry, which has traditionally been the foundation of Brazil's economy.

In addition to these immigrants, we also have the African influences that were brought in even earlier by slaves. The Brazilian population as we know shows the end-result of the "melting pot" the US has claimed to be producing.

Americans have for many years talked about how multiculturalism will eventually reshape the North American culture in the many years to come, but the reality is that this is old news in good-old Brazil. Our last names are Spanish, Italian, Japanese, Portuguese, and the list goes on. Few are the Brazilians with real native family names, if any at all.

Our appearances are unique and modeled by the looks of all peoples inside and outside of our country. Brazilians can look like Indians, Koreans, Germans, Italians... the Brazilian people can look like everybody else. This is not to say that Brazilians do not have a particular look, but our unique combination of looks is what defines our people.

This shows that Brazilians have long been adapting into our very own country even before the 1800's. We have not been there forever; our families have not been there forever. Our own ancestors were once newcomers to the very place we call home, and we seem to have adapted very well, don't we?

This is why Brazilians can actually go back home and do well. The difficulty in dealing with the idea of going back has to do with the transformation our psychology goes through after moving away from home. During our first couple years in America, as an example, we see ourselves as outsiders trying to blend in. We work like maniacs to feed our lives back home. We live a double life.

But this only goes on until we realize we must pick one of these lives in order to simply live better. That is when we begin making fewer phone calls back home. That is when we start being more selfish and taking care of ourselves better. That is when we send less money to our kinfolks.

We eventually realize that we can have a more comfortable "new life," but in order to have that, more means have to be invested in ourselves alone. Then we develop a valid and reasonable counter-argument to comfort our desire to stay: perhaps the reason we do not want to go back home is because we enjoy both the comfort and convenience this new "American" life provides us.

The better quality of life in America is certainly another force that makes us want to stay and not go back. It is normal not to want to go back to a place that slapped us on the face 20 to 25 years ago, and instead, we feel safer to stay in a developed environment that gives opportunities even during the greatest economic chaos since the Great Depression.

It is much easier to want to identify ourselves with a place that treats us better. From our past memories, home has always given us less room to move around. It has glued our feet to the floor and impeded us from even trying to climb the steps of the economic classes.

America is a completely different place (or at least, has been for the most part). Uncle Sam actually allows us, peoples of all races and backgrounds, to start fresh and make money if we work hard, which is not the case in other places such as Brazil.

For those without a college degree, working in the US as a plumber or electrician can pay just as much, if not way more. obviously, a college degree will be useful for the rest of our lives, but in the sake of this argument, working as a plumber assistant will help pay the bills and more for a certain period of time.

The opportunities the Brazilian economy offers are not as abundant yet, but steadily and slowly, they are improving. As we know (and as we hear all the time), the Brazilian economy is getting better. Jobs are being created like never before. Foreign investment is being injected in the economy everyday. Infrastructure and education are finally being considered for improvements.

Women have better opportunities. Hunger and poverty are looked at as old shameful habits and being tackled by the government. Violence in the big cities is finally bothering politicians. Brazil is addressing its problems and aiming for better days in the future.

Of course some old habits will never break (or maybe they will just take longer). Habits that cannot seem to go away are, for instance, a national soccer team on a streak of disappointment, or soap-operas insisting on slowing down the brains of those watching them, or rich families hiring 24/7 cleaning ladies and stripping them away of any chance of succeeding with their own lives.

Brazil is still as good as the old days, but this time, it is moving towards the better days. With all the experience and knowledge we have acquired from living abroad, we make up an useable force for the Brazilian economy - young adults, especially.

These are people with innovative ways of thinking that can revolutionize the old-school management style of Brazil. Even though our economy is moving upward, our political system of today is only a modern reflection of what it was in the recent post-dictatorship: old ideas to solve old problems.

Young people who went to universities abroad nurtured different ways of thinking. They carry different perspectives and universal ideals that can be applied when trying to solve the stubborn problems of Brazil. This is not to say that Brazilian students attending colleges abroad are better, they are just better prepared because of the extra experiences they go through and opportunities they have.

The article "Amid Growing Pains Brazil Wonders When It Will Bridge Gap Between Emerging and Emerged," published in Brazzil Magazine - http://www.brazzil.com/component/content/article/232-may-2011/10481-amid-growth-pains-brazil-wonders-when-it-will-bridge-gap-between-emerging-and-emerged.html - talks in greater depth about the underdeveloped educational system inside Brazil. When closely compared, it is evident that the American universities are producing better professionals and are in much better shape than the Brazilian ones.

