Becoming the 6th Largest Economy Was the Easy Part. Now the Real Work Starts for Brazil PDF Print E-mail
2011 - December 2011
Written by Ernest Barteldes

Business Park in Diadema, Brazil In recent weeks, I have read a lot about how the economic growth of Brazil has made it possible to Brazilians to travel abroad more often and enjoy perks that were considered luxuries not too long ago.

In a New York magazine piece, New York mayor Michael Bloomberg was quoted as very happy that tourists from Brazil were here spending their "reais" alongside Japanese with their yens and Europeans with their (suffering) euros.

More recently, The New York Daily News mentioned a 'surge' in tourist visa applications from China and - yes, Brazil. Finally, yesterday there was a piece on the New York Times about a current Brazilian 'invasion' in South Florida, where successful visitors can walk around in their Guccis and Prada shoes without having to worry about being victims of the violence they face in cities like São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro.

While I am proud of Brazil's incredible accomplishments in the past decade (who would've thought they'd surpass Great Britain as an economic giant?), the truth is that there is still a lot to be done.

One thing is to at least reduce the gap between the have and have nots - something that Brazil's upper classes are not really looking forward to. There is a lot of social injustice there, and this will only end if the same classes that now flood our streets as tourists realize that they have to be open for it.

There are many upper middle class fellows there who are not too happy about the educational programs promoted by the government that have helped to lift its lower-wage citizens out of poverty.

I once mentioned here about a friend who was 'shocked' that her cleaning lady was taking computer lessons - after all, house servants have gone from generation to generation doing exactly that, and now that this generation is finding a way out of it, the upper middle class is scrambling with the prospect of no longer having anyone to pick up after them.

Also, urban violence is a problem that has not improved - in fact, it has worsened. While I have been lucky enough to never have been the victim of a mugging or anything like that (my bicycle was stolen once, but that happened in Greenwich Village in front of a church), I am well aware of how dangerous big cities have become there.

For instance, two years ago I was walking down Beira Mar Avenue in Fortaleza at around 1 AM and a TV reporter stopped me to ask if I wasn't 'reluctant of roaming the streets at that time of night.'

On this year's visit, a friend insisted in driving us home just a few blocks because she was afraid we'd be accosted by opportunists - and this is in Fortaleza, a city that is comparatively safer than larger cities like Rio or São Paulo.

Cost of life is also an issue. During our last visit, we spent a few days in my mom's apartment, so we didn't have to go to restaurants - I would go to the supermarket across the street and purchase groceries as needed.

It was scary to see how expensive food has become there - food costs almost as much as it does in the US. The same goes with real estate. As the NY Times mentioned, Brazilians are buying in Miami because the costs are much lower than in Brazil.

In the end, while I praise the country's accomplishments of late, I do have to say that there is a lot of room for improvement... I hope they get there soon enough.

Ernest, rather than writing critiques from NY, it would be better if you moved your ass down here & worked with the rest of us on making happen all those improvements you'd like to see.

And Ernest, when you do move your ass down here, expect me to work that ass like it has never been worked before.

"Brazilians are buying in Miami because the costs are much lower than in Brazil."

What the Times did not mentioned was..how shocked most Brazilians are with the high property tax insurances (much higher than in Brazil) and losing value. One Brazilian on local news: I thought Miami was the place to be for condo's, but now I see reality and I'm stuck with it.

