Exotic Product, Made in Brazil

In the list of products exported by Brazil, more than 7,000 items are considered exotic, such as needles for sewing machines and chicken eggs for incubation.

Brazil is diversifying its export basket. The larger part of Brazil’s US$ 70 billion revenue from foreign trade between January and February this year is tied to traditional products such as commodities, machines, foods and automobiles.

Brazilians, on the other hand, during the same period, exported more than 7,000 items considered exotic, such as hair for the manufacture of paint brushes, orchids, balloons and animals’ stomachs.

Brazil exported to France, Portugal and Mozambique, for example, US$ 140,000 in bovine semen.

The country also sold US$ 1.6 million in needles for sewing machines and US$ 131,000 in interphones.

There are yet other products such as medicinal soaps and chicken eggs for incubation in the export basket.

These items still represent very little in the Brazilian export trade balance, but their performance is improving.

The information is from the Ministry of Development, Industry, and Foreign Trade.

As for information technology, Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva says that what Brazil needs are good partners so as to produce more and better information.

Speaking recently at the inauguration of a Hewlett-Packard Technology Services Export Platform, Lula said Brazil has the capability and creativity to achieve digital inclusion.

“We do not want to be a developing nation forever. So we are moving ahead. We are going beyond being an exporter of raw material. We want to export knowledge and cutting edge technology,” said the President.

The government’s target is to export US$2 billion annually in software by the year 2007. At the moment, Brazil exports US$100 million in software.
