It eats little and gains weight quickly, it has large breasts and legs, is resistant to diseases, has a strong heart, lungs and skeleton, develops well in a rustic environment and dies only in the moment of slaughtering. On top of it all, when it goes to the pot, it is tasty. This is model of chicken that Brazilian aviculture is working to have in their poultry farms and to then reach the consumers' tables.

The explosion of violence that hit São Paulo in May makes up in varying degrees the normal day-to-day life in Brazilian cities. It shows that we are sitting on a time-bomb, not one that is ready to explode, but one that is already exploding, and growing more powerful with passing day. It seems too little to say that the problem is due to lack of public policy in the area of safety, or even that it is a lack of resources.

The streets off Praça Viva Gente were blanketed with grayish-green igneous rock. Well manicured trees, anchored to painted wooden stakes in the ground, sat at regular intervals to the roadside. Small cube shaped houses, colored in a variety of pastels, lined the breadth of the avenue, falling to the same measured symmetry of everything in the place.

The project for Integration of South American Regional Infrastructure (IIRSA, by its initials in Spanish), is swiftly but silently moving forward. IIRSA is the most ambitious and encompassing plan to integrate the region for international trade.

Watching two old men playing chess in a park would have been more exciting than watching Brazil's performance in the opening round of the World Cup. A squad made up of some of the world's top players struggled against the likes of Croatia, Australia and Japan. The feeling at the end of two of the games - Croatia and Australia - was relief that defeat had been avoided rather than a victory gained.