So maybe the freezing temperatures of New York or the humid weather of Florida has eaten our memories of the tropical beauty of Brazil. Or perhaps the decreasing value of the dollar is still good for everybody - as long as the real stops trying to catch up to it.

Based on its (recent) history, Brazil has given us many reasons to run away from home and never to come back. Recently, it started with the dictatorship, then went to the destruction created by the bad moves of Fernando Collor de Mello, and finally, it moved to the escalating violence and the lack of opportunity for the rest of the people.

But today, times are different. Brazil is not yet a fully developed superpower, and it may take a few decades to get there, but we can help the country get there faster. The catch here is that we will need to do some weight lifting.

We do no good if we move back and wait with our arms crossed for better days. Moving back will require some individual efforts. We cannot simply hitch a ride on a growing economy and catch the products as they trickle down - if we do that, we will actually slow down the process of development - we must apply the knowledge and abilities we have acquired abroad in order to push the country forward.

The only headache here will be to update all documents and get used to the excessive bureaucracy again. Despite this little inconvenience we will be able to enjoy a very cold beer at bar do Zé followed by a churrasco later in the afternoon.

I was told that Brazilian passports are sought after by international criminals because anybody can look like Brazilians and Brazilians can look like anybody.
Going home
written by Simpleton, June 16, 2011
It's not just foreign educated Brasilians that ultimately don't go home and make their professional lives function there. The same can be said for those from India. Even those who previously went back and had comfy jobs including a private office with a view with international firms still, as they were given a way out, landed in foreign soils and will probably choose to stay on foreign soils even when their jobs and income level turned a bit south as they say.

Brazuca, not directly on topic (I second Joao's lauding of the article) but an astute comment you've made. Although I am not an international criminal, I have been accused of being a Brasilian and, on one occasion, a trafficante (due to the "family" nature of the party I was at and all the diverse places I had been observed to have popped up at over the years). But wait a minute, now that I think about it, I was once accused of being a Texan too so maybe there possibly is something about my appearance and adaptive skills with regards to local accents and mannerisms that make people believe I am sinister.

Bridgeport? Is that near Milford?

Many Brazilians include other south americans are leaving the US (South Florida) for one reason: Lack of jobs to support their family and pay rent/mortgages. That's a sad reality that I hear on daily bases.
You are completely mistaken, my friend...
written by Tereza da Cruz Thompson, June 16, 2011
You are completely mistaken my friend when affirm that Brazil is walking to improve the life of the people. In oppose for it, my friend, the country is walking the wide steps for the Nazi/facism/communism, that is, we have about of 40 to 50 thousand violent deaths per year and the government only creates laws to protect outlaws. The presse are censured and does not tell the truth of the corruption that run free for the government in all the levels. I feel disappoint you but I imagine that you are so long out of the country and lost some important things whichare happening. Any way, my best wishes to you.
I would have to disagree with the above comment
written by Rachel's rantings in Rio, June 16, 2011
Tereza, I would have to disagree with you there. As an American living in Rio de Janeiro, I think that Brazil is quite far from Nazi/facism/communism. Yes there are deaths. There are in the US too. Adn everyone knows about the corruption. That is one way that Brazil is better than my country. You don't think we have the corruption?! Of course we do, it's just better hidden. Be glad yours is in the open.

As for living here, it has changed so much in the last 7 years. So much! Business is booming and foreign educated people have a huge edge!

Plus the family life here is amazing! It is so kid friendly!

I say give adaptation a try. You can always go back!

the majority of brazilian nationals in the usa are illegal
written by us observer, June 17, 2011
what the author failed to say is that the majority of brazilian nationals in the usa are illegal aliens . yes thats right, "illegal aliens".so lets do the math on the real numbers of brazilian nationals in the usa by tracking the many brazilian nationals who somehow get a tourist visa and head to the usa with the deliberate intent on violating the terms of their tourist visa by overstaying and then becoming immigration law fugitives "illegal presence" and their propensity to commit identity thefts, financial frauds, counterfeit documents, illegal international money transfer, income tax evasion,etc.,etc...in other words they form their own "underground economy"..americans and this is the vast majority of americans want illegal aliens apprehended, detained, and deported to their country of origin ..illegals certainly are not receiving a welcome mat from america..the trafficking /smuggling of brazilian nationals to the usa via mexico, canada, the bahamas, is a problem that the usa should not have to put up with and brazil needs to wise up and stop this international criminal activitie that starts in brazil..a good start would be for brazil to call home their nationals in the usa illegally .the future for illegal aliens in the usa is arrest and deportation ..americans are fed up with the whole business of illegals pilfering the economy, driving up crime ,and raiding its social services systems.

