Will Brazil's Sarney Fall on His Sword? PDF Print E-mail
2009 - July 2009
Written by John Fitzpatrick

Senator José Sarney from Brazil The Senate chairman, José Sarney, is following in the tradition of his predecessors and abusing the power entrusted by his office to enrich himself and his relatives. As this is how he has been operating in half a century of political life we should not be surprised, but perhaps we could expect higher standards from a man who was President of the Republic for five years and has been Senate chairman on two previous occasions.

FALL ON HIS SOWARD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
written by Forrest Allen Brown, July 29, 2009
It should be unshehed and used to chop off his bank account first .
then cut off his familys land and companys holdings .

remove him from office and all his family from government post he had a way of puting them in office .

then make him say i am a sorry son of a bi-ch but you kept electing me even when you knew i was a theif , womanszer , drunk .only in for the money and power .

of course you could do that in any country in the world to any politican and it would be true.

AGAIN I SAY DONT RELECT ANY ONE LET THEM ONLY HAVE 2 TERMS IN THE HOUSE AND GO HOME .
BUT THEY HAVE TO BE ON THE SAME MEDICAL , RETIRMENT , HEALTH CARE AS THE REST OF THE PEOPLE HE WAS ELECTID TO REPRESENT .
To Forrest...

Be pretty sure that the other Dynasties, such as the Amaral, ACM...etc etc will strongly disagree with your proposals !

No one is corrupt in Brazil...as we all know !
Not even the proven corrupts. They always get impunity whatever guilty they are.
Just look at the proven guilty people at the vote byuing scandal.
They were pardoned, in a secret vote, by the other senators just as corrupted as the ones they pardoned.

So disgusting...that most investigators...RESIGNED !
Ohhhh I am quite sure they were hired elsewhere and with a much much better salary...provided they keep quiet...and dont disclose everything they found !

Corruption always spread like an endemic virus !
EVERYWHERE AND AT ALL LEVELS OF A SOCIETY.
That is why brazilians citizens elect, re-elect, re-re-elect the same crooks for decades.
Because they too hope/expect/dream of becoming a direct member of these gangsters and at the same time a direct beneficiary...one way or the other.

Would you mind stop interfering in the "domestic politics" of our country, thus maintaining the infamous Swiss Neutrality of yours?

Jose Sarney will survive, but...
written by Ricardo C. Amaral, July 30, 2009

I am sure that Former president will survive all these vicious political attacks.

This is dirty politics at its worse.

I have been talking with my relatives and friends in Brazil, and the general reaction is: nobody cares about any of these allegations against former president Sarney and his family.

The general consensus is that all the politicians have been playing that same game all the time. It is nothing knew, and most of the people could care less other than people find entertaining all this news on television - just like another Brazilian soap opera, and nothing else.

The big loser on all of this is the Brazilian Congress including the senate and the Camara dos Dep**ados - since they lose their public credit even more than before.

All this affair is a major black eye for the Brazilian Congress.

.

Keep up the good work John,

It is so important what John F does, so much of what is written only gets seen or written about in Portuguese, and his analysis and writing is invaluable to the general population. well done.

I wholeheartedly agree with you for different reasons. A bunch of Gringos writing articles ain't going to alter the fact that our former President is going to survive this crisis and come out of it smelling real good.

It is so important what John F does, so much of what is written only gets seen or written about in Portuguese, and his analysis and writing is invaluable to the general population.

Please give some credit to Edison DeSouza too for writing about this much before John F came out with his article.
Of course he will, this is Brazil.

"I am sure that Former president will survive all these vicious political attacks."

Of course Sarney will survive, if criminals like Maluf, Amazoninho, Barbalho, Direceu et.al survive and never do time, Sarney will have it easy, and will not only survive but eventually he'll prosper more politically. He's just annoyed right now that he's not being looked at like a king. His feelings are hurt. Poor baby.

Brazil is a nation of political thieves and pimps, and they honor their own. Nothing will come of this. And Brazilians will forget about this in 4....3....2.... "hey where's the churrasco?"

"nobody cares about any of these allegations against former president Sarney and his family. "

Ricardo, what I get from your posts is that your family is basically a dynasty in Brazil and they mingle in isolated, VERY ISOLATED, circles. Because of that they really have no grip on reality and don't know what the masses think. Of course they will support Sarney, they all play by the same rules. If he falls, they could be next. It is in their best interest to undermine and sidetrack these scandals- it's self preservation.

To your illusion about no one caring, actually MOST DO (those outside of 50 million dollar mansions and gated communities and those not in the hills earning 2 dollars a day) or at least feign indignation. But, and here's the important part, everyone knows this will go nowhere. This IS Brazil, and precedent has been set and repeated historically to what will happen. Brazilians, for the most part, know they are impotent to challenge the corrupt political elite of this nation and so concern over this case will inevitably atrophy. Brazilians are notoriously and easily sidetracked (like ferrets on crystal meth)and something else will pop up, kidnap their outrage and indignation, and Sarney will slink off unscathed like all thieves and pimps before him.

We've seen this play before.

Great article John

As usual, easily read, entertaining as all hell and informative. I forgot what a godsend your articles are on this site.

"Any chance of him admitting that he was wrong and apologizing to the population can be excluded."

I've always argued that the phrase "Ordem e Progresso" on the Brazilian flag should be changed to "Não fui eu".
Well said all round

Well said Joao, Edison De Souza also deserves credit.
The more the merrier.
