In Brazil Today Worse than the Illegality is the Immorality PDF Print E-mail
2011 - October 2011
Written by Cristovam Buarque
Thursday, 06 October 2011 02:07

João Goulart Exactly fifty years ago last month then-President Jânio Quadros resigned, throwing Brazil into one of the most profound institutional crises in our history. Vice-President João Goulart was in China on an official visit in the epoch when international travel was difficult and slow.

At that time the President of the Republic was elected separately from the Vice-President, and João Goulart belonged to another political party with proposals completely different from those of Jânio's party and program.

The instability caused the military leaders to break with the constitution. Refusing to accept the ultimatum to go into exile, João Goulart decided to return and confront all the risks.

It was then that one of the loveliest pages in the history of Brazilian civic mobilization occurred: the Campanha da Legalidade, the legality campaign led by Leonel Brizola. This was undertaken through a precarious radio network, called the Rede da Legalidade, to mobilize the country.

The Grito da Legalidade, the shout for legality, won. João Goulart assumed the presidency, although he submitted to the adoption of Parliamentarianism, which substantially reduced his presidential powers.

But the Campanha da Legalidade was interrupted. It not only aimed to seat the constitutionally elected politician, but also to carry out, under the constitution, the reforms for which the country had yearned for centuries.

The ethical and technical reform of the governmental machine to eliminate the corruption and make the state efficient. The agrarian reform that was necessary: economically, to permit the use of land productively; and socially, to overcome the misery in which the majority of the rural population lived.

The banking reform, seeking to place the financial system in the service of the productive economy and of the population, removing it from the speculation to which it was dedicated.

The reform that would lead to the eradication of illiteracy. The reform of elementary/secondary education permitting the placement of all Brazilian children into quality schools. And the reform of higher education, which was imprisoned by bachelor degree holders isolated from the productive sector and with no innovative capacity.

A reform that would instigate the creation of an efficient public healthcare system and the elimination of the waiting lines, bringing the same quality treatment to all.

The reform that would bring about Brazil's transformation into an industrialized country.

Since then, some of these issues have lost their timeliness from the political point of view. But the Legalidade was not completed. It neither abolished the corruption nor created the political reform that we need. The number of illiterate Brazilians is greater today than it was fifty years ago.

Worse than the illegality is the immorality: A person lives or dies depending upon his or her access to healthcare services; a Brazilian develops his or her intellectual potential in accord with that individual's access to the educational services.

Agriculture replaced the unproductive plantations through the efficiency of agribusiness, but the economy is still based upon commodity exports.

Our quality healthcare and education continue today, fifty years later, with access limited to the few able to pay. Education is restricted to the mere 40% who complete their secondary education and, of these, fewer than half receive an education that satisfies the demands of today's world. University education, although substantially increasing the number of students enrolled, has been incapable of meeting the demands of the present world.

Partly as a consequence of this educational backwardness, our industry, despite its very positive advance in these fifty years, has neither achieved the leap forward demanded by the 21st century, nor left behind traditional products in favor of the goods and services of advanced scientific and technological innovation.

The Legalidade struggle must continue so we can construct the Brazil that we desire. A country without corruption or misery, one with an efficient state and decent politics; with the same education assured to any Brazilian child, independently of his or her family income; with the guarantee that all Brazilians will have the same quality healthcare services; with an economy capable of innovation and adaption to these new times in which knowledge is the capital.

Today the Campanha da Legalidade is conducted through the social networks, with demonstrations against the politicians' corrupt behavior and the corruption in the priorities of the policies that divert resources from projects meant for the people and for the country to projects that instead benefit the already-privileged minority.

The Legalidade remained incomplete and is, therefore, still necessary. This is the reason motivating young people to take to the streets in protest fifty years after it was initiated in Rio Grande do Sul by Leonel Brizola.

I was enchanted to read this great article. Senator Cristovam, takes us back to 1961, narrating part of the recent history of Brasil. It is interesting that he doesn't mention the consequences of Jânio´s resignation which of course was forced upon by him by "hidden forces".

First of all it is good to hear from you again. Hope you rested well after your busy schedule in the good ole U.S. of A.

Second of all, you have asked some good questions. I was not old enough at that time to remember what exactly happened. Besides, the explosive states were RJ,SP, MG & RGS, where the "things started" and as you know, I am not from any of those states. That is the reason I asked Ricardo if he was still in Brasil in 1961 as he is from SP and has many relatives in MG.However, many of my much older friends and relatives (some of them are no longer alive) have told me that they felt "good riddance" when the Military ousted Jango (I am not sure if you know Brizola was his "Cunhado"). Mind you, many Brasilians served in the armed forces as part of the "obligatory military" service (similar to your "draft") and highly disciplined and wanted to see the country to leap forward. In fact an older relative of mine went to Suez canal on the U.S. peace keeping mission.

I must tell you that the public schools were not bad at that time, as Ricardo would vouch for it. Unfortunately, the "caudilhos" didn't pay much attention to the higher education (Purposely, I think). Starting from 1964, the things changed and many Federal Universities were started and many foreign professors were invited to "visit" and thousands of Brasilians went overseas to get their Masters and Doctoral degrees to come back and teach. But...but...but....(sorry, I got this bad habit from ch.c), over the years the Military Government did neglect the primary and high school education and instead concentrated on strengthen the "trade Schools".

As for your question whether the military took over to prevent Brasil´s "close ties" with Fidel and Soviet Union: I don't think so. I don't think your ex-Presidents (or the current ones) knew where Brasil was located nor what it wanted to. While JFK and LBJ were sending all of you to Vietnam to fight the "communist menace", our brave politicians were busy cosying up with PRC to sell our "commodities" with the "European Powers" inter-mediating the "deals".

