The hopes of undocumented Brazilians in the United States got a boost when last May 25, 2006, the U.S. Senate approved by a vote of 62 to 36 S. 2611 (the Comprehensive Immigration Reform Act of 2006). What follows now at the U.S. Congress is a clash of two rival ideologies for what Immigration Law reform should be about because unlike the House of Representatives measure H.R. 4437, S. 2611 is not law-enforcement oriented. S. 2611 is a bipartisan Immigration Law proposal.

On November 25, 2005, George Best, Britain's iconic football genius and self-destructive prodigal son, died in an expensive, private London hospital, from complications following a liver transplant in 2001. Bests' death was not unexpected - he had been drinking for 40 years. In the end, perhaps his death was a relief for those who loved him, knowing he was no longer in pain.

The federal government has distributed posters announcing that in the past few years the number of poor in Brazil has diminished by 2.6 million. It is lamentable that a reduction of 2.6 million people, out of a total of at least 70 million poor, would justify such publicity.

Since the second half of the 20th century, global or 'World' music has become steadily more fashionable in the West. Various factors have allowed this to occur, not least the incredible advancements in communication technology. From early radio broadcasts of the 1920s to modern commodities like Apple's iPod, musical audiences have had access to increasingly more varieties of music.

Brazil was gripped by violence in the past few days. Everyone is talking about it but few are discussing its reasons. This is because we witnessed scenes we are unaccustomed to seeing. But we have become accustomed to the omission that, throughout the centuries, has been producing the current violence.