My opinion: That's what you get when you want to be "TRENDY" and gamble on the recovery that doesn't happen here in Miami.
I know, I live here, but I'm glad those suckers pay a higher tax rate then I do, that subsidize my "homesteadtax examption" (that just keep my property tax low, not for foreigners)

increasing numbers of tourist visas for brazilians to travel to the united states seems odd and suspicious for a number of reasons .brazil has a very high number of visa overstayers in the usa who entered on tourist visas and our now illegal aliens .thus :brazilian nationals up to 85&#xof; them are illegal in the usa and never intended on abiding by us immigration laws on illegal presence.the brazilian ( a mere small number of primarily wealthy and educated ones bought condos in sunny isles beach and south miami beach because of the huge glut of epmty condos there that were overpriced and overbuilt thus realtors simply marketed to out of towners or international buyers who also got assistance in part time visas to live in them part time or to rent them out .in reality lots of them got burned and are putting them up for sale again . this writer has not written accurately and writes like a tourist travel agent slinging crap and misinformation .i,m surprised anyone would believe a word of it ..its election year in the usa and illegal immigration is front and center and many brazilian nationals of the poor unskilled and uneducated variety are in the usa on expired tourist visas their future seems to point to they are going to get deported permanently and if they have kids their going back to brazil too.florida is a major jump off point for brazilian nationals to enter and then fan out to operate as illegal aliens in places such as massachusetts, connecticutt, new york, new jersey, and california .americans have nearly 11 million illegal aliens and half of them are visas abscounders or overstayers.the latest group that is overstaying after entering on temporary visitors visas are from china india and of course brazilians .these nationals also have used smuggling organizations in mexico, the carribean, canada to cross the usa ,s borders (illegal entry}..as a sovereign nation of laws this can not be allowed to continue and the american majority want them stopped and want them deported ..

no easy solutions
written by Ernest Barteldes, January 02, 2012
It is interesting that so many posters wrote about illegal immigration when the article has nothing to do with the matter. In fact, this is a topic I avoid because there are no easy solutions... To deport 11 million illegals is a Tea Party pipe dream - there is no way it can be done without affecting local economies and separating families...
as for returning...

Whatever is accomplished will vanish when commodities decline along with credit. Brasilians will not be able afford the outrageous rates they are now paying.
R4 p litron
written by Simpleton, January 03, 2012
It used to be you could by two liters of 51 for about R4, now a liter of beer costs that even in the boonies and favelas. A fine cut of fresh beef - outrageous and for at least two years now (but not unlike in the US as the article points out regarding food price comparisons).

Ernest, forget the hijacking of your thread by the unwantables. Sections of the material are a repeat (or maybe just a repeat of something you posted as commentary under other articles?). You didn't really expect anything else did you?

Esteamed Dupla-Dotado, I concur, our true wisemann commentator always makes good points however I would not call him a Kraut, many semitic folks took on germanic surnames to avoid . . . It's like who can say what a "da Silva" is for certain.

Diogo, you are correct but please don't join the doomsayer crowd. We are all on this roller coaster ride, some just fly off the precipice or hit the bumpy spots at a bit different point in the course of things. Soft landing my ass!
nothing is more annoying then a leftist green horn foreign national talking crap about their host country .
written by usa, January 03, 2012
so you Ernie are in the usa writing such articles after being in the usa for you say 11 years !!!.that makes you a "green horn" ...and how is it you entered the usa ?could it have been a "tourist visa"?..your goofy uninformed statement that only tea party political activists want our laws on illegal presence enforced is insulting and ignorant fact:the majority of brazilian nationals in the united states 85% are illegal aliens who either crossed our borders with the assistance of smugglers or entered on tourist visas and overstayed .now if you dispute that or try and deny that you prove your arrogance and ignorance .one more thing "mr green horn" the majority of americans want illegal immigration stopped dead in its tracks and illegals presently in the usa deported .permanently .incidentally ,its a priveledge to get a visa to the usa ! not a right!!.the us congress and the us people decide who gets in and who gets their illegal disrespectfull criminal arse deported.americans are steadfast on this major issue and the noose is tightening on illegals in the usa .if brazil is all you say it is why in hell are you not in your country?.