Lamentably, your great President Dick Nixon opened up the "trade" with PRC in 1974, rendering many Americans jobless over three decades. More lamentably, our current leaders are following suit. We never learn from history.smilies/cheesy.gifsmilies/grin.gifsmilies/angry.gif

Thanks for asking my opinion and hope you would vote up my comment by clicking on the green plus sign.smilies/wink.gif

Ricardo: Joao, yes. I was living in Brazil in 1961.

Regarding Janio Quadros resignation in 1961, my stepfather mentioned many times to me over the years the inside story of what really happened in August 1961.

First, let me give you a little background story to set up the stage.

My stepfather's father (let's call him HB) had been a long time very close personal friend of Janio Quadros. And there were 2 people who had a very close friendship with Janio Quadros for many years, besides HB, Janio also had a third friend which I don't remember his name, and I can't ask my stepfather because he passed away about 10 years ago. My stepfather always referred to them as the 3 musketeers, because they used to hang out together, and the two friends used to be around to give support at most political rallies when Janio Quadros were running for governor of Sao Paulo, and also when he was running for president of Brazil.

By the way, my stepfather's father was a doctor (M.D.) and when Janio got elected president of Brazil he asked HB to be part of his cabinet as Minister of Health, but he refused the offer because he enjoyed his practice just as a medical doctor, and he was not really interested in politics.

Joao, you must know in detail the history of Brazil, and what happened to Janio Quadros and his administration during the short period that he was president of Brazil.

Anyway, Janio Quadros had no intention of resigning as president of Brazil on August 25, 1961.

He left Brasilia by airplane to go to Sao Paulo (it was Rio or Sao Paulo), Joao you can check the news of that time to confirm where he landed.

He was supposed to meet senior members of the Brazilian armed forces to back him up: Janio was going to announce a coup d'etat with him as the dictator.

But before Janio Quadros left Brasilia, he called Ranieri Mazzilli to his office and handed him a letter with instructions that the letter should be opened only in case of emergency or if something went drastic wrong with the trip that Janio was making to Sao Paulo.

By the end of the day Janio Quadros expected to be the new dictator of Brazil with the support of the Brazilian armed forces.

But as soon Janio Quadros airplane left Brasilia, Ranieri Mazzilli, who was the president of the Chamber of Deputies of Brazil at that time, decided to open the letter to check its content. It was a letter of resignation of Janio Quadros as president of Brazil.

That letter was supposed to be made public only if something went wrong with the coup d'etat, and not before Janio Quadros had put his plan into action.

Ranieri Mazzilli was suspicious that something was going on, and as soon was he found out the content of the letter he went public with the information, and by the time Janio Quadros' airplane landed in Sao Paulo, his resignation already had been announced in Brasilia, and Janio had no chance to even try the coup d'etat.

Since Mazzilli was the president of the Chamber of Deputies of Brazil at that time then he assumed the Presidency for two weeks in August 1961 after the resignation of Janio Quadros, because the vice-president Joao Goulart was on an official visit in China.

Most Brazilians don't know the inside story of what really happened on August 25, 1961, and how Ranieri Mazzilli changed Brazilian history went his gut feeling and speedy actions prevented Janio Quadros from becoming a dictator of Brazil on that day.

I don't know how well I recall the details from memory, but I believe that when Janio Quadros' airplane landed in Sao Paulo, and to Janio Quadros' surprise the Brazilian army had already requested that his airplane go to some military base for them to sort out what was going on.

Joao, I hope you just learned something new that you were not aware of; a special episode and turn point in Brazilian history that very few people knows the actual inside story.

All very interesting . . .

An interesting and honest revelation and evaluation by the good senator. It really seems to me from everything I read in Brazil, and from the conversations I have with Brazilians that everyone understands the real problem that Brazil has. A lack of educational opportunity for all the children and young people of Brazil. Even the healthcare issues have their root in lack of education.

I visited an private elementary school and a federal university this week, and I was extremely impressed with the will of the students to learn, to become part of Brazil's future, to reach their dreams, and to be proud of their country. These experiences to me are the highlights of my life. These interactions with young people are what drives me. And it saddens me even more when I see the children who are languishing in the streets because their teachers have been on strike for 2 months. Because the governor of Ceará doesn't think they deserve the legally established minimum wage for teachers.

Brazil is building tech schools and universities to train people for jobs in Brazil's economic boom, but the majority of kids in the public schools will be left out because they aren't prepared to pass the entrance exams to any of the post secondary schools. I know a very smart girl, 22 years of age, who has taken the vestibular twice, and the ENEM twice, but cannot pass due to the poor education she received in the public schools. Yet her family pays taxes to support the very system that denies her an education.

Until these things are addressed and changes are made, Brazil will never emerge from her current status as a developing country. Look at the rest of the BRIC nations, and you'll see they understand the value of educating ALL of their children.

I admire Senator Barque for his viewpoints, and his insight, but I wonder why I never see this issue being addressed ny the federal government. There is more money being spent in Brazil right now to build stadiums and infrastructure for tourists who won't be coming due to the monetary crisis going on in the world than is being spent to educate the children who only want to build a better Brazil for the future.

I think it's the greatest shame of Brazil. These kids love their country, but their country abandons them.

It should read as follows:

Most Brazilians don't know the inside story of what really happened on August 25, 1961, and how Ranieri Mazzilli changed the direction of Brazilian history when he used his gut feeling followed by a speedy action and he was able to prevent that Janio Quadros to become the new dictator of Brazil on that day.

Ricardo: Joao, yes. I was living in Brazil in 1961.