Now sir,

You know perfectly well that you are not entitled to point out facts like that. If everyone is held to equal standards, what kind of world would this be?

Since you bring up the subject though, the Brazilians I know that lived in the U.S. illegally overstayed visas and actually came from rather well to do backgrounds. Life in America with no income taxes and free health care has been very good for them. Some have been deported, some still feed on it.

Adn everyone knows about the corruption. That is one way that Brazil is better than my country. You don't think we have the corruption?! Of course we do, it's just better hidden. Be glad yours is in the open.

That's what I told the taxi driver driving me to the airport. In countries like America, the corruption is practiced with more finesse. And there's much, much larger amounts in question -- billions and billions instead of millions.

Look at the military-industrial complex. You think the Joint Strike Fighter, for example, is really that expensive to build -- all those cost blow-outs and overruns? The Russians will make just a good or better plane for a fraction of the cost, and always have. There's humungous corruption going on in the US military-industrial complex, milking the public purse for all it's worth.

The difference between Brazil and the US is that the corrupt in the US are scared of the general public, because if the public finds out, all hell with break loose. Whereas the public in Brazil will not do anything (Brazilians are conflict-averse) and will prefer to just avoid government and find their own way around the maze of obstacles calling itself government. It's like the Italians in the Second World War. They knew it was all BS anyway so didn't bother to fight and avoided it as much as possible. The more gullible populations would charge at macine-gun nests with gusto for ... I dunno, patriotism, a flag, freedom, etc. As General Smedley Butler subsequently recognized, war is a racket.

Brazilians know they're being screwed. Americans don't know they're being screwed (but are slowly waking up to it). Americans won't easily put up with crap, so will have to be controlled with elaborate lies and narratives. Brazilians won't confront the crap but will calmly find a way around it. That's the difference.

Illegal in USA?
written by Alanzihno, June 20, 2011
Our good friend us observer wants to know how anyone could go illegally into another country. How does he think his ancestors got to America? Did thePilgrim religious fanatics land on Plymouth Rock with green cards in hand? Or Bibles and guns? Sorry, observer, it's all stolen land, those United States. And you're paranoid because someone else wants part of the goods your ancestors stole. If you really believed what you said, you'd be trying to go back to the European slum your ancestors came from and you'd hand over "your" land back to its rightful Native owners.

You Can't Always Go Back Home
written by Bob S., June 25, 2011
It's very easy to have a positive attitude about returning to Brasil, and citing the many positive changes to Brasilian society. However, expats who have gained experience and knowledge, and who have lived abroad for a number of years, often find it difficult to assimilate into the job market. Why? Because the very fact that they have international experience and professional knowledge and skills means that potential employers overlook them. Direct supervisors feel threatened and may be less apt to hire someone who potentially knows more about their industry than they do. Job security begins with the person who has one. Another reason is that expats with wider experience and knowledge may find themselves competing in a job market that is still 10-15 years behind in terms of standards.

While returning expats have a lot to offer Brasil, they still have to face the old school mentalities that pervade every sector. It takes more than a positive attitude to do that.

