Subject: wages in Brazil??? IP: Logged
Message:
Could anyone tell me in general what the cost of living and salaries
are like in Brazil. What is a average living wage? On a recent trip
to brazil a friend was tell me most shop/office girls only make
$R100 to $R150 a week, hotel maids maybe made that a month.
I know the wages in Brazil were low, but I didn't think they were
that low.

Message: Minimum monthly salary is R$200. About 30 million people in Brazil are not even making that much.
A salary of R$800 is already considered to be good with R$5000 per months putting you solidly in the upper-middle class.

Message: What about R$1500 per month? What class level would you be and could you live comfortably and safely in Rio? If not, how much would you need?

Message: R$1500...? Let's see... Probably knocking on the middle class door... but not quite there...
It would be hard to live comfortably in Rio for this amount of money... unless you are willing to settle in one of the poorer blue-color hoods in the North or West parts.

Message: Thanks, Boris. How much in reais would you need monthly at the minimum to live a comfortable middle-class life in zona sul? You said R$5,000 for upper middle class, so how much for middle-class? Are the nice sections of Niteroi across the bridge any less for middle class cost of living?

Message: You are welcome....
It depends on your definition of a 'comfortable lifestyle'. For example, you can rent a reasonably comfortable one-bedroom apartment just a few blocks form the beach for about R$900 (six months to an annual contract, the same apartment would cost you 1/2 of the price on 32 months lease.) With utility bills, maintenance fees and property taxes (routinely paid by the tenant) you are looking at R$1200 to R$1400 of lodging expenses per months alone. Food, transportation, medical insurance... let's say additional R$700...
The rest is up to you. Shall I say that R$3000 (a little less then R$1000) per month would make your life VERY comfortable in Rio.

Message: Actually liquid R$2000 does let you live as a middle class in the southern zone of Rio, it just doesn't stretch enough to have children, unless your family helps.

Message: John,
You are welcome. From what I heard from the friends and family, everything is half price up north...
