I have been looking for a Umbanda Temple somewhere in New York City or close to it. I would appreciate if someone could help me finding one. Or to find a small group of people who are interested in getting together to develop somethink Umbanda related. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Tenho procurado por um Centro de Umbanda em New York ou nas proximidades. Se alguem puder me ajudar a localizar um centro, ficarei grato. Tambem tenho interesse em conhecer pessoas que queiram iniciar alguma coisa relacionada a Umbanda.

someone correct me if I'm a bit vague about this, but as I understand Umbanda is a spiritual/religious movement related to Candomble & Macumba (and santeria in cuba, and vodun in haiti..A spiritual system with its roots in Africa, but also has some influences from Catholicism); my understanding is that Umbanda is a modification of Candomble mostly in the southern states of Brasil. It's a pretty interesting thing. And I'd be happy to hear some replies too (i'll be happy to hear of any locations in the New England area..even if not temples, just people who'd know a lot)

Some more critical experts say there is no similarity between Candomblé (an African religion) and Umbanda (a syncretic religion that mixes among other beliefs catholicism and candomblé). But most Brazilians seem to think they are only one religion. And many practice both, besided Catholicism and some evangelism. just for guarantee. Boris, it's odd that living in Rio you haven't seen umbanda manisfestations all around you. It's not only the Iemanjá festivities on New Year's Eve, but the beaches at night have always rests of offers to the godly entities. And terreiros in Rio are much more numerous than churches. You should visit one. It will greatly educate you.

I see plenty of manifestations... They are pretty obvious ranging from small altars on the corners, to full scale rituals neaar the water... except I disagree that what is left on the beach at night is acceptable as offerings to the gods ... Isn´t (718) code for Queens?

Hmm Boris where do you live? In fact (718) has been extended to some parts of Nassau county which is a part of Long Island, it borders Queens. But I'm more than sure that place is in Brooklyn but it might be one in Queens, LI I doubt, but call and see.

I am pretty familiar with New York. In my experience, many people tend to confuse LI City and Flushing with Long Island (technically they might be right). There is also a pretty significant Brazilian community in Astoria... (718) also covers the Bronx... so I guess, the only way to resolve this mistedy is for someone to call the number... Is there anyone in the area? I don´t feel like shelling out the dough for an international phone call...