Sir. Live in Idaho , Dakotas or Montana? Reads like you are an important member of the hate groups that tend to mix with the good people in those states.
First you must be ready to spend the billions of Dollars (have you noticed that do use capitalization when required?) to simply bus the illegals to the nearest border; second you must be ready to pay the price for the food that you will eat when harvested by minimum wage earning workers, for the delays when checking in at hotels due to lack of cleaning personnel, for paying prohibitive prices for any mechanical work done to your vehicles due to less competition by the capable, and cheaper, mechanics the are in the US illegaly, and the list goes on.
In regards to Brazil, you should clean-up your mouth before uttering the name of the country. It is larger than your continental US, it could feed the world, as it has the largest agricultural ready territory in the world, unlike the US, the cattle (largest number of heads in the world) doesn't need to be ration fed, as the soil provides for it (unlike the US), it has 80% of the country in the tropic, allowing for multiple harvests annualy, it has grown to be an industrial power and it has an eco-system that is evied by your Country, that is trying as much as it can to take control of.
Should you one day, even if I doubt it, dare to step out of your front door and, to the world's amazement, decide to visit other countries, and of all places decide to risk visiting the "swamps"of Brazil, you will find a multitude of welcoming, warm, frindly, joyfull and forgiving people, very much to your dismay I am sure. I imagine you enjoy the company of idiots such as yourself thus would find Brazilians to be fools.
On the other hand I am honest and recognize the problems in Brazil: The violence that lingers due to corruption, which is wide spread amongst politicians so I am sure it permeates all the way to the lower ranks of the police force as well. The lack of interest by companiues in hiring people with vast experience just because they have stepped beyond a certain age, attitute which is very different in the US.
You forget, Sir, that you went to the moon before others thanks to an immigrant (war criminal?), that you won over Japan due to several other immigrants, that you have the largest aircraft industry due to more immigrants, and on and on. US is very strict with criminals, unless they can help out. Should Hitler have invented the missiles instead of Von Braun, I am sure he would be living happily somewhere in Vermont by now.
The lack of foresight by the Brazilian government is a problem, I admit. I have worked as a consultant for inumerous companies in tne US and have saved billions of Dollars for them over the years. When in a conversation with Lula, before he became the President of Brazil, I mentioned that I would like to return to Brazil and help the government save money and simplyfy the humongous bureaucracy that overpowers it's administration, his reaction was "what! Are you crazy? Leave California and come to Brazil?" I don't know how would he react after becoming the President, but I don't believe he would have changed that much.
The Brazilian flag is not more ridiculous than the US flag, but it is very distinguishable. Shall we say original?
What is with stripes and red, white and blue collors shared by half the world's countries? Creativity, my friend, criativity.
I don't know where you get your facts, but two thirds swamp? I could then surprise you with the information, certainly news to you, that the US is 60% desert.
By the way, should you return the land that you stole from Mexico in the 19th century, the US would be slightly larger than Europe. Talk about criminal actions.
Finaly, yes, I agree. The US is the most powerful Country in the world, for now. All empires had their times of dominance: Romans, English, French, Egyptians, and so on. They all fell and others became the new empires. From the looks of it, you are next.
The only very fortunate thing is that you Sir is an exception to the rule. You are not a typical American, kind, gentle, happy and trustworthy people.

I don't know how would he react after becoming the President, but I don't believe he would have changed that much.

Are you not aware that he did become the President and your prediction came true?smilies/wink.gif

the citizens of the united states of america and its congress decide who it allows into the usa!! NOT FOREIGN NATIONALS WITH NO RESPECT FOR THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA !!!.. If brazil is such a great place for brazilian nationals why are nearly 500 thousand of them roaming around the usa illegally as immigration law fugitives eluding arrest and deportation ...GO HOME !!! AND SHUT UP!!! YOU HAVE NO RIGHT TO BE IN THE USA.. The chances of americans allowing any kind of an amnesty for illegal aliens in the usa has a snowballs chance in hell ...it just is not going to happen !!!!...the overwhelming majority of americans want them OUT !!!...

After a recent visit to Sp, never to be repeated I add. Brasil is let by corruption from government to its people. Brazil is a ticking time bomb that is waiting to explode at a guess approx 8 years time. The country suffers "social aparteid" and the people of the country are so passive its like they dont care. Brazil is a complex country due to its inhabitants most of which are European Immigrants, they care of nothing for the future as long as today they were happy. The Amazon has been protected by the original inhabitants who know how to look after the Amazon but Brazilians if you want to wreck your country you are doing a very good job with your concrete jungles but your stupidity has had a profound inpact on the rest of the world with global warming. You celebrate the fact you have the Olympics god only knows why a little internal infastructure trains schools etc in the middle of the country is far more pressing. The econay which you think is good? At the moment due to its past Brasilians just shop like its the first time they have been able to like kids in a sweet shop. A government that unwisely spends or pockets the money. If only you people could se what is coming in Brasil history always repeats. I have never vistied a country in such a mess, due to Brasil being so young family life is being destroyed as you have no way of passing down through generations of family life. Divorce is rife and it would seem you conduct your lives on telenovas. Oh if anyone could tell me the point of holding the Olympics in Brasil I am willing to listen, anyone who is educated out there must sit and realise this is going to be an absolute embaresment to you. Of all the BRIC countrys I know one thing Brasil will fail in the end mainly due to the mentality of the people of Brasil, Russia China India have one big difference to you they have discipline and you need to learn that. A totally false 8th richest economy, the bust is coming along with crime you have never known, forget your 15 Reals in your pocket to get rid or get shop, kidnappings ATMS will be increasing 10 fold. Boy the one thing I appreciated most on my UK return was my freedom to walk, not live in a high rise building drive my car, and for that I thank the British police and for the people of England who help them keep our country free to walk around. Brazilians are at present looking at history living in Victorian times with their maids etc, a woman should look after their husbands children and homes stop partying so much and teach your future generation skills.