And now, if we may, back to the article
written by Simpleton, January 05, 2012
I have found one good thing regarding the reduction in the gap between the haves and have nots in Brasil, it means more and more of the folks I know have an empty quarto de empregada I can shack up in on my way through (although I would still prefer the open air feel of asp's leaky cabana).smilies/grin.gif
I do not care about illegals; care more about boring nationalist "patriots" full of ethnocentrism
written by wordsdontmatter, January 05, 2012
Its the same everywhere (almost), catalans are boorish and ruin barcelona with their ethnic greatness of a past that never truly existed, and a present they fail to admit is mostly a benefit due to immigrants.

I lived 8 years in Europe, 2 in london, 6 in BCN, and realized i was a "stupid" american; but, now i realize it really is not all my fault. Our hegemonic culture / popular media business focused crap is just marketing to sell u s**t.

Most americans, as its our culture, are at least publicly courteous and deep down interested in other cultures (i.e. we love accents even if we do not know where Iowa is either). Still, everyone is really just victims of their environment, its like the Matrix.

Once you see, you take the pill u want.

I prefer the millionaires that make up congress to lose their job so we can have equal representation. I prefer beautiful brazilians, happy people, and even latins, Hispanics, cubans, mexicans or whatever over trite people who want to put people in jail for "war on drugs", deport people for war on immigrants.. kill people and lock up americans now indef for war on terror.. heck we have a real War on liberty here.

its oke, as silly little cogs in the cultural machine will just babble until they are enveloped by obvious real tragedy coming to the states. The economic "crisis" fraud showed us what the real heart of america is, coming out of the wash consensus. Believing the myth and dilusion of our self inherent greatness is dumb and dangerous.

I studied at FIU for 1.5 years Brazilian Portuguese, and International Relations. Now, I am at Towson Univ, honors college, major in Intl Studies, Poly Sci, Social science, minor economy and geog and env. I am 40..but luckily look younger. I did not work for 6 years in spain, lived off past investments, and did sub let many of my extra rooms in central BCN for $$ after selling my house in states too. I rode the internet boom, and the housing boom and got out.

Now, I ride the education book, and then I ride the Brasil boom..

u can have your states buddy, and after I return to FIU and get my MAGG (masters in global governance) "preparing students for global careers in an intl city" ..DEPORT ME PLEASE...

regardless, i will be happy to just live in Rio and Brazil and enjoy happy people, great looking girls (like Barcelona, minus the happy part there), and a rising pride with a growing competitive world level nation. WE have great disparity here too.. and UK has the highest gini co eff in western nations.. Brazils is bad but things like familia bolsa and really just more of a growing team spirit, seems to me, means as they enter the Intl stage more powerfully (leading the G20 etc).. more things to come!

I prefer to spend "armageddon", end of the world, or just the end of YOUR world, in Brazil..even if i must clean homes, run a favela, or yuck..work for some govt, think tank, teach english.. or spanish or just have faith that Jesus was f**king right chump.. Look at the birds.. and the flowers.. they eat, and are clothed. Also, brazil has the highest fastest protestant / pentecostal movement. Regardless of your faith, it bodes well for breaking the catholic imperial age hold on society and signifies change..

One question, why are so many people so angry here? I found this site yesterday and notice a few people who just are obsessed with saying silly stuff, and angry.

I was angry in barcelona too.. maybe its culture shock or just being surrounded by stupid people where u live (sometimes thats U).

I hope u guys speak like this in person..those angry ones.. as I doubt u do. I do..esp when drinking, and always give people the first punch.

I'm not a big fan of the angry tone myself, but, I am also not much of a fan of pseudo pedantic prattling by someone who blows sunshine up our collective rectum professing to be Mr. International Happy Perfect that claims to flawlessly ride economic booms, then exits at just the right time...and then conveniently (and sanctimoniously) derides others for having an opinion.smilies/smiley.gif

Go back to whatever PIIG society you came from and take your simplistic world view with you...and thank you for the resume...very impressive.smilies/smiley.gif

But, of course, have a drink first tough guy.smilies/smiley.gif

Forget my tendancy to be mais bruta - you rung the bell with:
