By all means save the planet. Its Brazil's forest if it wants to chop it down and make a golf course out of it it is its perrogative. If it wants to sell every stick of timber it is its perrogative. I think there is more money to be made in ecco tourism, and that golf is essentially immoral, it is Brazils right to completely sell every tree there and turn Brazil into a giant cattle farm. Brazil is about beauty, not rape. I dont think Brazil has any interest in raping the Amazon only because it is such a beautiful asset as Brazilian as Samba, black beans and rice. Fear sells and National Geographic is a business. And BTY I dont think man has anything to do with global warming, it is a natural cycle millions of years old. Excellent article. Yes, we should all be aware that we can all be part of keeping our planet presenteable for the upcoming generations. And, we should respect the borders. And although I agree that fear sells and there is a lot of that going on, keeping what is left of the world's forests is not part of the fear market. Yes, global average temperature is climbing. Yes, CO2 is up 33% in the air, the highest it is supposed to have been -- ever. However, the role of man-made CO2 in global warming has been overblown. Nature is a system in equilibrium and there are balancing feedbacks that are just beginning to be studied, such as the Iris Theory. Further, the air in the southern hemisphere mixes very little with the air in the northern hemisphere. The Amazon region is not the world's lungs. Lots of hype, but who would expect the media (including NG), to clarify anything anyway? What NG wants is hype, controversy, advocacy journalism. There is precious little free press today.

Good think you brought CFCs up. You don't hear much about it anymore. In the 90's there was a big media push around CFCs (not unlike today with CO2). One of the major culprit was suposedly freon gas. So there was a big psh to outlaw it. LAw was passed, rules enforced. People went to jail, cars and home appliances had price increases.
And...coincidence of coincidences, the patent on reon was about to expire. That meant it was about to become public domain and anybody would be able to produce it reducing it's cost. That meant Dupont Corporation, who held the patent, was about to lose one of it' largest cash cows. Then miracle of miracles, Dupont was ready to save us all with a new gas , r34, that they had already and thankfully developed to replace freon. Thank goodness (and enviromental wackos like yourself) we could keep our ACs and Dupont had another few decades of patented gas sales to infalte it's revenues. Whew!!!... that was close.

It was a scientific theory; there was an intense debate about what to do; there were your classic deniers claiming that eliminating or phasing out CFCs would mean an end to certain economies, and losses in jobs; The Montreal Protocol PROVED that an international agreement could be achieved and worked; since then, new technologies have emerged, creating MORE jobs (greenfreeze), and holes in the Ozone layer are getting much smaller, hence, there is no need to really rabbit on about it now, is there?

I myself find it amazing that a lot of people act as if humankind is so technologically advanced that we could solve such a global weather problem. How is it that we now assume it is in our power that we might manipulate Mother Nature. This is all just chasing after the wind. In likelihood if we reorganized the industrial world before we could see the benefits we would be annihilated by a meteor. The Amazon forest is the earth's lungs, it should be internationalized as the artic continent and run by a UN agency. Since a very personal and painful falling out with Greenpeace in 1986 Moore has put his considerable campaigning energies into undermining environmentalists, especially his former friends and colleagues. has no academic status and his role in such programmes is to promote his own weather prediction business. He has steadfastly refused to ever subject his climatological theories to any form of external review or scrutiny.

Richard Lindzen.
As a Professor of Meteorology at the credible Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Lindzen is by far the most rep**able academic among the US climate deniers and, for this reason, he is heavily cited by sympathetic journalists such as Melanie Phillips and Michael Crichton. His arguments though are identical to the other deniers – for example an article in the Wall Street Journal (June 11 2001) he claims that “there is no consensus, unanimous or otherwise, about long-term climate trends or what causes them”.
He is strongly associated with the other people on the programme though co-authored reports, articles, conference appearances and co-signed statements.

Tim Ball
was captioned as the University of Winnipeg. In fact he left in 1996 since when he has run political campaigns through two organisations he helped found: the Natural Resources Stewardship Project and the Friends of Science which, according to their websites aim to run “a proactive grassroots campaign to counter the Kyoto Protocol”; and “encourage and assist the Canadian Federal Government to re-evaluate the Kyoto Protocol”. "Two eminent British scientists who questioned the accuracy of a Channel 4 programme that claimed global warming was an unfounded conspiracy theory have received an expletive-filled tirade from the programme maker.

In an e-mail exchange leaked to The Times, Martin Durkin, the executive producer of The Great Global Warming Swindle, responded to the concerns of Dr Armand Leroi, from Imperial College, and Simon Singh, the respected scientific author, by telling them to “go and f*** yourself”.

The tirade has caused Dr Leroi to withdraw his cooperation from another Channel 4 project with Mr Durkin on race, The Times has learnt.

The programme, broadcast by Channel 4 last Thursday, featured a number of scientists who disputed the consensus on the causes of global warming.

Dr Leroi was particularly concerned about a segment that featured a correlation between solar activity and global temperatures, which was based on a 1991 paper in the journal Science by Eigil Friis-Chris-tensen. That way we could figure out what went wrong/ right and how do things better/ even better in the future.” Mr Durkin replied nine minutes later: “The BBC is now a force for bigotry and intolerance . . . Last night Dr Leroi said that he was amazed at the rudeness of Mr Durkin’s reply.

“It was rather a shocking response,” Dr Leroi said. “It was my intention to make a film with Martin Durkin and [the production company] Wag, but that is something I am seriously reconsidering now. I am no climate scientist, but I was very concerned at the way that flaws in these data were brushed over.”

He said that the global warming film had glossed over flaws in data that it used to make its case, and that it was critical that a documentary about a subject as controversial as race and biology did not make similar mistakes.

“As the subject of our proposed film was race, it is such a sensitive topic that it requires great care and great balance. That he has shown so little respect for scientific consensus and such little nuance is a cause for great concern. I cannot imagine it will go ahead now.”

The film would have addressed Dr Leroi’s thesis that race is a biologically meaning-ful and medically valuable concept, a view that is highly controversial among scientists.

Last night Mr Durkin apologised for his langauge. “As far as I was concerned these were private e-mails. They arrived when I was quite tired having just finished the programme in time for transmission,” he said.

“Needless, to say, I regret the use of intemperate language. It is so unlike me. I am very eager to have all the science properly debated with scientists qualified in the right areas and have asked Channel 4 if they will stage a live debate on this subject.”

Also the correlating data on sun spot activity and global temperature I found fascinating (though without telescopes how were such observations made?).
I was at the Sun research observatory on Haleakula some time ago and learned of certain solar cycles and the consequential effect on such things as El Nina El Pinta and El Sant Maria, but seriously folks, Greenland was warmer, ice caps melt and refreeze, temperatures rise and temperatures fall and it seems more likely in our feeling of impotence that to believe that we can in anyway alter the temperature of Earth is tantamount to meglomania. Now we did a great job of improving the smog conditions in L.A., I remember growing up there when you could see the snow on the San Gabriel Mountains and from the Griffith Observatory the island of Catalina. Like I said there was NEVER an international ban on DDT for 3rd world countries to be used for malaria. DDT use was EXEMPT from the 1972 ban for malaria, and still is. But scientists know that DDT is a short term fix because the eradication of malaria comes mainly through education and infrastructure. If these are not in place you can spray all you like and the only thing you’ll end up doing is poisoning the area while creating a new generation of DDT resistant mossies. DDT is a carcinogen, people.

Greenland was indeed warmer at one time, but what did the coast of Brazil look like at that same time? How about Florida? Bangladesh? I’m not quite sure, but what I can tell you is that there were not 90 million Brazilians living along this 8000km stretch of coast, I could tell you too that Florida was in no way populated like it is today. This is where people fumble. It’s like seeing a meteorite hurtling towards the planet, and instead of everyone getting together to see what can be done, there is a group of idiotarians shrugging their shoulders saying: “Well, the planet’s been hit before; it’s quite natural”.

Now, I’m not equating the possible effects of climate change with a meteorite strike. The world, or should I say humanity, will not end with a warmer climate. That’s a given. So we’re in for a process of adaptation. And this is where the issue gets complicated. If the sea level rises (as many studies point to), where do the people of the Marshall and Maldives Islands go? Environmental refugees will be a fairly significant term tossed about in 2040.

Studies from INPE are already forecasting the demise of much of the Amazon by 2050 where tropical forest will be replaced by savanna. That will have an affect on over 20 million Brazilians. What do they do? And on and on and on. The only reoccurring theme here is that the poorer a nation, or the poorer a population within a nation the harder it will be for them to adapt. Sir Nicholas Stern (don´t be lazy and look him up) predicts it’s going to cost the planet 20% of the global GDP to adapt, 1% to ameliorate. Things that make you go hmmmm.

In Aftermath of Volcanic Eruption, Photosynthesis Waxes, Carbon Dioxide Wanes

In June 1991, when Mt. Pinatubo in the Philippines spewed tons of volcanic ash and gases into the atmosphere, it just so happened that halfway around the world scientists were beginning to obtain good data from carbon dioxide monitors high above the tree canopy in Harvard Forest, outside Boston, Mass. Now, more than a decade later, the measurements taken during the years following the eruption are providing new insight into how atmospheric aerosols affect photosynthesis. The findings, published today in the journal Science, are forcing scientists to rethink the factors that influence the cycling of carbon through the environment, particularly carbon dioxide, a major player in global warming.
Within three weeks of the Mt. Pinatubo eruption, the largest volcanic blast of the century, a band of sulfur aerosol had encircled the globe. By early 1992, the volcanic gases and aerosols had diffused through the stratosphere, veiling the earth. During that time, global carbon dioxide levels fell more sharply than any other decline on record. Some scientists suggested that global cooling caused ecosystem respiration to drop, lowering the amount of carbon dioxide emitted into the atmosphere. But Lianhong Gu of Oak Ridge National Laboratory, lead author of the Science report, didn't think that could be the only explanation.
Gu knew that crop scientists had discovered that plants grow best in diffuse light. When sunlight is too intense, some leaves fall into shadow, unable to photosynthesize, while others bask in the direct beams but will reach a photosynthetic saturation point. Moderate cloud cover and aerosols block direct beams, but allow light to bounce back and forth off water vapor and other molecules, creating a "softer" light that reaches leaves that would otherwise be shaded. As a result, the plants photosynthesize more, using up carbon dioxide in the process. Gu and his collaborators determined that the same principles apply to forest canopies. The Harvard Forest data show that carbon dioxide levels dropped for two years following the eruption at Mt. Pinatubo—findings that the scientists suggest represent a worldwide phenomenon given that the eruption had a global atmospheric effect. "Up until now we hadn't linked aerosols and clouds with carbon studies," Gu says. "In order to understand atmospheric carbon dioxide concentrations, which affect climate, we have to look at how aerosols and clouds affect the global carbon cycle."

I have just spent the lion’s share of my life studying environmental sciences and issues. I have an interest in the natural world and spend my time working in this milieu. I’m far from an intellect, have never considered myself as such, and imagine anyone who really was and is a serious “academic” wouldn’t be wasting time on this silly site discussing murder rates in Rio and which country is more racist: the US or Brasil.

But ID is not only a pseudoscience as most scientists will overwhelmingly agree; it’s a practical joke played upon the weakest minds in society. ID is little more than sheep’s clothing for that obnoxious wolf called religion. Spit Spit. It has no room in science, as most courts are agreeing.

But just for s**ts and giggles, in hindsight, I wish intelligent design were part of the curriculum when I was at school. I could have blown through my science classes fried on mushrooms. If I was stumped over a complicated question or formula, a simple "God did it", would have gotten me an A, instead of all that unneccessary studying. Imagine the possibilities.

Brazil is the eighth largest economy in the world, the Ministry of Finance said in a study based on the revised figures of Brazil's 2000-2005 Gross Domestic Product (GDP).
The revision, carried out by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE), showed a rise of 10.9 percent from the previous figures, which brings Brazil's GDP closer to France's on the World Bank list.
Brazil's GDP reached 1.80 trillion U.S. dollars in 2005, according to the study, which was based on new figures released on Wednesday, and on a technique that considered the population's purchasing power parity (PPP) as reference.
The technique, used by the World Bank to rank countries according to their GDPs, takes into consideration other factors rather than exchange rates, habits, prices and demands.
According to World Bank statistics, which has not been revised, Brazil's GDP was the ninth highest in the world estimated at 1.62 trillion U.S. dollars, following Italy, whose GDP amounts to 1.66 trillion U.S. dollars.

