Does anyone know how Brazilian customs defines the year for the tourist visa's permitted 6 months to be counted within. Is it the calendar year, Jan1-Dec 31 or is it first entry? (For example if you first entered May 23, the year would be May 23 through May 22 of the next year.) Thanks.

So does that mean that if you first entered May 23, 2001, then went back March 22- June 21, 2002, that you would have 5 more months you could legally visit before may 23, 2003? And then if you went March 23-August 23, 2003, you could still stay till November because your new year started again in May?

No. The rule is max 180 days in any 12 month period.
