The export growth has made Brazil stronger with regard to foreign crises. The US$ 25 billion trade balance surplus, obtained from January to September this year, should guarantee the sustainability of the Brazilian economy in case of possible international shock.

Have Brazilians stopped to reflect, as they should, over the crime figures in the 2003 Social Indicator Synthesis, recently announced by the IBGE (Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics)? Or can it be that violence has so been incorporated in our daily lives to the extent of numbing our sensitivity?

Cuiabá, Rondonópolis and Alto Araguaia - all in the midwestern state of Mato Grosso - witnessed their agricultural production increase by eight times in less than 20 years, were transformed into Brazil's greatest soy and cotton producer and count on the export of these agricultural commodities as the bases of their economy.

Rita Lee has been around for more than 30 years. Her first appearance was when her band, Os Mutantes, backed Gilberto Gil at the 1967 International Music Festival in Brazil when the latter performed "Domingo No Parque" (A Sunday at The Park), a performance that is remembered mostly for its controversy.

Since Brazilians enacted their democratic Constitution, in 1988, the law of their country has in theory prohibited all forms of censorship to freedom of the press. However, the situation in Brazil provides an extraordinary illustration of how 'law' in practice may be completely different from law in theory. Regardless of its legal protection, reality shows that freedom of the press has not been fully protected in Brazil.
