A retiree over 62 may apply for Permanent Alien Residence staus in Brasil. Brasil demands a regular stream of income to a Brasilian bank (to assure you are not a penniless bum). My question is this: what is the advantage of obtaining permanent resident status. What can you do (other than not get tourist visas) that you would not otherwise be able to? I own a house, have a bank account, a CPF already--and for a number of years. Does anybody know what advantages Perm Res status offers -- to the resident, not to the country.

Well, you can legally work and you won't be fined if you stay in Brazil for more than six months out of the year. That's all I can think of, off the top of my head. Ahn1 and you're eligible for vacancies in public school, can hold jobs in public administration, that kind of stuff. But if you were a retirre, I think the only thing that would interets you is being able to stay in Brazil for more than six months a year without running up a (potentially quite enormous) fine.