Thanks for the confirmation and the subsequent narration of the history of Jânio. Most of it I knew, especially about the role Ranieri Mazilli. He as the interim President twice. For 14 days after Janio´s resignation and 13 days after the fall of Jango. Many old times dont consider him as a hero, but a small time lawyer ("advogado de porta de cadeia") who was born with his "ass turned to the moon" and became the President twice. In spite of his being responsible for eventually installing a military regime, it is ironic to note that he didn't get any important "cargos" in the government. Unlike the recent democratically elected civilian governments which have been giving Ministerial posts as consolation prizes for the politicians who were booted out in the ballots!

I wonder what Sen.Cristovam thinks about Ex-Deputado Mazzilli?

But one thing you are absolutely right, though. Janio did want to install himself as a dictator. smilies/wink.gifsmilies/cheesy.gif (ask any old time well read "Paulistano)

This is the first time you have mentioned about it in this blog, Rickey. I am not sure if HB are the initials of your step grandfather´s real name or not. I will find it out and even if I do decode his real name, I will not reveal his name in this blog.smilies/cheesy.gif

But..but..but.. the other two musketeers were Gastone Righi and José Aparecido.smilies/cheesy.gif

It was a wonderful narration of the history and thanks once again. I am sure ASP is pleased to read it too.

These were nice people and they just happen to be long time persoanl friends of Janio Quadros, and they did not want any special favors from Janio when he became president.

You must be aware that Janio used to drink more than he should, and he really hit the bottle in the months before his resignation. Janio was very frustrated with everything that transpired during his administration, that's why he decided to go for a coup d'etat.

Janio made the mistake of trusting Ranieri Mazilli with that letter of resignation that was supposed to be open only if something had gone wrong with Janio's planned coup d'etat.

By the way, my father was a Janio Quadros supporter, and I remember his campaign for president, because he used a vasoura as his symbol.

its interesting here that it is dificult to pinpoint exactly what tipped the military into a coup

and i think it is because it is getting lost in history. you see a bunch of documentaries about what happened back then down here, but they go into absolutly no detail about why the military staged a coup.

ive only seen one in depth interveiw of a person from the military side, and, the guy actualy made sence on a lot of issues and was firm about the fact that no torture went down on his athority.im surprised there just arnt more interveiws from people from the military who carried out the coup.if only to get some kind of insight into why did they do what they did....

very interesting this nebulous subject

but on the subject of this military coup, where less than a thousand of the opisition was killed in what ? 15 years of military dictatorship, we have a huge amount of material screaming how really horrible and violently controling these military were in the coup, but, very little analysing what led up to this coup and why did they decide to do it
I agree with ASP

As someone fascinated by Brasilian politics and history but without the depth of knowledge of someone such as Ricardo, I'm enjoying this discussion. This is also one of the more interesting topics. Thanks, Ricky.
However, to further the discussion as it relates to education, might I suggest that the educational requirements of a commodities-exporting economy may very well be different than that of an economy determined to produce and export products.
In a practical sense, perhaps Brasil needs to look at the future and choose something of a national identity because if it chooses to continue to be a commodities exporter and a product importer, then why spend the money?
When I think of Brasil's current situation, I can't help but reflect on the middle-East, which seems to me to be full of PhD's with no future and no work unless you live in an oil-rich country or the Yanks, who seem to be floundering without a national purpose and direction and constantly screaming about the lack of jobs yet so happy to export jobs.
I don't know, just my opinion.

written by Simpleton, October 09, 2011
Eddie, the second to last sentence in your post seemed to have lost something in the translation. The "or the Yanks" in the middle of it didn't seem to connect with what came before it unless that was just a second thing you "can't help but reflect on" when considered in relation to what came after it. Sorry to be so much of a parser. You might also want to note that the author of the article is our esteemed educator and statesman Christovam, not Ricky. You're right about the educational requirements for one of Brasil's major exports being different, the buc_ta doesn't read, write or do arithmetic!

Ricardo: Joao, in 1964 I was just a young man and my major interest was to have a good time, and I was not interested in politics.

I had a great life in Brazil, and I have many fond memories of all the years that I lived in Brazil, before I moved to the United States.

We did not move out of Brazil because of politics.

My stepfather could not take the traffic in Sao Paulo anymore. The traffic was a mess. Then he decided to move out of Sao Paulo, to the interior of the state.

Right at that time my stepfather and my mother went in vacation to the United States, and they enjoyed their vacation so much that when they returned to Brazil they decided to move to the U.S. instead of the interior of the state of Sao Paulo.

I understand the traffic in Sao Paulo is worse today than when we moved to the United States.

Much worse. After you moved because of the traffic in São Paulo, our Japanese brethren introduced something called "Motorcycles" in the beginning of the 80's all over Brasil. The "Motoqueiros" became a pain in the butt and continue to be so. Even if your stepfather had moved to the interior of SP, he couldn't have avoided these ruffians. I don't know what the situation is in NJ & NY regarding the traffic, but...but...but.... right now, it is bad (to get worse) even in small boondocks towns in Brasil.

Ricardo, it isn't true.
written by Ederson, October 11, 2011
Ricky, no one gives their secret order of battle to a hired gun, especially one from Blackwater. That's ridiculous.

Secondly, the Yanks only made 9,0000 M1 battle tanks. Are we to believe that half of their production, minus those already junked, given away, and sold abroad are being kept hidden in depots throughout Iraq and Afghanistan? Tanks cannot survive alone; they require huge carriers, fuel trucks, and an ungodly amount of support personnel.

Thirdly, the article mentions they are accompanied by tens of thousands of other armored vehicles?

Fourth, tanks are dangerous vehicles in which to make a career. It has never been the policy of the West to use tanks as any part off a land grab. The West has always believed in confronting Eastern tank flotillas with airpower. Tanks are useful against as Arab despot or other idiot, but a gamble against an intelligent military. Recent experience validates that argument.

