One of the only holidays I dont care about. I think Valentines Day is bullshit, it comes to the conclusion that our girlfriends/wives arent treated well the rest of the year. Its a totally made up holiday as well...anyways, just wondering if this is celebrated in Brasil? If so, do they have those little heart shaped candies with messages written on them? Does anyone really care? (I know Ill probably get some backlash from the women on this forum)

In Brazil is called Dias dos Namorados and is celebrated June 12. It's more exclusively for lovers and the commercial hysteria is a tad lower. Less heart shaped stuff, more free-association item for gift.

I love Valentine's Day. There is something about watching uncomfortable 6 feet 2 inches Black Men (only because I'm black do I single them out) dominating the card section searching for the right one or walking down the streets trailed by floating-heart shaped balloons, a bundle or roses in their hands....a look on their faces that say "don't say nuthin' to me". I have an Afro-German friend visiting and she had to help a poor guy who was clueless at the perfume counter. She warned him that that he just can't buy any perfume for her because women generally have a chemistry with their perfume. But she showed him one that most women would love. And the "Playas" are trapped. They have to make a choice. Can't be with all of the women so they have to choose one. You should see the sweatin'. Lot of playa games are blown because of Valentine's Day. What I hate about Valentines' Day is that because I waited for my friend to visit before my long term move to Brazil I am now trapped in the United States. The whole American Northteast is under snow. We (Philadelphia) received about two feet!!!!! All flights are canceled. And I heard that Rio is about 40 (celsius). *#@**#+@ (I do curse but this will suffice for now). Peace

No, I wanna trade first!!! It's so fucking muggy and hot here I can barely move. I've got brotoejo all over my forearms from the heat. My colleague Silvia keeps on laughing at me and saying "Wrong skin for this kind of climate, man." Re: the Valentine's Day thing... Here in Rio, the players just "dissappear" for a week on each side of Lover's Day. Both men and women are really adept at this. You know the score: you call and can't get an answer... They're never home, their celular is mysteriously "unconnected or out of area"... You give up. Then, three weeks later, you run into them at a botequim and it's like "Macunaima! Que saudades!!! Onde 'tava você, cara? Tentei te ligar mil vezes...." And then a motel.

LOL@ all the men in this thread. How romantic to see so many speak about V-day, well it's come and gone in the states. Hey Adrianerik I had a "tall black man" haha, I left him at the alter last year this time. Sorry I am committment phobic, that's why I dislike V-day. The best news I got on V-day is I may be teaching in Brazil soon, so we shall see. I'm being whooed those Brazilian men sure know how to sweet talk a woman. The last visit I had there back in August, well I met a fellas named Carlos who promised me a good time (teehee to say the least). Boricua blushing delightfully. PS, don't feel so bad about that snow Adrianerik . . . where I'm at 21 inches, eekk no school tomorrow, what a teacher craves is more time to mull over her students work (Edited by Boricua at 7:50 pm on Feb. 17, 2003)

Boricua, A female friend of mine saw your post and is now laughing. "Sweet talking?" she says. "Eaí, gatinha... Sabe, você é a nora mamãe sempre queria." I'll admit that Brazilian men are always handy with the pick-up line and that some of them can be quite sweet. And even greater percentage are brega p'ra cacete, however.

Ahhh I see Macunaima, oh no I pray not. I'm so not marriage material lol . . . I think like a man lol. Is that you Aderianerk? Poor baby, I hope you get to your destination safely. Wait! Brazil? I don't like you now. I need to get some sun, although I'm natually a canela hued lady, who can resist the rays of beautiful Brazil. Oh I'm not too bad, I do love men, just not one at a time lol . . . ouch.

LOL, Boricua. My favorite snappy come-back to a stupid pick-up line occurred in Ouro Preto some years ago. A cute girl came out of an ice-cream store sucking on a popsicle and one of the male loafers on the corner sighed and said "How I wish I was that popsicle." With out missing a beat, the girl shot back: "P'ra que? P'ra ter um pauzinho enfiado no seu cú?"