There are two excellent books anyone interested in the Amazon should read. The first was just released. It is called "The Last Forest" and it is written by Mark London and Brian Kelly. It provides an excellent account of soybean expansion and destruction in the region. The other is "The Brazilian Amazon Rainforest" by Luiz C. Barbosa. It describes in a wonderful style the ecopolitics related to the region connecting it to the onset of Brazilian democracy and globalization. These books show the positive steps Brazil has taken to protect the forest as well as the difficulties in stopping deforestation. Brazil has passed some important legislation to protect Amazonia. The problem is one of enforcement, which associated with corruption and lack of money. IBAMA has very few staff to monitor an area bigger than half the continental US.

Brazil shuts down U.S. company's port on Amazon River, demands environmental assessment

SAO PAULO, Brazil -- Authorities shut down an important deep-water Amazon River port owned by Cargill Inc. on Saturday, saying the huge U.S. agribusiness firm failed to provide an environmental impact statement required by law.

The move by federal police and environmental agents to close Cargill's controversial soy export terminal was a major victory for environmentalists in Santarem, a sleepy jungle city about 1,250 miles northwest of Sao Paulo. It came after a late Friday ruling by Judge Souza Prudente, police and the Agencia Estado news service said.

''It was peaceful,'' federal police agent Cesar Dessimoni said of the shutdown. ''They can appeal the ruling, but no one resisted.''

Dessimoni said Minnetonka, Minn.-based Cargill had prepared an environmental assessment that did not meet federal standards.

''They'll have to do it correctly, as the law demands,'' he said by telephone from Santarem.

''Since that time the federal prosecutor has said we should have done another kind of environmental assessment and that is the issue before the courts.''

No ships were being loaded or waiting to load when the port was closed, Johnson said.

Cargill opened the $20 million port in Santarem three years ago to cash in on the rising global demand for soybeans, Brazil's most lucrative agricultural export.

The port's location puts it in a key spot if Brazil's government follows through on promises to pave a muddy jungle road, turning it into a modern two-lane toll highway stretching 1,100 miles from Brazil's top growing soy state of Mato Grosso to Cargill's deep-water port.

Johnson said Cargill has not taken a position on the road paving project and that the port can still be profitable without the road.

But grain analysts say paving the road would benefit soy exporters and Cargill by drastically cutting the cost of shipping soy abroad because many farmers could avoid sending their beans on trucks to Atlantic Ocean ports much farther away. President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva pledged the paving would start soon during his successful campaign for re-election last fall.

Cargill became a target for residents, activists and federal prosecutors who called the port illegal and tried to shut it down. But the port also has strong support from many in Santarem, who see it as a key element for economic development to rid the region of grinding poverty.

The rain forest, as big as Western Europe, lost 6,450 square miles to deforestation between 2005 and 2006, a decrease of 11 percent from the year before, Brazil's Environment Ministry says.

Environmentalists say deforestation has slowed largely because the price of soybeans has declined on the international market and Brazil's currency has strengthened against the dollar, making it much less profitable for now to cut down the rain forest to plant grain.

The rain forest covers 60 percent of Brazil. Experts say as much as 20 percent of its 1.6 million square miles has already been destroyed by development, logging and farming.

Would you say we hate the United States and the Americans? No!

As a matter of fact I know that a LOT of brazilians hate americans, and it's nearly 100% of the time a hate without basis, or stemming from a situation where a brazilian suffered justifiable consequences from actions he took, or didn't take. But naturally he gets pissed, because he's not used to enforcement of the law and/or rules.

I'm an american living in the northeast of brazil for nearly a decade, I know, I was recently assaulted in a shopping mall while with two brazilian friends simply having a conversation with ourselves and someone nearby didn't like the fact that I was an american and talking about problems in brazil, as were my brazilian friends, they were actually being much harsher than I was, but because I'm an american, I was verbally assualted, to the point where security had to come and take the man away.

