Hi, Roy,
if money is no object you should buy yourself a Michaelis. They come in two tomes, and are the best there is Portuguese English, English Portuguese lexicon.
You can find several dics in this page, but I can't see the Michaelis. Houaiss is also a very good dictionary

Do you know a ballpark figure for the Portuguese-English
dictionary you mentioned? When you say 'if money is no

Black cover with reddish cinnamon 1" stripe across center where the word Portuguese is. It ia a bour 2 1/2" wide and about 5" tall and about 1 and 1/4" thick...easy to carry in back pocket when in Brazil...rarely a word is not covered.
www.sonia-portuguese.com has an incredible grammar book and now a course. And Sonia is there each day to tutor you on the net...totally cool and free well worth the very very very good book she puts out. And now CD's I think.
A fantastic tape and 2 books (also repeated in the advanced course or part 2) is Avenida Brazil from Luso-Brasilian books, etc.
The tapes in Avenida...are slow talking you can actually hear the words.

That's the dictionary (there is a second volume)
In Brazil, both cost together 160 reais. Bought in Brazil would be then very cheap (less than 50 bucks). You would have to look for it in the US if that's where you are. Even though some places might export it.
