Brazilian theater started to flourish in the '30s with the production of texts by national authors. Until then, the stages of the major theaters produced Italian and German operas and exhibited established names, such as Isadora Duncan, Sara Bernhardt and the lyric tenor Enrico Caruso, among others.

For anyone who is planning a vacation or visit to Brazil, I would kindly ask you to reconsider. Immediately after the savage attacks on the World Trade Center, the civilized global community expressed their outrage and issued official statements condemning the attacks and offering support to America in her time of need. President Henrique Cardoso of Brazil was amongst those who expressed his "official" support and sincere disgust with the attacks.

He was harshly criticized by his own people for those remarks. In the Southern regions of Brazil, the population took to the streets, expressing their jubilation with the success of the attacks, just as the Palestinians celebrated in the West Bank. The only difference was the magnitude of the celebrations in Brazil dwarfed those that transpired near Israel. It is a largely Arab population in that region.

In Rio de Janeiro, T-shirts with the image of an American flag bowing to the likenesses of Osama Bin Laden, Saddam Hussein and Fidel Castro are suddenly en vogue this week. They even hung a 50'X 50' banner of Saddam Hussein at a soccer match this weekend, to demonstrate their support for all who resist America's Imperialism. The newspapers, magazines, television stations and chit chat in bars and restaurants are filled with gloating commentaries with regard to the tragedy we suffered.

What is more disturbing is the silence of the knowledgeable Brazilians who fail to challenge these cold-hearted, callous and ill-timed commentaries. The day following the attacks, 5,000 Brazilian students rallied in downtown Rio de Janeiro for a domestic protest that quickly changed tone and expressed extreme anti-American sentiment, which featured the burning of an effigy of President George W. Bush. Commentaries, Opinion columns and articles are full of the following statements. "It is wonderful to see the American's brought to their knees. Maybe they will finally realize that they are no better than us." "It is tragic that so many foreigners were killed in the attacks, but America finally is getting what it deserves."

These are a just a sample of the kinder comments that have appeared in their newspapers and journals daily since the attacks. These opinions are not caused by our arrogance, these are the pathetic comments of an envious, callous and petty society. The official remarks of the Brazilian government are positive, but their actions are quite cynical. The FBI requested the assistance of Brazil to investigate a suspected Mid-Eastern terrorist training camp which sits on the border of Paraguay and Brazil. The Brazilian government agreed to fully cooperate, but only after leaking the story to media to ensure the terrorists had plenty of time to seek refuge elsewhere.

These actions are from a people who requested and accepted $5 billion dollars in U.S. aid two weeks ago, in order to prop up their failing economy. It occurs to me that every dollar Americans would spend down here on vacation, would perhaps be better appreciated by our true allies such as England or other European nations, such as those countries which suffered economic losses and a downturn in tourism because of last years outbreak of hoof and mouth disease.

Argentina, a close neighbor of Brazil, is also suffering through an economic crisis, but managed to pause and express sincere support of America. Chile and Australia are also alternatives; they too have shown exceptional support for us. I would ask that those of you who do not have plans to visit Brazil, think twice before doing so or purchasing a product made in Brazil. If they hate us so vehemently, then they must also despise that most powerful symbol of American strength; the U.S. Dollar.

Recent news from Brazil indicated that the airlines now allow [since Sept 11] passengers to carry firearms while on board. The gun issue is very controversial here in Canada and I am curious to know whether this experiment has succeeded in Brazil. Many anti-gun people here expect that Brazilians will shoot each other while flying. Can you advise?

I am an American currently performing research in Salvador, Bahia. As part of my research, I need to examine specific articles in Brazzil magazine from April, 1993 to February, 1997. Unfortunately, the articles or issues I need are not included in your website back issue section.

I would like to comment on Mr. Valente letter "Portuguese Is Not Brazilian" in your August issue. First of all, I'm Carioca and I speak Portuguese the same way New Yorkers speak English, but we all know that lack of education in any country of the world can destroy any language. I have some Portuguese friends here in Canada that took me quite a while to understand the Portuguese they speak. By the way, Canada is a bilingual country, with the great majority speaking English. I have the habit of reading Brazzil, "quando estou cagando no banheiro e não quando estou a cagaire na casa de banho."

I would also like to congratulate Mark Eberhart for his letter. Only a blind person can not see what is the whole South America's corruption. Look at North America until the border with Mexico. Canada, one of the best countries to raise a family and the USA, a place that if they open their doors, will be flooded with us South Americans. I had to leave Brazil, more specifically, Rio de Janeiro , to give a future to my daughter, because of those ladrões do Planalto.

Hi, Bruce Gilman, this may seem really random, but I just wanted to compliment you on the article you wrote for Brazzil on Mestre Ambrósio. I've recently begun listening to mangue and Pernambucan music, and your article helped with a lot of definitions. I'm Brazilian, but I only began listening to Brazilian music two years ago, as I have spent the last 10 years of my life abroad.

I went to one of their shows but didn't appreciate the music as much as I appreciated their CDs after reading your article. Have you been following the latest developments? In the past two months that I've spent in São Paulo, I seem to have only met Pernambucanos. What I think was special about your article is how you were able to translate something so Northern and Brazilian into US language/culture. I have to run, but I just wanted to tell you that sincerely, it was a very good article.