Now let's take a look at something here. What basis would brazilians have to hate americans?? Because the U.S. gov't. supported a military takeover of brazil in the 1960's?? Most of you that post on this site weren't born when this took place, and most certainly not these idiotic, raving, college student idiots here in brazil frothing and wearing their Osama t-shirts have no f**king clue about what happened, they've heard stories from their families, studied it in school, but that's about it. And brazilians, as well as all peoples, have to take responsibility for themselves, but that is a huge issue here in brazil. It's as if it's "taboo" to be responsible, admit errors, apologize, and correct them. Yes, the U.S. supported the military takeover, it did NOT design it, did NOT plan it, did NOT inititate it. It was a brazilian plan, 100%, that started being planned as early as 1956 by brazilian generals and the brazilian elite at the time.

Other than that, what has the U.S. done to brazil for brazilians to hate it?? Be their #1 importer? Be their #1 destination of going to live outside of brazil, legally and illegally? Approve loans that were REQUESTED through the IMF, time after time, even when we've seen, time after time, hundreds of millions of dollars of these loans ending up in Swiss bank accounts? Sending the army corp. of engineers to train and help build infrastructures throughout hundreds of brazilian cities back in the 1970's? GIVING money to brazil?? That's right, the U.S. GIVES money to brazil, check out USAID. Allows brazil to export numerous of its products to the U.S. WITHOUT import tax!?

I know it's not much, but it's certainly not like the U.S. has a "plan" against brazil or brazilians. Brazil doesn't have americans coming to it by the millions, illegally, taking jobs away from brazilians, american children, illegal mind you, taking chairs in brazilian schools away from brazilian children. Americans, illegal in brazil, using social services to the tune of billions of dollars per year. Instead what do you have, you have americans, as well as europeans and other people from all over the globe, that come to brazil, for tourism, they're spending their money, then they go home. Or, you have them coming to brazil to invest, only to quickly discover that for some strange reason many brazilians believe that foreigners from the first world are ignorant! Everyone from the taxi cab drivers, to lawyers, to real estate agents, to business owners, to basic technicians that come to your home or business to fix your telephone or tv or air conditioner, they try to "enrolar" or steal. They think because you weren't born in brazil you must be ignorant, this is their ignorance. And this hasn't just happened to me, time and time again, over a decade, but it happens to nearly every gringo I've ever met that has spent any time whatsoever in brazil.

In my city there is a housing development of 50 homes on the beach, 30 of these homes belong to english people, I was there yesterday with a group of approximately 10 of the homeowners. Every single one, without exception, stated what I did above. Isn't it embarrassing? I know that if it was commonplace for foreigners to go to my country, the U.S., and the vast majority of the people there, from cab drivers to snowcone salesmen to those selling expensive items such as cars, homes, property, trying to financial f**k foreigners at every corner, I would be ashamed. I would certainly be able to understand why people would talk negatively about my country. I would be pissed at my countrymen as well, kind of like the brazilian friends that I have that are educated and have experienced other countries, first world countries. They know the realities and can understand why brazil has the perception it does internationally, it's well deserved.

The R$ Real is 2.06 today up 67%, Bovespa is at 45,644 and continues its assent. Economically the giant is like Pele, ironically nobody knows or cares about Pele, maybe you resent that. Maybe you resent that the U.S. doesnt give a hoot about soccer, that it is a game for 'light weights'.

You can hate our indifference, our ignorance of Brazil, but American's really have positive almost genteel concept of Brazil. It has no idea of any of its problems, and with all global suffering the masses are empathetic and sympathetic.

Americans are profit motivated, they respect Horatio Alger stories, they respect success, (economic). Brazil will rise to power from its economic slumber. And its presence not ignored. It is like the Chinese that come to Vegas and sit at the Poker table with $500,000 in chips in front of him. He is not to be ignored. Money is money. Money talks bulls**t walks.

Brazil is the 'dot com. boom' of the next ten years. Invest now, for the time is now.

There is no film from Brazil, no theater, no Cirque de Solei. There is no James Bond, there is the Amazon and Rio.

Maybe that is what you resent that you are not seen. That you are regarded as an ant when you are not. When I flew into Sao Paulo I said holy 's**t', its like f**king Chicago. It was nothing that I had imagined Brazil to be.

Where are your museums's, your aquariums, your natural history collections? Have you been to Paris? Paris is the 'sine qua non' of everything a foreign place should be, if your not Paris your nothing.

It is hard to be regarded as nothing. But it is an opinion based upon nothing. Your anti-Americanism is but based on its lack of interest in you. We are all hurt by indifference. But it is Brazil's time to demand respect. as little knowledge about the U.S. as Americans know about Brazil.

