Message:
there are many good travel books about Rio. Just visit a large book store.
the one i own personally is:
Insight Guides-Brazil Series-RIO DE JANEIRO
Published in 1998 by APA Publications.
Great book, very informative with large color pictures.
Good Luck!

Message: There are two excellent and current guides produced in Rio that are in both portugues and english in the same copy. I picked up one in Rio and the other at the Brazilian Trade Festival, but I am sure if you e-mail the places that publish them, they will send you a copy. They are Guia do Rio available from Riotur at riotur@pcrj.rj.gov.br and My Rio available from Taba Editora at tabaeditora@uol.com.br. I imagine you could write them in English, but here is a sample simple e-mail in portuguese:
Senhor(a):
Logo, estou planejando uma viagem à sua cidade. Por favor, me envie uma cópia atual da sua publicação Guia do Rio ou advise-me como eu posso consegui-la. Muito obrigado pela sua ajuda.
(your name)
(your address)
If they do not respond for some reason, there is a office of Riotur in Manhattan Beach, California who may be able to get you a copy. Their phone # is 310-643-2638. A travel agency answers but just ask to talk to someone from Riotur.
Good luck and enjoy your trip.

Message: I recently got back from a trip to Rio and before I left I did my fare share of research on where to stay and what to do during my stay. I think the more economical choice for accomidations is to rent a furnished apartment. I was lucky enough to find people in my home city (Seattle, WA) who where renting an apartment in Rio so I was able to actually meet them before handing over any money. They have since moved back to Rio and started a business of renting out furnished apartments in Rio. They are a very nice couple who have more than 20 apartments in different locations and price ranges throughout Rio. Take a look at their website http://www.spectralight.net
As far as books on Rio nothing can prepare you for what you are going to experience however The Lonley Planet puts out one of the best guide books that I have been able to find.
Good luck
Robert
