Robin,

You don't say where you are located. But here's what I can recommend regarding your need for Portuguese lessons to prepare you for your stay in Salvador. First, I recommend you consider picking up some Brazilian Portuguese language books that come with cassette tape or CD exercises. I am married to a Brazilian, but my wife is attending school in Bahia while - at least for the time being - am still here in Indiana.

As Portuguese instruction and opportunities to use Portuguese are limited in Indianapolis, I have used cassette tape instruction extensively (usually in my car while traveling on business) and have found them to be invaluable.

Second, I recommend you broadcast your need to one of the national Brazilian email networks. You can find listings on my web site at http://www.iei.net/~pwagner/brazilhome.htm . The site is extensive and I don't want to make this TOO easy on you So, once you've read the instructions at the site for site navigation begin looking for a gallery button titled "Brazilians in the U.S. (lists)". There you will find the distribution lists you need. I also very much recommend you review my "Social Programs in Brazil" gallery, since it primarily details the work of Afro Blocos and other groups in Salvador. And be sure to read some of the articles I've authored under my real and pen (Philip Mizewski) names in the left frame, as well as exploring other galleries to enhance your Brazil familiarity quotient prior to traveling. Good luck!
