Ok people,
Thats the problem: the image of Brazil in the world is that: only rio and sao paulo! Both Suck!
If you want to go to Brazil, try the cities of the state of minas gerais, try búzios (is next to rio), try pantanal, try chapada dos guimaraes, try sao tomé das letras, try blumenau, try curitiba, try porto alegre, try Natal, try angra dos reis, try amazonia (if you like wild adventure), try chapada diamantina, try belo horizonte (nice people there), try santa catarina, try foz do iguacu (with amazing waterfalls there), try vila verde.... etc.. there are hundreds of amazing places in brazil!!! If you want to go to a place like rio, go to Cancun. Cancun is the same, but 1.000 times better! Rio sucks. Sao paulo too. And remember, BRAZIL IS NOT ONLY RIO AND SAO PAULO!!! BRAZIL IS ONE OF THE BIGGEST COUNTRIES IN THE WORLD, all you have to do, is go by yourself.... and then you will know the real brazil, and not rio!

Tem gente que mora aqui e gosta de morar aqui. Que estes lugares que você mencionou são bonitos, sim eu concordo, mas tambêm não precisa jogar tijolos no meu telhado só para mostrar que existem outros.

You can't compare Cancun to Rio for various reasons! The size of each city, Cancun is only an tourists city. I agree that there are losts of other cities to visit in Brazil. So depends on what you wanna do. Rio offers at the same time various options, for the working people, for the tourists and etc. I agree that Rio could be more friendly to tourism and etc. Buzios, Cabo Frio, Araruama, Arraial do Cabo, Saquarema, Petropolis, Teresopolis and Friburgo are our backyard. So you have all these options driving 2-3 hours from Rio. From Sao Paulo you have so many options too! So, merrrmão não esculacha, com a minha cidade, valeu!

I partly agree with "Guest" when he/she says that Rio and São Paulo suck.
It is true that they are far from being good places to live in on account of their local problems.
I guess the problem is that the Brazilian official tourism chambers only advertise Rio and SP abroad. Sometimes Bahia and Foz do Iguaçú. That's too bad for the other states and cities in Brazil. I'm sure that foreigners would enjoy Brazil much more if they had a chance to get to know that our huge country is not only made up of two cities.

I am a Carioca, ok I know that my city nowadays is far from being I nice place to live, because of their Local problems. Yes is true, we have so many problems as anybody but in the last 3 decades the city got worst. It is very different from the city I grew up. So, again everything depends on what you want to do, see and age. There are amazing places in Brazil that you can go! I live in Portland, Oregon this city is very clean and everything works! But is boring, this are the words of my 18 years old daughter and 14 years old son. But if you want to snowboarding it is cool, if you want to surf, bad idea, one might get hit by logs on the beach. When I was 15 my father was transfered to Brasilia, I thought... I am going to a place that has nothing to do with me, I am living my beach, my friends.... I was wrong!!! It was the best year I lived in my life.

Na minha adolescência, eu visitei o Rio de Janeiro e fiquei encantado com uma cidade linda e maravilhosa. Os anos passaram e a decadência atingiu a cidade, muito por força de pouca vontade política de transformar a cidade num lugar prazeroso para o seus habitantes e turistas. Há poucos anos atrás, eu estive novamente no Rio e me assustei. Senti vergonha. Vergonha em saber que o que eu vi ainda é rotulando pela mídia como Cidade Maravilhosa e, pior ainda, continua sendo o "cartão de visitas" do Brasil.
Sabemos que os turistas estrangeiros têm a mania de generalizar. Como o Rio é o grande portão de entrada para o turista estrangeiro no Brasil, entristece-me saber que tão logo eles saiam do aeroporto Tom Jobim eles vão se deparar com sujeira, podridão, favelas por todos os lados e aquele sentimento de a qualquer hora ele será vítima de algum tipo de violência. E pior do que isso é a gente saber que as autoridades pouco fazem para reverter este quadro. O que risco decorrente de tal quadro é o que o turista estrangeiro pense que o restante das cidades brasileiras é tão paupérrimo, miserável, sujo e constantemente a mercê de quaisquer tipos de violência quanto o Rio.
Por um lado, torço muito para que o Rio volte a ser uma cidade segura e prazerosa para o turista estrageiro. Por outro, lastimo que tantas outras cidades brasileiras com muito mais condições de mostrar aos turistas estrangeiros um clima mais hospitaleiro e agradável sejam por eles ignoradas em virtude da falta de interesse de nossa mídia em divulgar nossas outras cidades no exterior.

This brings up an interesting thought.
A question to Brazilians or those living in Brazil: What advertisments for American cities have you seen? I would expect that New York, L.A., Miami, and Orlando would top the list... but other than that?
There is alot more to see in America also, as opposed to these cities.....

Eu concordo com tudo que voce disse, O Rio de hoje já não é mais aquele em que eu me criei. Fruto de má administração nas últimas décadas. Gostaria que fosse diferente! Mas entenda que como Carioca da gema não pude me conter! No Brasil existem muitas outras cidades lindas para se visitar, como voce falou. Mas mesmo com todos os problemas de cidade grande, e com a má propaganda que fazem dela, ainda atrai por sua beleza natural.
