"My blessed women, my blessed women," run the lyrics of a samba-enredo (samba anthem or theme song). This song, written in honor of the most celebrated women in Brazilian history, will be sung on February 27 by at least 3,500 foliões (festival goers) from Porto da Pedra, one of the biggest samba schools in Rio de Janeiro. It is Carnaval time in Rio.

Interesting article. It's nice to hear about a samba school funding their Carnaval parade without the aid of some jogo de bicho and drug money. I hope this trend continues. However, it would've also been nice to learn some basic info about the cost breakdown and sponsorship (ie. an estimate of how much was spent on floats and costumes, for example, or what percentage of their Carnaval budget was contributed by the corporate sponsors and how much was raised through the school's own fundraising efforts). Still, it was a good read...