Fifth, the Yanks are not Russia's primary enemy and realistically never have been. I don't care what the pundits say.

The logistics of such a movement defy belief. Where are the facilities for the troops and material?

Russia's number one enemy is China and their Islamic allies. Don't let the propaganda mislead you. By the way, the Chinese threat to Russia is looming larger each day. but that is another story.smilies/wink.gif

And I'll still bet there is a Brasilian connection with the Yank's seven airbases in Columbia, but only time will tell.

Great comments, Eddie. Especially about the relationship between the Russians and the Chinese. In fact the Chinese had border skirmishes with the Soviets some years ago, didn't they? The article also says that the good our Chinese brethren have deployed their troops in Pakistani Kashmir. Your arguments are more convincing than the article posted by Rickey. So I decided to give your post a positive vote by clicking the green plus sign.

steve gadd is one of the top drummers, back then, it was him and harvey mason who were really bringing a jazz sensibility to pop and funk grooves. i mean, they actualy invented the drum machines because of them, because rock drummers were all over the place and just couldnt lock in with fire the way these guys could...and i cant forget elvin jones, tony williams and jack dejonnette, certainly great drummers who influenced gadd and mason.

i have to confess im not a big fan of clapton, but he is cool...marcus miiler is the stuff also

ill check out the vai youtube at some point

but , dont forget you countrymen :

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q2l_3YfI0zc&feature=channel_video_title

fabinho costa also performs with the great frevo band "spok frevo", and with the help of wynton marsalis, they are suposed to be passing through the states in a 50 city tour next year...but, you see, as well as knowing his culture, he has mastered bebop modern jazz as well as any american...the guy is fantastic

ric, the linc wont tell me anything of what really tipped the military over to do the coup...its like the lost truth, what really led up to and made them think they had to do a coup....

like i said, i read that one thing was that there was rebelion going on inside the military ranks and that is one thing that helped trigger them to do the coup...but , there must have been a series of things that made them do it....
lets try this linc again

Ricardo: the above link that you mentioned the jazz group is very good.

Here is what I posted on Facebook a few days ago on my cousin's wall:

I used to go to New York on a regular basis to listen to jazz. I used to hangout around the Greenwich Village at the “Blue Note” and other jazz clubs at “The Village”.

When your parents came to New York to visit us, one night we went to The Village to listen to jazz – If I remember correctly we saw James Moody sextet that evening and your parents loved the show.

*****

Being next door to New York City over the years I had the chance to see many of the greatest jazz players. We had many very good jazz clubs also here in New Jersey and these guys used to show up around here.

We also had many great jazz players who lived in our area here in New Jersey such as Count Basie, James Moody, Dizzy Gillespie, Bill Evans, Ron Carter, the Heath Brothers, Cedar Walton, Houston Person, and Milt Jackson to name just a few people.

And all these people and many more were always around for us to be able to listen to great jazz. Sonny Rollins the Sax player also was fantastic.

I had a great time watching the live performance of all these people on a regular basis.

Joao, as you well know, I have already, in any number of brilliant essays, highlighted the explosive situation between Iran and Saudi Arabia. I've explained in detail the permanent acrimony between the Shiites and Sunnis and even introduced the Sufi expansion into Nigeria. Indeed, I've expressed my feelings that this incredible rivalry will only be settled, temporarily, in the time-honored Islamic tradition of brother slaughtering brother. It's inevitable, and made only more humorous by the pathetic media presentations of Iran's leaders portraying themselves as innocent bystanders to the whole affair.smilies/cheesy.gif
Remember, I've warned our dear readers about the massive, but quiet arms escalation involving the two thugacracies and their pseudo wars in Yemen and elsewhere.
Thankfully, the French national desire to promote nuclear proliferation among the unstable Islamic states will only make the inevitable happen sooner. It's no secret that the Saudi and their fellow dictatorships are arming for the future.
It reminds me of the old adage concerning what happens when you blindfold any red-blooded German male, spin him around three times and then hit him over the head with a rock, rip off the blindfold, and hand him a rifle; he marches straight to France. The Shiite/Sunni struggle is little different and makes as much sense.

Simpleton, such an extraordinary individual. I've often felt, particularly during the filming of "The Most Interesting Man Alive" documentary that should I fall, he would serve as an excellent second. However, in typical fashion, I survived my brush with fame.
Anyway, back to Simpleton. I, too, have experienced a familiarity with Mason City, of sorts. There was a girl who lived there, tall, with an excellent voice, a rather slim, pretty face, and a number of other attractive features. Unfortunately, she wasn't Italian, but was, instead, descended from a fine line of Nebraska Sioux, Irish, and Welsh knighthood. She now runs a hospital in Wisconsin, of all places. I was interested, but as the love angel had already sunk one arrow into me, I was worried that a second, or my new wife, would kill me.smilies/wink.gif
There's little that can be done about the future. The Arab Spring, such a beguiling term, will have its way. In the meantime, ASP and Ricky's apparent interest in Jazz merits the donning of my headphones and another crumpet! Take care, Joao.smilies/cheesy.gif

Last time I was in Mason City was long long ago. Stayed in the bunk house apartments at a nice golf resort near there to go celebrate the 100th birthday of a relative in a nearby town. (Osage? Forest City? Clear Lake? Don't remember exactly, just trying to elicit a response out of Eddie on the area he'd been to / his wife will drag him back to visit in 2013.) A long sentence, Simp. I had difficulty in decoding your message and I bet Eddie with his poorer English is still struggling. Never mind. I am happy you did come down from your high pedestal to comment.