Based on your command of the English written language, you must be a recent immigrant to the UK, if it is true that you are there. The least you can do is to learn the language before you start speaking and/or writing, forcing people to try and translate what you wrote to a comprehensive form.
I am a legal Brazilian immigrant from São Paulo (that is how it is spelled) and I would neve live in São Paulo again, the city with a immense and continuous traffic jam. Nonetheless, that city alone can swalow England's economy in one second.
I have worked with and met many Englishmen/women in my time and the one thing I cannot deal with is their arrogance and belief that they are above everyone else. Someone else thought so as well, invaded Europe trying to impose the "arian race" on the other European countries, beat the crap out of England with their missiles and then was taken out.
The English were living underground to avoid being blown to bits and then, when the Americans, and many other nations came to save them, BRAZILIANS INCLUDED IN "THE OTHER NATIONS" but now ignored when WW II allied forces are mentioned, the English rose "bravely" to be part of the victory over evil.
Give me a break. You live in a backaward country that worships an old woman who bleads your funds so she can live in palaces along with her family and her favorites.
Get a life and believe me. A big sigh of relief was taken in Brazil when you said you will never repeat your trip there.

You don't seem to get it. I am here in the US to stay. After 40+ years here, more than half my life, I am now more American than you. I respect the USA as a country that has given me a comfortable life, a family that I love and the many joys that I have had in life, even if some, a few, of it's citizens are stupid like you.
If some Brazilians are here illegaly, which is not my case, its their choice and, they will have to face the consequences of such choices when the time comes.
I am not in the US due to chance, such as you. You were born here to parents that, hopefuly, were better people than you, perhaps even immigrants, who knows. I chose to be here. One thing is certain: Unless you are a Native American, something I doubt as you do not show the nobility of an American Indian, someone in your family's past came here looking for a better life, eventually causing the birth of a piece of garbage such as yourself.
I spoke English before I arrived, as I respect the people of the countries I visit or live in. When I lived in Mexico and Spain I learned Spanish. It os a simple sign of respect and demonstration of desire to be part of the culture (do you know the meaning of the word "culture"?).
When you are totally broke (perhaps you are now) or even starving perhaps then you will decide to look South for a handout. To avoid bad surprises you should be kinder to other human beans, and maybe you can receive some assistance when needed.
I don't think the US Constitution states that "All American men are created equal..." As far as I know the Constitution kept the nationality out of the text. Perhaps you should ask the US Congress to make a new ammendment to that phrase.
You know what else? You may respond to this with more of your vitriolic (poisonous, for your information) rant. I will not lower myself to your level with additional responses.

Wow, the racism stuff really hijacked this thread. I'm a US citizen (and then some) who is fascinated by Brazil and although I don't approve of illegal immigration I do not attack the country/people as a whole. At any rate, based upon some of the comments, is Brazil a "closed" system; like Mexico, or are there opportunities for Americans to go there and set up a business?

