Porto Murtinho, in the Brazilian PantanalTo the uninitiated, Porto Murtinho may seem like the middle of nowhere - or simply the end of the road. A well-paved Brazilian interstate ends here. No bridge connects it across the river to Paraguay. A few bait shops and the squalid shacks of a displaced indigenous tribe dot the opposite bank.

I want to know more about the indgenous tribe in the area. What do they do? Just hang out and chuck spears at people passing by?
What kind of fish are in the river, besides the one mentioned? Are they exotic?
The most important question, completely and bewilderingly neglected by the writer who's a business journalist, is this little village's economy based on?

Economy of Porto Murtinho
written by Guest, June 15, 2006
I have not been to this town, but I lived in Brazil for many years and visited the Pantanal last year. Currently tourism for both recreational fishing and Pantanal exploration are strong economic factors. In the past the area was relatively self-sufficient and isolated from the rest of Brazil and the state of MG do Sul, but they would extract a local tea herb which was sold to Uruguay and Argentina.
