It has just been created, in Brasília, a new NGO, called Friends of Pluto Association (SAP, Sociedade Amigos de Plutão), whose main goal it to protest the decision of the International Astronomical Union that downgraded the solar system's ninth planet to the condition of dwarf planet. All because, last week, gathered in Prague, 2.500 astronomers took this decision. Now, there are only eight planets left: Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune.

GDP growth is a bit of an obsession in Brazil. You can't attend a seminar or presentation without GDP growth grabbing the center of attention and the same old arguments and comments being made. Everyone agrees that the country needs to grow if it is to increase its wealth and bring an end to the social inequality, which is a sad hallmark of what is otherwise one of the world's most convivial countries.

As a Brazilian geographer, I have been seeking ways for the international community in general and Brazil in particular, to help in resolving the political stalemate in the Middle East. Having studied the territories currently held by Israel and the Palestinian Authority, I have come to the conclusion that the region's natural resources are insufficient for properly sustaining its ever-growing population.

Incumbent President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva is campaigning for a second term in Brazil's October 1st presidential election - a victory he does not deserve. This comes amidst mounds of political rubble, caused by the almost daily political scandals uncovered in the past few months, along with the barely containable outbreaks of violence in São Paulo.