Sir,
Contrary to the views of some partially intelligence handicaped people here, I am not an illegal immigrant nor do I sponsor such behavior.
I was born Brazilian but now consider myself to be more of an American, as I have been in the US for more than half my life and I am totally adapted to the American way of life, the rectitude of the people and the discipline by which the real Americans conduct their lives.
Brazil has one of the most welcoming people in the world and you will find yourself surrounded by people who are genuinely interested in you and your views, and who will be delighted to hear that you enjoy the country.
Bureaucracy unfortunately makes it difficult to start businesses there, not due to bias towards any nationality, but simply due to administrative faults started long ago and not yet adapted to the global speeds of today. The difficulty is represented by the lengthy process, but you will eventually succeed. I do recommend assistance by a good local business attorney.
Respect breeds respect and I agree that the Bush era has left a few open wounds, with Brazilians feeling diminished by that government, thus reacting somewhat negatively towards the US. Nonetheless, a new administration took over and efforts are being made, bylateraly, to ammend that. Lula, more than a propper politician as was his predecessor, was a populist nationalist, even if he didn't really know what that was, and decided, as a man of the people, to do certain things just to rattle the US and look heroic to the people. Very similar to a drunken at a bar playing for the crowd. There is no way on earth Brazilians would ever embrace a comunist system.
You will find that Brazil is a solid ground to establish and grow your business.
Brazilians love visiting the US as you can confirm by the increase in visitor visas issued and by the billions of US Dollars left in the US by those visitors. People will not come to places and be side by side with people they dislike.
You sir are a gentleman and an American who deserves to be called such, unlike some vulgar and hatefull people in ths thread.
perhaps illegal is lost in translation with bastardized portuguese..

brazilian visitors to the us of which more than 2 thirds of them overstay their tourist visas and are in violation of us laws on illegal presence and fugitives as illegal aliens in the usa ....americans are fed up with countries like brazil, equador ,peru, mexico, colombia ,argentina, and cuba who have no respect for us laws or americans by sneaking into our country like thiefs with the assistance of international traffickers/smugglers sending them thru aruba,st martin, the bahamas, mexico, canada,to the usa to commit crimes of illegal income tax evasion, financial frauds, and counterfeiting of documents....Go Home Brasileiros illegal !!!!.. brazil is a high violater of the priveledge to get a us tourist visa and then abuses that privledge by violating the terms of stay ...perhaps the usa needs to along with britain and france to stop them from even getting a tourist visa in the first place ..A moratorium on brazilians getting a tourist visa to the usa will send the right message NAO MAS BRASILEIROS !!!..

I don't even know where to begin after reading all these comments. I am a brazilian born american citizen who was part of the 1% of the population that served their country. I served in the US army for 6 years of my life and these hateful comments make me feel like I am a second class citizen, the comments upset me, they anger me, makes me want to think everyone here in the US is just like certain haters here. Obviously that is not the truth, but it hurts all the same... One of the reasons why I will never be fully adapted to this society is because of the lack of acceptance by certain americans, I enjoy living here and would never go back to Brasil. I am also married to a brazilian woman but that is to be expected being that I am the immigrant. I am tired, however, of all these racist/stupid comments from people who are uninformed and who should instead be angry at their own government who has become incredibly corrupt and is taking this country down. I will be the first to say that I will not let this country go down without a fight, I love living here, the way of life, the RESPECT that most people have for one another is one of the main reasons people immigrate to this country in the first place. I was a kid when I arrived here and always had a sense of duty and I have accomplished it by serving and continuing to live/work/study/pay taxes etc. etc. etc... To think that illegals don't pay taxes is incredibly stupid, to think things are always going to be covered up extremely well by the corrupt elite of this country is stupid. I am watching and so are many other concerned citizens, as for immigration it's extremely easy... GET THE TROOPS BACK HOME AND PUT THE ON THE BORDERS!!!!! STOP WASTING MONEY ABROAD ON CONFLICTS THAT WILL NEVER BE RESOLVED!!!!! give a pathway to legalization for the ones who are here... they will have to pay fines, back taxes if not already paid, that will bring in money to help with many expenses. The ones who want to leave will be the real burden since we would have to pay for them to go back. Govt propaganda along with people's propaganda help in INCITING FEAR so that people can go back via their own means but I am sure many will stay. One more fact, I worked at a basic training duty station and there are MANY MANY MANY brazilians, colombians, mexicans, venezuleans and many other people from other latin american coutries that came to serve this country proudly. I am only talking about the US Army, I know nothing about the other branches. I had many good friends while in the army and still in that organization which isn't known of having the best and brightest (although it is not true, we have many intelligent young men, and women there) I was ridiculed for being an immigrant and even called a few names, it's always the same... a group of people will do it.. not just one guy.. Thankfully I got it out of my system by talking to friends and reminding myself that the world is full of these idiots but there just as many if not more gentle, kind, intelligent people who condone such actions.

I was so angry when I read these comments that I am pretty sure my thoughts are all mixed up, but I hope you readers do not quickly judge people you haven't met because of their background/ethnicity. I know there will always be prejudice, and we all have it in some shape or form, being of course minute compared to people here.

Thanks for reading my rants,
Andre.

