Subject: Dengue in Sao Paulo and Minas Gerais?

Help! My wife and I are going to Sao Paulo, Belo Horizonte and Ouro Preto in March. (We are not going to Rio!) I am following daily the news about Dengue on the internet, including the Brazzil website. But I would like advice from anyone currently in Brazil about the following:

1) I know that the current Dengue epidemic is making inroads into Sao Paulo, but what are the chances that two tourists staying in Liberdade for three days would contract Dengue?

2) Does the higher altitude in Minas Gerais mean fewer mosquitoes? Is the epidemic expected to spread to Minas Gerais?

3) March in Brazil is supposedly the beginning of fall. Where I'm from in the upper midwest in the United States, fall means a gradual reduction in mosquitoes. Is this also true for Brazil, especially Minas Gerais?

4) How effective do you anticipate the government's emergency spraying and eradication efforts will be? Have such measures been effective in past Dengue epidemics in Brazil?

5) Any other information or advice for us?

Muito Obrigado!

-Patrick

I have spent a great deal of time in BH and Ouro Preto (and was there in December and January) and have had very little contact with mosquitoes in Minas Gerais, except in Governador Valadares where you probably don't want to go anyway.

I cannot speak for Sampa (São Paulo), I don't much care for the city and other than great nightlife and MASP, don't really think it has much to offer, but you will probably find similar conditions there.

If I can make a suggestion, if you have a car, I would encourage you to spend a couple of days at the Parque Natural da Caraça. It has great nature trails, lots of fascinating wildlife to see and a monastery where you can stay abnd see the priests feed the lobo guará, a kind of wild dog locally referred to as a wolf.

Don't miss Rio because of the dengue...stay in Copacabana and be sure to see the Sugarloaf and Corcovado. Ilha tropicais, Parati (Pousada Quiosque Internacional...is very nice) and buzios. All geared for the visitor and really something spectacular all in all and should not be missed. I lived in Rio for 2 years and never saw a mosquito.

Besides once in the South Pacific I gat dengue fever...for healthy people it is just a few days of flu and then lifetime immunity to the strain that got you. Not sure but perhaps the fatalities were of those in the poverty areas of Rio...you won't go there.

No Worries!!!

Dear Randy Paul and Jay,

We just got back from Brazil! Thank you for your replies to my inquiry about Dengue. Sure enough, it was not a problem in Sao Paulo or Minas Gerais. In fact, the only references to Dengue that I even encountered were in drug stores and the subway. Occasionally there would be a poster with a cartoon caricature of a big, nasty mosquito and a warning to eliminate any stagnant water in buckets, tires, etc.

You guys were the only two people to respond to my question about Dengue, and you gave me the confidence to go to Brazil despite the ominous headlines. My wife and I had a great time.

Thanks again!
