Message: Okay, this is off-topic, but I'm curious how everyone got the
handles they use on brazzil.com. I see such interesting names
here, but some of them I don't know what they mean. Some
names are Portuguese, and I'd love to know the English
translation.
As for me, "Po" is what I was called as a little boy. (My name
is Paul.) The nickname stuck, and I've just kept it ever since.
So, how did you pick your name?

Message: What do you mean? How I didded get my name? You will have to ask my mama in Bologna the reason for this. I was named for Papa who was named for his papa. He was named for his papa who died while chopping wood.

Message: By the way, po,
your name with a cedilla (pô) can mean something very nasty
it's the abbreviation for porra (jism, sperm),
but many Brazilians use it today without thinking about the origin of the word
Today's lesson:
"Não encha o saco, pô!"
something like: don't bother me (don't fuck with me), shit

Message: I originally joined this board using the name "Sick of America", which in many aspects I am. I was asking how one can live permanently in Brasil. I am still considering it. I probably should learn Portuguese, eh? Anyway, I shortened it to Sick, and I can't really give an answer as to why I didn't change it.

Message: Nah, "po" is not that ofensive...Specially the way you would pronouce it...
and we often say "po" to avoid sounding offensive!Like you say "geez" instead of "Jesus"...
Gosh, I say "po" all the time...lol...I take it for granted that it came from such an offensive word...
Oh yeah, and I took my name because that's how they call the people who are born in Rio de Janeiro. I'm really proud of it.
