I disagree with you. Anti-Americanism is rampant in Brazil. I have read false anti-American views in both in Portuguese language and English language sources. Now, as far as our current leader, I have read that 60% is anti-Bush, which is the lowest approval rating in the world.

Most are americans, but one of the most vicious haters is ch.c, he is from Switzerland. The quantity of lies and irrationality is incredible. I think, for the sake of the quality of the site, the forums should be moderated.

This site is more about the US soul-search, with references to Nam and racism in Brazil, than just about Brazil.

It's difficult for an American black to see that black people in Brazil do not want to be black. It's equally difficult for an American white to see that white people in Brazil do not want to be white. Brazilians would rather be happy, exactly by ignoring those same division lines that US americans want to value -- with divisive inventions like Kwanza, "blacks buy from blacks", and "ethnic values" (read: segregation).

Much of what is said about Brazil is unfair; and much of what is said about the USA is also unfair.

The tradition of freedom of the press in the states is much older and more firmly defended than in most South American countries.

Ric, you have demonstrated an enourmous difficulty in understanding what the author is saying. He is not advocating censorship or control of the messages, he is simply point some obvious flaws in this website. The messages here, in its vast majority, are americans and they demonstrate a profound ignorance about what happens in Brazil. Either that or simply an irrational hate for everything related to Brazil and brazilians.

The problem is not the ignorance by itself, but these messages are portrayed in this site as "true" for anybody in the rest of the world to see. All these false claims and hatred for anybody else in the world see, and that have a snowball effect of promoting prejudice against Brazil.

I think it's unbelievable anybody to claim that "anti-americanism" is rampant. The US is not the target of any of these articles, when this pops up is simply as a matter of showing the americans the realities of their own country before they speak about ours. A simple defense against stupidity.

I have some news for you...those numbers about Bush are the same as in the US. Approval ratings are in the mid 30's. Things like violence or if you will be targetted for any reason (money, race, religion, etc) are things everybody should ask themselves before leaving to another country. I am from the EU but have lived in the USA for years...and it's s**t!!! I have never met a more disgusting uneducated people in my life. Brazilian Charged in NYC With $11M Theft

NEW YORK (AP) -- A prominent Brazilian congressman has been charged in New York with stealing $11.6 million from a public works project in his country, then transferring it to a Manhattan bank, according to an indictment announced Thursday.

Paulo Maluf, who is also the former mayor and governor of the city and state of Sao Paulo, stole the money through an overbilling and kickback scheme, New York prosecutors said. Four other Brazilians also are charged.

After the money arrived in New York, it was moved to offshore locales, including the Isle of Jersey, in the Channel Islands, off the coast of England, prosecutors allege. Authorities there found and froze $26 million of the stolen money, Manhattan District Attorney Robert Morgenthau said.

Morgenthau said he had jurisdiction because the scheme used a New York bank, the Safra National Bank.

"We don't want to become a haven for foreign criminals," Morgenthau said. "We're not going to be Grand Cayman on the Hudson."

An indictment charges Maluf, 75, with 17 counts, including conspiracy and criminal possession of stolen property.

Maluf is still in Brazil, and the U.S. does not have an extradition treaty with Brazil for Brazilian citizens, Morgenthau said.

"Paulo Maluf does not have, and never had, a bank account in New York," his spokesman, Adilson Laranjeira, said in a news release. "All the false accusations made against Paulo Maluf were never proven and are the fruit of political persecution."

Maluf, who was elected to the Brazilian congress in October, is a perennial presidential candidate, with a rep**ation as a politician who gets things done.

But his career has been plagued with corruption allegations. He was imprisoned briefly in Brazil in 2005 on charges of money laundering, coercing witnesses and obstructing justice.

It is quite funny. A brazilian politician steals money in brazil and through international banking will be prosecuted and found guilty in the United States long before he ever gets convicted and/or goes to jail(for more than 39 days) in brazil.

The results of the inquiry into the tragic Legacy/Gol crash supporting the conclusion that the American pilots were responsible- was released a day AFTER the pilots were released and sent back to the US. Presumably there will be a trial. Right.

Why would the pilots be released if it seemed clear to authorities the pilots were guilty? Pure speculation, but not hard to figure out:

Brazilian authorities released them before release of the report because it seemed unlikely the pilots would be found guilty- without implicating Brazilian air traffic control, the Air Force, Gol, the Brazilian Legacy builder- any or all of the above.

Prediction: There may be a face saving hearing. There will NOT be a trial. Unless of course a deal has been struck to convict them in absentia in return for releasing them now.

You don't need a crystal ball to figure this one out. Pilots (not just American pilots) are expendable. Air Force generals, air traffic control systems, airlines, airplane manufacturers, and of course national pride- are NOT.

He will never come to realize that though this is a great country, not everyplace else is all bad and there are other people who feel just as patriotice about their own nations as he believes he does his. Lastly you have the Brasilian with the inferiority complex. He sees the problems in his own country but, in an effort to make himself and his country look better will constantly blame every evil that has befallen mankind on the Americans. Mr. President, Mr. Secretary General, distinguished colleagues, I would like to begin by expressing my thanks for the special effort that each of you made to be here today.

This is important day for us all as we review the situation with respect to Iraq and its disarmament obligations under U.N. Security Council Resolution 1441.

Last November 8, this council passed Resolution 1441 by a unanimous vote. The purpose of that resolution was to disarm Iraq of its weapons of mass destruction. Iraq had already been found guilty of material breach of its obligations, stretching back over 16 previous resolutions and 12 years.

Resolution 1441 was not dealing with an innocent party, but a regime this council has repeatedly convicted over the years. Resolution 1441 gave Iraq one last chance, one last chance to come into compliance or to face serious consequences. No council member present in voting on that day had any illusions about the nature and intent of the resolution or what serious consequences meant if Iraq did not comply.

And to assist in its disarmament, we called on Iraq to cooperate with returning inspectors from UNMOVIC and IAEA.

We laid down tough standards for Iraq to meet to allow the inspectors to do their job.

This council placed the burden on Iraq to comply and disarm and not on the inspectors to find that which Iraq has gone out of its way to conceal for so long. Inspectors are inspectors; they are not detectives.

I asked for this session today for two purposes: First, to support the core assessments made by Dr. Blix and Dr. ElBaradei. As Dr. Blix reported to this council on January 27th, "Iraq appears not to have come to a genuine acceptance, not even today, of the disarmament which was demanded of it."

And as Dr. ElBaradei reported, Iraq's declaration of December 7, "did not provide any new information relevant to certain questions that have been outstanding since 1998."

My second purpose today is to provide you with additional information, to share with you what the United States knows about Iraq's weapons of mass destruction as well as Iraq's involvement in terrorism, which is also the subject of Resolution 1441 and other earlier resolutions.

I might add at this point that we are providing all relevant information we can to the inspection teams for them to do their work.

The material I will present to you comes from a variety of sources. Some are U.S. sources. And some are those of other countries. Some of the sources are technical, such as intercepted telephone conversations and photos taken by satellites. Other sources are people who have risked their lives to let the world know what Saddam Hussein is really up to.

I cannot tell you everything that we know. But what I can share with you, when combined with what all of us have learned over the years, is deeply troubling.

What you will see is an accumulation of facts and disturbing patterns of behavior. The facts on Iraq's behavior demonstrate that Saddam Hussein and his regime have made no effort -- no effort -- to disarm as required by the international community.

Indeed, the facts and Iraq's behavior show that Saddam Hussein and his regime are concealing their efforts to produce more weapons of mass destruction.