Let me ask the racist son of a bitch one thing.. what have you done for your country?? What have you done for the US besides pay the taxes you are obligated to pay? If you are such a patriot citizen why don't you go risk your life in the war to serve your country?
I was born and raised in Brazil. I am a dual citizen now and I am sure I have done more for this country than most US born citizens. So I EARNED the right to be an American citizen due to my commitment to the country. It wasnt GIVEN to me because I was born here.
I was never an illegal alien and neither I approve it. I do believe that the law must be followed, but who am I to judge someone that due to its conditions in his country decided to go out and seek a better way of life? Or maybe to be able to provide for his family?
"us" you definitely have no right to judge anyone. Have you ever visited Brazil? No.. therefore you have no right to talk about it. What do you base your comments on? News?
Maybe you are so butthurt because your old lady cheated on you with someone from Brazil. Or maybe a Brazilian national was more competent than you and took your job.. or maybe it is just out of jealousy.. maybe you just wish you had the balls to get off the couch and go after what you want..
Whatever the reason is you just just shut your hill billy mouth and think about what you say because if you were racist like that in front of me, in person, i would whoop the sht out of you in a heartbeat..

USA, crumbled former nice-guy empire of the world...
written by latinopimp, January 29, 2012

Let`s face it: american men are fat and impotent (biggest world viagra market) , already broke and soon to be blind , nice guys.

Americans have a problem with they manhood. Seems they can`t be men without steroids and even when using em manage to get their asses kicked (Chaels vs A. SIlva)
Hell, not just on MMA, it seems americans love to get their asses kicked everywhere. Most recently in that piece of third world jungle. Yup, since GETTING THEIR ASS KICKED IN VIETNAM they came with their tails under their legs.
You see this culture`s war manhood was all about technology; but when the kongs kicked their boy hides, they returned home crying as DEFEATED PUNKS and guess what? That s**t loss had an effect on the american women. American women like U.S observer`s mother started verbally dominating their husbands (and laying latinos). What your pissed underlaid bitches created ? Feminism.
So what you got now is a breed of american men that is submissive, stupid, bitchy, xenophobic and broke and motive of jokes in other countries.
Men like observer, with plenty of time to post on forums like this cuz they can`t get laid.
American men have had no manhood for a long time, they don`t know how to talk to women and even to pay PUA`s to teach them how to behave like men.
American men are a f**king joke everywhere in the world.
Militarlly? Well, what use it to have many nukes, when again, f**kers are afraid of using em. Hell, even India has nukes. American bambies are disassembling the ones they paid billions to build. The whole world is attaching the result of that s**t, as the bambi yankees are being taken by the chinese, which will be the future world power in 2050.
U.S observer will be among the first waves of expats when his box-office s**t job flunks to come teach english in Mao Zedong`s land. Good former empire management bitch, keep paying your taxes to feed the brazilians and indians in your soon to be gone land punk.
English Man in Santos
written by Legal Alien , June 26, 2012
Great article, I would like to say to any English persons reading this thinking about a "new life" abroad you should consider life in Brasil.
If you want to open ANY business here, they will welcome you. If you have any qualifications, they will welcome you, If you have nothing you can get a job teaching. They will welcome you.If you want to do nothing but surf. They will welcome that too smilies/smiley.gif
Brazil is probably the only country, in my eyes that still has a genuine respect for the British. Whatever you touch will turn to gold, you will live like a king and will not only take in some of the most beautiful sights of you life, you will have the time and sunshine to enjoy it to fullest.
Of course Brazil is huge so I'm mainly referring to the South East. I am lucky enough to live in the "Bournmouth" of Brasil, Santos (the coast of Sao Paulo. Its where all the best footballers come from and has a 10 to 1 ratio of WOMEN over men!smilies/smiley.gif. I have also visited 6 states, one time driving to south Bahia, what an adventure.....
I love Brazil and highly recommend folk wanting to take a stab in starting a small business to come to Santos. Its a "small island" (mais ou menas)full of "pleasant" "wealthy" people who love to spend. Get here quick though because at the rate the buildings are going up there wont be nothing available in 10 years.
I cant express what opportunities lie here for English Entrepreneurial minded people. Sell your house, spend half on an apartment here and half on a small managed start-up business/Franchise. You wont look back. More and more people are speaking English and the a great quality of life can be lived here whether your a beach, city or country lover.
Its not a risk if you know what your doing smilies/wink.gif
