25 de Março, Brazil's Most Crowded Street, Becomes Powerful Brand PDF Print E-mail

25 de Março street in São Paulo, Brazil. Photo by Sergio Tomisaki On a Tuesday, a regular day, it is virtually impossible to walk along 25 de Março (25th of March) and its neighboring streets. Pedestrians are the ones who run over cars, and not the other way around, such is the amount of people. Street vendors compete for the loudest screams, and shopkeepers put all of their employees on the streets to attract people.

"There is garbage everywhere ".... !!!!!!
written by ch.c., September 20, 2007
- Normal....this is Brazil !

"Areas, due to crowding, are prone to theft and robbery"

Normal.... this is Brazil ! Thieves are not in this area only ....in Brazil, but everywhere !

""We can establish new commercial centers named '25th of March' in other regions of Brazil," he believes. That is what wonders are like. They must honor their title."

But it is alreadyx so everywhere in Brazil, full of thieves...and garbage ! No need for more !

Ohhhhh and curiously, not a word, that many products sold there, are pirated goods that have been produced in the country or imported through (IL)legal smuggling !!!!!!

This is a great "feel good" story but is clearly not addressing several key issues. Having spent quite a bit of time in 25 de Março and Brás working and observing, I was left with three overwhelming impressions regarding these commercial districts:

1. The vast majority of everything sold in the 25 de Março area is made in China.

2. An enormous amount of counterfit products are available for purchase there. They too are typically made in China.

3. The area contributes greatly to the destruction of the Brazilian manufacturing sector because there is so much illegal commerce going on.

These Chinese imports are sold directly to consumers, but there is also a massive wholesale business going on in Brás, 25 de Março, and even Bom Retiro in which middlemen sell to lojistas all over Brazil. Many of the Chinese products are counterfit, or have not entered the country legally. While some may argue this benefits the consumer, due to the fact that so many of the goods are counterfeit they are often dangerous in that they may pose health risks....see Chinese using lead-based paints in toys.

A close friend of mine who owned the biggest leather watch-band factory in Brazil and employed more than 200 brazilian workers, based in Brás, recently went bankrupt specifically due to the fact that imported Chinese products sold in these types of markets. Not only did these Chinese/Brazilian competitors they beat him on price, they actually imported numerous containers illegally, and the "mafia" behind the Chinese imports stole numerous truckloads of his products.

The comments of Michael William are quite interesting.Worth paying attention,as I share his opinion about the Chinese made junk, sold all over the world, including the Wall Mart stores in the good ole U.S.of A.

Michael, thanks for reminding us about Paraguay. Another country that has become a retail outlet for Chinese made goods.

Ch.c will probably be very happy to know that his beloved Rolex watches are also being counterfeited in Paraguay smilies/grin.gif
If Ch.c is happy, so should we be

Chinese junk is an old but ingenious design.

Ric, you almost out smarted me with this statement. I had to close my eyes, meditate about what I have read about "Han Dynasty",remember about the books on China written by the Englishmen, etc; Bingo, I managed to decode the hidden meaning in your phrase smilies/cheesy.gif

Ingenious Design.....
written by Michael William, September 21, 2007
Ric, 99% of Chinese products are not designed by the Chinese. They are designed elsewhere. China provides cheap manufacturing - that's it. In fact, a large portion of the Chinese-made products sold in 25 de Marco, Bras, Bom Retiro and elsewhere are actually rip-offs of Japanese, European, American, and Brazilian products.

I Believe It

And as someone noted, now that Sponge Bob is on TV in China, workers can figure out what it is that they have been manufacturing for several years.

That you knew instintively that the Chinese Junk dates back to the Han. Whether the word "junk" is a corruption of "junco" or an Asian word, I don´t know.

Ric, I dont want to shoot off my big mouth.I think that "junk" is a Latin word (as you brillinantly translated into the "Brazilian Portuguese" as "Junco"). Of course Vasco de Gama would dispute our claim, but never mind-He is long gone (May his sould R.I.P).

Of course, the Germans may claim that this word is a corruption of the word "Junke". Never mind the Germans (nor the Swiss). We dont mind them and they dont matter.

In a nutshell, the ORIGINAL Chinese JUNK was a well designed one. My congrats to you for defending the ancient Chinese JUNK and rejecting their modern Junks (sold in Wall Mart).

btw, didnt the Chinese invent the gun powder?

The Mattel story took a twist this week as they ha dto kow tow to the Chinese trade minsitry for using the lead recall to distract attention rom the bigger call because of a dangerous design fault.

If not for the attention brought by the lead paint, would the dangerous design fault have come to light? Would Mattel have ignored it?

Counterfeiting has cost lives in China including the criminals who sold fake baby formula, babies were literally starving to death while being fed.

For clothing is the attention on China misplaced? if people did not knowingly choose to buy fake goods, there would be no manufacturing.

Today we have free alternatives to Microsoft Windows and Office, but I wonder how Brazil could have reached todays level of computer use without pirate software.
