As a young adult in the city of Fortaleza, Brazil, I had two favorite
destinations for my times of leisure: the first was Praia de Iracema, which was
then the main nightlife district of the city, with plenty of venues for live
music, dining or simply strolling around.
Brazil and the beautiful game have been synonymous for decades now. Brazil's
people and the rest of the world have expected Brazil to play a open style of
football in which it mattered how victory was achieved - and generally Brazil
has complied.
Few people outside Brazil have heard of Antonio Carlos Magalhães who died on
July 20 at the age of 79. However, he had national recognition in Brazil and was
universally referred to simply as ACM. He was probably the most influential
politician of his generation and for over 40 years virtually ran his home state
of Bahia.
Brazilian highways are the main routes of access to all four corners of the
country. Both for passenger transport and for cargo delivery. And of the total
highway grid - over 1.7 million kilometers - just 188,000 are paved, a large
part of which in awful conditions.
It's no great assumption that there is disproportionate coverage on the
Palestinian-Israeli conflict. But how are other conflict-ridden regions of the
world affected by this? For more than 20 years, various areas of my city - Rio
de Janeiro, Brazil - have been constantly doubling from residential
neighborhoods to war zones.