I wonder what the difficulties are in trying to find a job in Brazil, while still living in America. I live in Arizona, and would like to find a way to secure a job before I travel to Brazil. Can you tell me more on how to do this?

Also, how hard is it to find a trustworthy employer? I understand that much may be done `under the table'. But will people honor these agreements? Obviously, Spanish is a useful tool to have. But how necessary is it? Living so close to Mexico, I have picked up a very rudimentary knowledge of Spanish. But I've been told that that may be useless, since Brazil has a different dialect of Spanish.

This is in response to the article "No Apologies Needed." Brazilians mention those things because they are indeed ashamed that those types of problems exist in their country. But guess what? They exist in the US too! We are talking crime, poverty, crappy economy! Matter of fact those same problems are huge problems in the US. However the media is guilty of portraying the US as a very wealthy place. You know, like on Babewatch or one of those other shows. The slums that I saw in Rio reminded me of the slum in the US, Jamaica, Trinidad, Mexico. I always find it quite amusing when some American from a wealthy US suburb is exposed to slums overseas. That same suburbanite needs to take a trip to his local inner city area where he will see the same suffering. Violence, drugs, hopelessness and despair. It's the same everywhere!

Porque a midia pertence ao políticos, vocês são os responsáveis diretos de fazerem a noticia do que é realmente o Brasil chegar ao povo brasileiro e estrangeiro.

O nosso pais é um manancial que é estorquido cotidianamente por politicos corruptos, administradores corruptos, gente que basta conhecer político para fazer associações que tirem vantagem do poder. Um esquema tipico, é o que acontece em algumas prefeituras. Por exemplo, estes fatos já aconteceram na prefeitura de Niquelãndia, Goiás. Não posso afirmar que acontece hoje, pois não tenho mais contato com a prestação de contas.

a) Geralmente a pessoa que ganha uma obra tem que assinar um contrato em três vias. Porém, porque as pessoas que atendem estão sempre ocupadas, a pessoa é solicitada a assinar o contrato em (seis) vias e em branco.

b) Volta depois e leva a sua via do contrato, com o valor real, enquanto as outras (três vias) que ficaram assinadas são preenchidas com valor duas, três vezes maior e fica como um verdadeiro comprovante para a prestação de contas da prefeitura.

c) Geralmente, muitos materiais são comprados para os associados do poder, enquanto a nota fiscal vai para a prefeitura pagar.

d) Geralmente, os cheques dos professores, ou outro qualquer funcionário são feitos, e se a pessoa demora, são desviados. Aí, a pessoa reclama. Recebe uma desculpa qualquer. Se não se agradou da desculpa e insiste, a secretaria responsável tem que preencher outro pedido de pagamento, e aquele cheque original continua desaparecido, mas os documentos de prestações de contas continuam em ordem (fez outra ordem de pagamento e o primeiro não foi recebido)

e) Supermercados ou outras lojas tiram no fim do mês notas em nome da prefeitura. Embora não tenham vendido absolutamente nada.É por ai que o dinheiro nosso, público, vai parar em outras contas, alimenta a corrupção e mantém o povo brasileiro em estado de miséria, sempre com a mão extendida para os políticos que lhe dá as sobras.

Essa estória de violência já é muito antiga. Quem não se lembra dos velhos compêndios bíblicos, que contam de Caim e Abel, acerca do primeiro crime da história? Do seqüestro de José levado para o Egito por traficantes; da estória de Herodes, quando procurou eliminar os primogênitos da região, para evitar a vinda de Jesus. Há muitos outros fatos dessa natureza criminal, o qual está imbuído na natureza humana!

Afinal, com chegada do Mestre, que ensinava belas lições, entre as quais a de dar a outra face, que até hoje não foi entendida por ninguém, devido a certos predicados que jamais serão extirpados do ser humano, emitido dos púlpitos de todas as religiões que surgiram em nome do Cristianismo.

Todo mal é decorrente, da vaidade, da ambição, do orgulho e da hipocrisia, que misturados geram a ignorância, a pobreza, a fome e a miséria!

Como dizia, essa ações terroristas, nunca terminarão enquanto não aprendermos a lição de dar a outra face, como troco aceito por toda a humanidade. Não ao revide pura e simples. Mas o revide no sentido inverso do que se espera agora: outro bombardeio maior que cause um holocausto de fim de mundo!

Como assim? Explico: a concentração de renda, graças à inteligência de alguns povos chegou ao máximo de valorização monetária, esquecendo-se que virtualmente com isso, foram a vagar, escravizando os sem dotes de conhecimento, chegando à ponto da irreversibilidade. Agora seria o fato de trilharmos por outro caminho para recuperá-los, premiando-os pelo aprendizado, se analfabetos, dar-lhe um abrigo: se operários, dar-lhe um salário digno, se doentes, dar-lhes condições de cura a custo irrisório: se famintos, dar-lhes o que comer, se injustiçados e sedentos, aplicar os preceitos ditados por Jesus!