Let me explain, in most any country of the world the typical knowledgeable person can site a hand full of U.S. cities with ease and another handful with uncertainty. The U.S. has had more influence Economically, Technologically, Cinematically, etc. in the world than most other countries. In comparison the same type of American or Brazilan or anyone else, would be lucky to do the same with any other country in the world.

Those I have talked to have the surface knowledge, but know nothing below the surface. To know/understand Americans/Brazilians is to know their countries history, their accomplishments, their failures, what drives them, what is their origin etc. and finally to participate in the culture personally.

I am frequently dissapointed when talking with such Brazilians, because when I change the subject and begin to talk about Brazil's history I am astounded to find out I know more about some subjects than they do, their excuse of course is they work, work, work and have had no time to discover Brazil. I point out that Americans are similar, they work, work, work
and have little time to discover the U.S. let alone Brazil.

Finally let me say this, I am happier than my wife at the shoe store when I meet a Brazilan who is well traveled and truly knowledgeable about the U.S. and Brazil. Having a discussion with this type of person is almost like talking to myself, we share similar gripes, similar likes and dislikes about both Brazil and the U.S. Here we meet on common ground and have become alike, similar but yet still unique, all due to a well rounded knowledge on both parts.

American ignorance about geography and history is almost legendary. Everyone knows that you can't point in a map where Iraq is, and for that matter any other country. Maybe Canada and Mexico, but besides that it's to ask too much of an american.

Don't say non sense about museums, aquariums, films, circus, classical music composers, etc. We have all of that, but perhaps in the middle of nowhere where immigrants live, some small place in the northeast, you won't be able to find it.

Of course you have film, and museums and the rest but not on an International Level. Where is the Tate Museum, The Louvre, The Metropolitan Museum in N.Y., The Smithsonian in D.C., The Cairo Egyptian Museum.

I am in Rio I have been to the museum of Modern Art. It is not the Gugenheim, The Prado, The Musee de Art Modern, it was empty. BTW where is the National Aquarium, or the Museum of Natural History with its dinosaur ehibits, like the Field Museum in Chicago?

I think your view is too simplistic, but typical. Brazilians dislike the US because of the history of interventionism they have. It doesn't need to be directly against Brazil, it can be to any country. This, I would say, is the main reason. By intervening you are preventing a people from solving their own problems, therefore responsible for whatever bad that happens there, directly or indirectly.

The reason number 2 would be that americans usually portray themselves as the best in everything, owner of everything, etc. We witness such behavior here in this forum. They won't admit anything wrong in their own country, and they will always want to be the perfect example. The same childish behavior can't be found in europeans. They will praise the achievements of their countries of course, but they are often more realistic about the problems. Americans in the other hand will do anything to get things their way even if they need to defame others and lie about their own problems. One fine example of this is the description of the racial situation in the US. You lie, defame, call other people names, etc, but won't admit any problems. Europeans in the other hand tend to be very clear about what happens there.

The US has a long historical background of supporting bloody dictators and corrupt regimes in many countries, that kill their own people by the thousands, while making a speech of freedom and democracy. The general idea is that you are the greatest hypocritical bastards on the planet. Plus all the corruption your government is involved in. The US government is famous for making pressure, paying bribes and doing whatever they need to, illegally or legally, in order to some big businesses to gain contracts abroad.

The common behavior of the average american is childish to say the least. They seem to love war and promote "US über alles" but they aren't man enough to fight it, they ignore all the politics in the world and economical interdependence the US has to many other countries and also ignore the costs of a war. Most seem to fantasize they are Romans (sic), a title that would be better attributed to italians, and that they are "conquering" the world as if we were in some year BC.

Sites like these only serve to feed the illusion that you have about your own country. This is useful when your government needs to promote death (yours and of others) for the profit of a few. It's important that you are incapable of measuring the consequences and causes of it.

Who in their right mind would go to a war zone "to help"? Especially if those helping are americans? Bosta, the U.S. is a country that goes to war, we are a militarized country that uses it to enforce our policies internationally. And so far, it seems to have worked, being that the U.S. is the sole "superpower" in the world today, from a military standpoint as well as an economic standpoint. And to be honest bosta, that is a governments function, to take care of the best interest of its people.