But...but...but... the reason I put forth my question to Eddie about this "Occupy" movement in your country is that it smells as fishy as our "Anti Corruption" marches. Of course, Eddie was quite diplomatic and "exited by tangent". As you know, the 12th or 13th "International Conference Against Corruption" is to be hosted in DF next year and we expect to generate lots of tourism during the event. I really don't know why the senior citizens in the U.S. are joining the "Occupy" movement. From what I read, they seemed to be pretty upset with the "corruption practices" prevailing in your homeland also.

Do you think that this "Occupy Wall Street" was invented by some Madison Av. "executives" (are they still active?) to stimulate "tourism" to NYC? If you think so, you should seriously consider bringing those old boys who are participating in the "Occupy" to DF in 2012.smilies/wink.gifsmilies/cheesy.gifsmilies/grin.gif

The United States is planning to attack Iran with Nuclear Weapons
http://www.elitetrader.com/vb/...enumber=53

October 14, 2011

SouthAmerica: They have been crying wolf for over 5 years that the United States and Israel are getting ready to attack Iran.

At first, we believed in the articles and discussions that were going on on various TV shows.

Then, when the new articles appeared, the discussions became about if Iran was going to be attacked by the United States and Israel then they would have had done by now.

When more new articles on this subject were published, then the discussion turned to why the United States and Israel don't have the capability to attack Iran even if they wanted to.

After that when further articles and commentaries on TV shows continued on this subject we just have had a good laugh.

At the end of the day, this subject over time it has managed to become just a joke:

The United States and Israel are getting ready to attack Iran....

Hah, hah, hah.....really? hah, hah, hah.....

The reaction of the rest of the world should be: have a good laugh about this story about the Mexican drug dealer.

Is this the best story the US government can come up with these days?

I understand Washington is getting desperate because the "Occupy Wall Street" movement is spreading like wildfire, but they can be more creative and come up with a better crisis than Iran hiring a Mexican drug dealer to work as a hit man.

Maybe Washington is so out of touch with reality today that this si the best crisis that they can come up with to take the attention away from the "Occupy Wall Street" revolution.

Queen's English
written by Simpleton, October 15, 2011
Let those beholding to the Queen of England be known by a proper noun such as English or Englishmen. The language itself does not belong to her. I remember the brouhaha I had with my college prep english teacher about proper vs common nouns. Occsionally I relent and call the most used language in Brasil "Portuguese" instead of "portuguese".

Comso, although I found another post of your's not worthy of responding to, some of the content of both that and the one above impress me. Spot on dude - I finally watched both versions of the biased "news" on cable last night to what is going on with the sit-ins. Like the Tea Party, things have devolved with respect to who and what and why but I have one question: Are they really going to go international with this with doing it in something like 71 countries today? Madison Wisconsin is supposedly the home of the "rich and aimless" - I read that on a tee shirt. Now OWS seems pretty much just like you say; leaderless, pointless, without any dicernable meaning or direction.

Eddie, yes the sentence itself and some of the concepts buried in it are deep and convoluted. I most certainly could not have been overtly pointed about some things therein and used the "asp-ish" language as I certainly would have offended some people. As to me, well, maybe just deep. I once had a college english scholar, a guy that was ghost writting for some famous writter one summer, a guy that I conversed with nearly every morning, tell me "you know ... you, you are a very deep individual". I don't really know, I guess I would just have to trust his judgement on the subject.

The United States has been waging financial and economic war against many countries around the world, and countries such as Brazil and China are waking up regarding the coming demise of the US dollar.

I wonder why the Brazilian government still is accumulating US dollars?

The Brazilian Central Bank is holding about US$ 350 billion US dollars as foreign currency reserves.

Why the Brazilian Central Bank is not getting out of the US dollar and replacing it with gold reserves?

Brazil should replace at least US$ 250 billion from US dollars asset into gold and silver.

Actually the "simple" answer is that the doctor attending to my birth in early October can be blamed for quite a few things which I won't go into detail about right now. Turns out his favorite team was playing in the world series and he kept craning his head around trying to glimpse at the TV across the way. Something happened at just the wrong time and he got excited, pulled too hard and proceeded to drop me right out onto the floor on my head! Anyway, glad to hear your dad was at least trying to fly your mom to the hospital. He certainly had the speed advantage to get there on time. Maybe they might have made it if he hadn't landed that Hawker Hunter in a tree. What a spectacular feat that must have been!smilies/grin.gifsmilies/cheesy.gif

No Joao, I'm not even close to 100 (nor likely to be as close to it as you are). Just like my grandfather who also fell just short of it before he passed, I'll likely remember (and accurately I might add!) many many details since I was about the age of 5. Better re-check your memories regarding that playground you grew up on in La Paz. Are you quite certain the Hawker Hunter model you played in wasn't a two seat trainer circa 1955? And who the heck has time for a hangover being I acclimated quite well to sleeping til noon or later with the gals?

Thank you so much WTF for the compliments. You get a positive vote from me. I wish you would change your ID from WTF to something more respectable like "Fernando Ignácio da Silva" (a.k.a. WTF).

I did read the link and it does stink. The poor Greeks were taken for a sucker ride and they are chagrined for justifiable reasons. They cannot put the blame on the Yanks, Brasilians, Bolivians & other South Americans.

Forget the bailouts...let free markets rule. It is horrible that moral hazard is now business as usual. Let the re-set process begin already!

Sure, the free markets should rule, but..but...but... under government appointed apolitical regulatory agencies. Unfortunately , its not the case. For eg; we have ANATEL which is very similar to your FCC (assuming that you are an Yank). It doesn't do much other than rubber stamping the "rules and regulations" written by our European "allies". The same thing goes for the Energy & other "strategic" industries.

I can go on ranting and raving about the European "allies" we have, but my question is: Are they really "allies"? smilies/angry.gif

written by Ederson, October 18, 2011
My mother once told me that "life is like a box of chocolates." And I think that's true, especially when you speak of hay. Unless you are rotating your field and growing a specific legume or grass, hay is likely to be a mixture of the good and the bad. A lot of weeds are found in such hay, particularly nettles and burrs, which for some odd reason horses often love.
I always faint when i see my horse bite into a mouthful of nettles when we're on the ride. Not only that, but when hay dries, the stems of a great many plants become sharp and can stick right through you, drawing blood sometimes. And sticky? Never did get used to hay dust under my shirt, but the horses and cattle love it, especially when it's cold and their hungry.

You must be a cityslicker, Wiseman. Isn't that what the Yanks call someone with a limited education? You must also have a lot of unfulfilled daydreams. What you are thinking of is called straw. It's soft to the touch, smooth, mostly dust free, nice to the skin. horses like to sleep on it, and your ancestors used to make their roofing out of it and cover their bare floors with the stuff. They would put a board across the doorway to keep the straw in. Ever heard of carrying your girl across the threshold? Do they have any pretty girls where you come from in the middle of that damp, dark city?
Get some sunshine Wiseman and find a farmer that will let you roll around in his straw, preferrably wheat or oat straw. good stuff. My horse likes it, too.smilies/wink.gif

Hi Simpleton. Yes, I am very familiar with alfalfa. I've chewed on a lot of alfalfa stems and planted it on hillsides with poor soils. It's popular in semi-arid areas, too. It's an airplane wrecker, however. Especially if you are in a light tailfragger. Land in alfalfa only if it has been recently cut.

Welcome back to this blog, sir, after such a long time. I am a fan of your books and my favorite is "The Road to Nagging". If ever I have the opportunity to meet you in person, I´d very much appreciate your autographing the complimentary copy you are requested to bestow upon a humble Brasilian peasant such as my excellent self. I suggest a leather bound copy is in order and I can carry it back to Brasil to show to all our fellow members of the Peasants Union. This union is a small one-perhaps has around 3 dozen members, but...but...but... expected to grow after reading your book. Never mind if it is in English. Long ago there was a fella named Wild Bill that had a muscle type biplane he used for aerial shows at that Albuquerque Hotair Balloon Fiesta (held every first full week in October). Not sure if he migrated to Indianola when the inflationary crowd did their thing there. Anyway, field elevation in Albuquerque is about 5K feet MSL and he would hang that thing on it's prop for what seemed like forever at about 5K AGL. Pre-Block-15 (or was it pre-Block-10?) F-16s were cool too. Before the avionics packages got too heavy they could accelerate going vertically!

Ricardo: Thanks for your support, and I appreciate that you enjoy reading my articles.

But this person who use as a screen name ellipsis [ … ], wrote the following “How many more times are you going to post this...you self important boob?”

Boob = A stupid or foolish person

This person hides behind a screen name and he/she don't have the guts to use their own name. It is obvious that this person objective is to put someone else down and nothing else, because he/she is expressing his or her frustration with their own pathetic lives.

That statement says more about his/her state of mind than what I am trying to accomplish by bringing that information up about that video.

I am sorry to see that ellipsis [ … ] is so unhappy with his accomplishments in life. Anyway, he/she missed the point of my posting regarding this particular video.

This poor person when he made such a claim he/she did not realized that most of my articles have been published by Brazzil Magazine, RGE Monitor, ArabNews, The Brasilians, and I have been quoted by a number of people over the years in various other newspapers and magazines; here in the United States, in Africa, in Asia, and also in the Middle East.

RGE Monitor became a very prestigious and influential global economics website in a short period of time. RGE Monitor has been named one of the world's best economics websites by Business Week, The Economist, Forbes and the Wall Street Journal.

ArabNews is one of the most influential newspapers on the Arab world.

Brazzil Magazine, and The Brasilians, are well known and successful Brazilian newspaper and magazine that are located in the United States.

My articles have been mentioned even in articles published by prestigious US universities such as The Woodrow Wilson School at Princeton University which is one of the top foreign policy and International Affairs study centers in the United States.

On page # 9 of “The Nonproliferation Review / Summer 2003” publication - which is published by Woodrow Wilson School at Princeton University - they refer to my article “We Need the Bomb” (May 2002)

The Nonproliferation Review / Summer 2003 - Woodrow Wilson School at Princeton University

Over the years my articles have been mentioned in various Wall Street Newsletters a number of times.

My articles about currency also have been discussed by economists in major newspaper in Nigeria, and in India.

My article “Brazzil Magazine – April 13, 2010 - The Brazilian Formula for Success: Dictatorship” got an immediate reaction from the Financial Times (UK) and also from Folha de Sao Paulo, and was the main headline on UOL website. That article also was mentioned on 3 Brazilian government websites 1) State Department, 2) Department of Justice, and Department of Planning and Development.

This article got the full attention of the Brazilian government, and by September of 2010 the Brazilian Army was in the streets of Rio de Janeiro doing what I suggested in that article.

Reply to Ederson – Part 2 of 2
written by Ricardo C. Amaral, October 19, 2011

Ricardo: Ederson, as you can see I don't need to pat myself on my own back as ellipsis [ … ] claimed, and his nasty remark did not even touch my ego.

My only response is I felt sorry for ellipsis [ … ], and at the end of the day he is the person who is very frustrated and is looking for attention.

When he made that remark he was talking about himself, and not about me.

By the way, I have been publishing all these articles over the years under my real name.

I don't need to hide behind some fake screen name, most people use a fake screen name because they are insecure, and they are embarrassed of expressing their opinions under their real name, and because they are not sure about what they believe and their own opinions.