É o mínimo que se espera de um povo inteligente. Que se consiga uma forma equânime de solução. A outra face que me refiro está ao alcance dessas pessoas que são os detentores de toda inteligência do globo terrestre no momento.

Revidar, nunca! Que venham com um novo estilo de guerra é o que todos esperamos, e não a sua propria destruição!

Meu nome é Aluizio. Vivono USA há nove anos. Os EUA são o país que mais ajuda outros no mundo inteiro e mesmo assim é o mais criticado. Financiou empréstimos a outros países quando estes atravessaram momentos difíceis e ainda assim é conhecido como responsável pela dívida que estes países mesmos fizeram. Colaborou com a entrada de empresas que geraram empregos em países que hoje o acusam de explorador. Desenvolveu tecnologias que são utilizadas no mundo inteiro e mesmo assim os Estados Unidos são chamado de "imperialista".

Os Estados Unidos são um país que até hoje ajuda todos aqueles que passam por catástrofes. Até hoje não recebeu nenhum retorno e nunca  obteve auxílio quando enfrentou problemas como terremotos, furacões e terrorismo.

Os EUA hoje são formados por aqueles que vieram em busca de  melhor qualidade de vida, em busca de realizações que não conseguiram realizar em seus países de origem. Aqui vivem pessoas de todo o mundo, de todas as raças, incluindo aquelas que viviam e morreram no ataque terrorista,  elas vieram de 80 países diferentes incluindo o Brasil.

Aqui conseguimos as oportunidades e qualidade de vida  que infelizmente será muito dificil para os países que criticam  os Estados Unidos atingirem. Exemplo disso é o Brasil onde a informação é muitas vezes  manipulada com a finalidade de desviar a atenção do povo da miséria interna . O Brasil é um país maravilhoso, mas sem um sistema sério, com políticos e "intelectuais" com discursos demagógicos e com um governo que promove utopia como idealismo. Um país que precisa de um modelo.

Os EUA  estão em busca de terroristas, não de um país. O país foi atacado 4 vezes pelo mesmo grupo que promove ataques na França, Inglaterra e outros países afetados pelo terrorismo que tem crescido no mundo em escala geometrica. 

Terrorismo não é religião nem tão pouco ideologia, Terrorismo é uma das coisas que precisa desaparecer do mundo.

É hora do Brasil aprender com os EUS o que é patriotismo. É hora do Brasil aprender com os EUA o que é ter um ideal e defendê-lo. É hora do Brasil aprender com os Estados Unidos o que é ter um sistema que funciona.

God Bless America. God Help Brazil.

O mundo está chocado. Depois de assistir a uma grande catástrofe que resultou em dezenas de milhares de inocentes mortos. Trata-se do atentado contra o World Trade Center. Um atentado contra a vida, a liberdade e a democracia. Pessoas do mundo inteiro se sensibilizaram com as cenas chocantes e o sofrimento das pessoas que morreram lá.

Pessoas que tiveram uma vida feliz, saudável, e cheia de oportunidades. Realmente, as pessoas do mundo são muito solidárias, e isso pode ser comprovado vendo-se essa comoção geral. Mas o engraçado é que ninguém se assusta com os países pobres.

No mundo inteiro, todos os dias morrem milhares, talvez dezenas de milhares de pessoas de fome e doenças. Pessoas que nunca tiveram um dia tranquilo na vida. Pessoas para quem a vida foi a sobrevivência. Mas ninguém se incomoda. Países que foram explorados pelos Estados Unidos hoje têm pessoas que morrem de fome, mas ninguém se incomoda.

Na África morrem diariamente milhares de pessoas de Aids, enquanto os EUA não liberam os remédios, porque estão preocupados com o lucro dos royalties. E ninguém se importa.

Mas o mundo inteiro sofre pelos americanos mortos.

Os EUA invadiram a Guatemala, financiaram os contras Nicaragüenses, causaram o genocídio de 800.000 ruandeses em 1994, bombardearam o palácio La Rosada no Chile, sustentaram a ditadura de Idi Amim Dada, sanguinário que comia literalmente seu próprio povo, treinaram os torturadores do mundo todo, inclusive os brasileiros, sacrificaram o povo iraquiano, destituíram governos matando a humanidade em nome da humanidade, bancaram e armaram Israel e subjugaram Palestinos.

Defenderam o regime do Xá Reza Palevhi, no Irã, a ditadura Turca, invadiram a baía dos porcos, em Cuba, anexaram parte do México à força, jogaram as bombas em Nagasaki e Hiroshima quando a guerra já havia acabado, apoiaram incondicionalmente o regime do apartheid na África do Sul, financiaram a UNITA em Angola, bombardearam junto com outros países a república espanhola, bancaram as ditaduras militares na América Latina, inclusive as do narcotraficante Hugo Banzer e Somoza, ocuparam o Vietnã, mataram seus próprios soldados, dividiram a Coréia do Norte e do Sul.

Mas ninguém se incomodou com as vítimas desses atentados cometidos pelos EUA. Muito mais do que dezenas de milhares. Talvez dezenas de milhões. Talvez mais. Mas ninguém se importou.
