Subject: Shiites in Brasil? IP: Logged
Message: This is a paragraph from a November 3, New York Times article about Lula titled "Law and Politics Likely to Curb Power of Brazil's New Leader" by a Larry Rohter.
"But with victory in hand, the hard-liners, who are nicknamed the Shiites, are naturally hoping to see some of their aspirations fulfilled, the sooner the better. Even before the vote, in fact, these members, who account for 26 of the Workers' Party's 91 seats in the lower house of Congress, were already showing signs of straining at the bit."
Anyone know why they call themselves shiites? I would like to know the story behind it.
