Subject: What about Gal? IP: Logged
Message: I'm not sure what to think about Gal Costa. A friend of mine
told me she's indicative of the best Brazil has to offer in terms
of female vocalists, but she kind of puts me to sleep. Am I not
listening to the right songs, or is she not so good? Is she
considered traditional, or is she kind of a 70s pop/elevator
disco kind of thing? Thanks for opinions/help.

Message: I loathe her material. "Elevator music" is too nice to describe
it. She hasn't had a hit in eons, either. You can have your
opinion but I myself don't like her.

Message: I think Gal Costa is the most beautiful voice ever heard on earth, well besides God herself.
Try listen to Part I of Gal sings Jobim...a recent release, sort of.
If you relate to Bebop, etc...Gal may be ancient history, but if Bossa puts you into Dream-land and not sleep...then go to B-Land and see Gal live while you can.

I like Gal's voice, but I don't like the music I've heard of her's. Very bland, melody-wise. I admit though, I have not heard much of Gal Costa's work.

Message: I once saw Gal Costa live in concert, supporting Daniela Mercury in Salvador. She was pretty boring. Some of her past few albums have improved and you can actually find a few good songs (but not too many) on these albums.
She does a good cover version of the song 'Chiclete com Banana' on the 'Festa Brasil' CD available on the Putumayo World Music label.
Her 'Gal Costa Unplugged' CD is a pretty good album, which I would recommend.
