The Brazilian large press celebrated with confetti and serpentine the shelving of project CFJ (Federal Council of Journalism). In the midst of the Christmas season, this premature Carnaval, inappropriate and careless, calls for reflection.

I’m slowly awakening from a fitful sleep on a too-long plane ride from Miami Beach. I changed planes in Rio, and am now beginning to descend into Confins International Airport, Belo Horizonte, Brazil. But I’m still partly asleep, and wondering what I am doing so far from home. I also ponder what adventures are in store for me.

Just before Christmas, I was surfing the local TV stations and had a pleasant surprise—a program which was actually worth watching. Amidst the usual imbecilic soap operas and moronic chat shows appeared an arts program called “Metropolis” on TV Cultura which featured an American musician called John Pizzarelli.

The head of the UN Peacekeeping Mission in Haiti, Brazilian Lieutenant-General Augusto Heleno, should be replaced given his deference, in word and deed, to Prime-Minister Gerard Latortue's excesses. Brazilian President Lula is ultimately responsible for Heleno’s reckless actions. Does Lula know he is sacrificing Haiti’s poor for his international ambitions?

Secrecy shrouding Brazil's nuclear capabilities, suspected technological advances and provocative statements made by Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva during his presidential campaign alarmed U.S. nuclear control advocates. But, according to Secretary of State Colin Powell, future nuclear weapons proliferation by Brasília no longer is a distinct possibility. Could Haiti be the missing ingredient? |
