I am actually staying there with the family of an exchange student my family hosted. I have nothing but respect for the Brazilian culture and their people, especially their women and I don't intend to exploit any of them.

You should know, then, that sexual tourism is something very heavily discouraged in Brazil. I was in Recife a few years ago and noticed numerous posters decrying this practice. That may account for the reaction you got.
