Message: Brazil is about to spend US$ 700 million on Jet Aircraft and has considered reopening its Nuclear weapons program. Why is money being spent on a massive redundant military machine when the countries economy is already in serious “intensive care”!
Who is the enemy exactly….bankrupt Argentina or a four legged commando unit of Llamas from Bolivia? The most likely threat to Brazil is from within its own borders…..economic instability, corruption, rampant crime, drug and wildlife smuggling. The only present external threat is from FARC guerrillas and possibly international terrorists.
Logic dictates that these “external threats” are not “Battlefield” Armies…..they are undercover “strike and run” units….therefore Tanks, Artillery, Aircraft Carriers are an expensive “White Elephant”. Surely the running costs of the military would be better spent on modernizing Brazils Intelligence services and Police force with Helicopters and fast patrol boats?
In my opinion the genuine threat to Brazil is not in the form of “Battlefield Armies” or Nuclear strikes, but in the form of crippling debt and currency devaluation. If the situation is allowed to deteriorate much further the enemy to the new Brazilian administration will come from its own ocean of impoverished citizens!
