When Brazil became rich through the exportation of sugar, there was no way of debating the destiny of the resources it brought. We were a mere colony, and the idea of economic progress had not yet been created. When the gold prospecting began, Brazil, likewise, was still a slave-ocrative colony, and the gold did us no good.

I had a love so strong that nothing else mattered. Carissia was more important than anything else in the world to me - but had I made a mistake? I felt the longing of separation, like I had been ripped away from her at the heart. When would I see her again? When Marina Silva left the Workers Party (PT) to join the Greens many observers said this would put environmental issues on the political agenda ahead of next year's presidential election race in which she is expected to run. I am not convinced that this will occur and there has been little sign in the four weeks since she made her announcement that the environment or the Greens have made much headway.

Snooker is the only word. Actually, it's a double snooker. Brazil has applied the coup de grace to Acting Head of Government Micheletti. He can yell and scream and jump up and down and tear-gas the demonstrators, but...he's been snookered.