On the Elite Trader Forum I use the screen name “SouthAmerica”, but everybody on that forum knows my real name, because over the years I have been mentioning my articles when I post on that forum.

***

Ederson, you also said: “To be truthful, our lives are anonymous on this blog. “

***

Ricardo: That's true for most of the members of the Brazzil blog, but not in my case since I have been posting all these years under my real name.

I am also aware that members of the US government such as CIA, and other US government agencies are monitoring everything that we discuss on this blog, and some of these people are even posting comments under some fake screen name here on this blog.

I would not be surprised to find out that “US observer” works for the US government, and his job is to make crazy comments to turn off some people who come to Brazzil magazine to read the articles and to participate of the discussions. His job and his goal is to make the blog look like there's a bunch of semi-literate people exchange ignorant points of view and misinformation, as he does it on a regular basis.

These days they are monitoring everything that is happening on the web on these major blogs, and in social networking sites such as Facebook, and forums such as the Elite Trader Forum, and so on. ...

You can bet that the Brazilian government is also monitoring what is being discussed on this web site.

***

Ederson you also said: “Don't give up, Ricardo. I enjoy your writing and look forward to your upcoming essay on the Islamic/Christian fighting in Nigeria and Brasil's involvement on behalf of China.”

***

Ricardo: I had no plans of giving up. I am just starting mainly now that the US mainstream media has become completely irrelevant for all practical purposes – and less and less people pay any attention to the US mainstream media since they don't cover relevant subjects, and materials with substance – the US mainstream media turned the news into just entertainment and nothing else – no wonder the US mainstream media is in trouble and they are losing their audience by the millions.

If you have been reading my articles over the years, then you know that I wrote about many subjects years before the mainstream media realized what was happening and started talking about it. My articles where away ahead of its time.

That's how you build credibility over time, and people start paying attention to your articles, and to what you have to say.

There's another Brazilian journalist who is excellent regarding his analysis and he is earning credibility because of his superior analytical skills, and his name is Pepe Escobar – he writes for Asian Times, and he is interviewed on Russia Today on a regular basis.

By the way, I just listed a few items to show to you that people have been quoting from my articles for many years, but that was not what caught my attention when people brought to my attention that Porter Stansberry had quoted me on his newsletter and video presentation.

What caught my attention was the fact that Porter Stansberry had quoted me with some of the top gurus in Wall Street such as Bill Gross, Jim Rogers, and that was a new experience for me.

I don't pay attention to the opinions of many people, but these two fellows, Bill Gross, and Jim Rogers are among the small number of people who I pay attention to what they have to say, and I respect the opinions of these guys.

Anyway, Porter Stansberry quoted Bill Gross, Jim Rogers, and myself about what we have been saying about the US dollar - and now we can add another renown economist, Michael Hudson, to that very special list.

Congress: Legislating to fear? - July 16, 2010
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x07CAXJ0rQI

Cyber warfare is the next frontier for the United States government to protect national security. The government fears war will be waged to sabotage the electrical grid or even weapons systems. However, programs like the "perfect citizen" are being launched to track cyber threats that could be used to spy.

Today Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi has become a Martyr and a new symbol for the Arab world – that's what happens to you if you go against the Western powers recolonization of African countries.

No Ricardo, Late Col.Moammar never considered himself as an Arab, but a "North African". As for his becoming a "new symbol" for the "Arab World", I doubt it. The memory of most of the people all over the world is very short and they don't bother to read history. He should have taken up the offer of the South African or Venezuelan Presidents and gone into exile in one of those countries. But the stubborn old fool wanted to die in his own country, like Saddam. He wasn't a match against more valiant Brits,French or Italians whose "Army of Unemployed" now can go to Libya to do the "Rebuilding" of that country. I wonder how the 4 remaining RAFALE fighters perform in the "War against Gaddafi"?

I am glad we kept out of that mess in Libya. If our government wants to send our folks as part of U.N. "Peace Keeping" mission, I intend sending e-mail messages to all our Senators and Deputados protesting against it.

Ricardo: Joao, what happened to Colonel Qaddafi is another example of what would happen to Kim Jong Il if he gives up his stockpile of Nukes.

Iran also must be paying attention regarding what happened to Saddam Hussein, and now to Colonel Qaddafi – the moral of the story is: If your country is not armed with nuclear weapons then your country is vulnerable to military attack, destruction and pillage of all your assets.

Ricardo: Norlina, countries such as the United States, Brazil and even China are monitoring the discussions on these blogs in an effort to try to identify people who might be a threat to their countries – any form of threat.

They are not watching these blogs and the social networking sites such as Facebook, to answer questions that people have about the social and economic policies of their countries.

The people who are monitoring these web sites are not diplomats, they are part of these governments surveillance systems. Check these web sites and you will understand what is really going on as follows:

Sorry, but I had no intention of posting this information more than one time.

We humble peasants thoughly expect you to never never never repost any of the same material and web links ever again under any future article - you may still do that on your own damned blog site if you so choose, just not here. If you do not stop doing that, you will be found 100000000% guilty of all charges, condemnations, belittling and fault finding of your mental capacities and inteligence as accused above by other readers.

Ricardo: Let me see Brazzil magazine published more than 50 articles that I wrote over the years.

I also made comments on hundreds of articles written by other people – then we are talking about a few thousand pages for me to review to make you happy.

I believe that it is easier for you to stop reading Brazzil magazine and go to another web site that people post only stuff that make you happy.

By the way, what has been your contributions to Brazzil magazine over the years other than give your short opinions – half of the time about things that nobody cares about?

If I stop writing and posting stuff on Brazzil magazine it will make a difference to this magazine, but if you stop coming and posting your stuff on Brazzil magazine most people are not even going to notice that you have been gone.

Regarding massive corruption, the International Mafia and....
written by Ricardo C. Amaral, October 23, 2011

Ricardo: "Goldman Sachs the Pillage People" has been enjoying the US$ 2 billion dollars that they already had stolen from Libya and the Libyan people.

Now that we had the total collapse of the Libyan government “Pillaging in Libya” might turn out to be a very good source of income to "Goldman Sachs the Pillage People" and their network of thieves.

It seems to me based on this video that the Italian people have grasped what is going on regarding the "Goldman Sachs the Pillage People" and their network of thieves.

October 20, 2011 - ITALY. Riots in Milan.
Students Protest Turns Violent. Assaulted Goldman Sachs Office

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sXfvNhTUI2o

I wonder how long it will take for Brazilians also to get smart and grasp what is happening in Brazil.

‎We need to keep in mind that "Goldman Sachs the Pillage People" and their network of thieves recently sent about 300 more of their scoundrels to Brazil to help set up their scams and all kinds of traps to the fools who still doing business with these thieves.

I can't even imagine the creative garbage that "Goldman Sachs the Pillage People" and their network of thieves must be setting up in Brazil to screw the Brazilian government and the Brazilian people in a big way - as they usually do with everything they touch.

A Reminder:

“Goldman Sachs the Pillage People” is the most powerful Mafia family in the United States in every way, and more profitable than any of their peers:

1) Goldman Sachs

2) Lucchese

3) Bonanno

4) Gambino

5) Colombo

6) Genovese

Note:

By the way, the “Goldman Sachs the Pillage People” network of scoundrels and scam artists includes people such as former US Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson, Robert E. Rubin, Goldman’s former co-chairman, Stephen Friedman, a former chairman of Goldman and many other influential people.

“Goldman Sachs the Pillage People” has been among the symbols of American capitalism around the world for a long time, but people from around the world has started to wake up, and realize that this is just another American capitalist symbol that has got rotten to the core.

Today the real question about “Goldman Sachs the Pillage People” is:

Goldman Sachs is it a Cancer or just a Parasite of the US and global financial system?

LIBYA & QADDAFI AND THE FACTS THAT CAN'T BE DENIED

1. There is no electricity bill in Libya; electricity is free for all its citizens.

2. There is no interest on loans, banks in Libya are state-owned and loans given to all its citizens at 0% interest by law.

3. Home considered a human right in Libya – Gaddafi vowed that his parents would not get a house until everyone in Libya had a home. Gaddafi’s father has died while him, his wife and his mother are still living in a tent.

4. All newlyweds in Libya receive $60,000 Dinar (US$50,000) by the government to buy their first apartment so to help start up the family.

5. Education and medical treatments are free in Libya. Before Gaddafi only 25% of Libyans are literate. Today the figure is 83%.

6. Should Libyans want to take up farming career, they would receive farming land, a farming house, equipments, seeds and livestock to kick- start their farms – all for free.

14. 40 loaves of bread in Libya costs $ 0.15

Ricardo: I already knew most of the above information about Libya under the Gaddafi government.

After Gaddafi the Libyan people are going to get what the American system has provided to the American people in a big way: they are going to get screwed every way possible, and end up with nothing.

NATO - the international criminal organization - already destroyed a large part of the infrastructure of Libya that took a long time for the Gaddafi government to build it.

Now NATO and their accomplices are going to pillage everything in sight in Libya, and at the same time the Libyan people are going to find out what the Libyan revolution was all about, and most Libyans are going to go back to live in the desert with just a little tent a camel and nothing else.

Maybe the Intelligence agencies of various countries you had listed before are monitoring your comments, Ricardo. In these turbulent times, one has to learn how to be politically correct. Not like the good old days, when you can argue with a good Colonel (or General) and make your points, without the fear of being sent to a Gulag up in the middle of the Amazon Rain Forest. smilies/sad.gif

I am suppose to present my work in front of the Chinese diplomat.....anyway I am just lucky that he is not feeling well and I will always remember this fact until today that any diplomat or ambassador from China will not end up like Julio Iglesias who came to my country to visit the King and Queen to perform on stage for charity purposes. Most of the diplomatic mission of China will be deemed as full of secrecy and mystery. From my understanding of the case the Chinese Embassy is trying to counter balance the world power domination.
I am sorry to say this but it is simply the truth and it seems to me that my government wants my people to learn Chinese so that we will be on the same level of thinking with the Chinese. Both bold and world conqueror...I hope in a good way

Just for your info,

The most important city in this world which is full of surveillance camera is London. As a matter of fact any hacker can reach out for any kind of info as long as they are facing both the computers and laptops. As time goes by, technology has been upgraded with the development of mobile content. This kind of technology will only make tracking both the missing person and criminals more efficient for both the British secret service and the police.

For example the British secret service will always be on alert whenever the Queen is not in her palace or even having dinner with Ms. Jennifer Lopez at the Hilton.... well ......just an example on how the British secret service spy on famous people....

interference with "down time" entertainment activities is another.

Prado Junior and most of the orla in Copacabana has cameras trained on it. Originally it was for catching the license plate numbers of illegal activity participants, what it has grown to ... I got a kick out of doing a real crazyman stunt one night in a zone I knew was not a blind spot in the coverage. It was hilarious - the jovem in one of the internet shops part way across town from there saw me walking by the next day and went crazy inside the joint pointing out the window at me, waving frantically at me and mimiced what I had done! I felt famous.

Listen kid. In my young days, the British Secret Service was called Her Majesty´s Secret Service headed by Mr.M and ably assisted by his minions like 001...........00N. It is disgusting to hear that Her Own Secret Service is spying on her while she dines with a commoner like Jennifer (who I am sure was trying to get H.M. into some sort of nefarious business deal).
