What is it like for a male in Brazilian High School. Will I get in any fights because I'm a white boy American. I don't speak you language, will it be easy to pick-up?

Mike, what city are you moving to? There are several american high schools in Brazil that you might be able to attend. There's some in Rio, Sao Paulo, Brasilia, Campinas, and other cities as well.

It is North of Rio, maybe a 100miles or more. Sounds like Malapadies.

Sounds like you should find a way to go to an American school in Rio, there's the Escola Americana (http://www.earj.com.br), and there's also Our Lady of Mercy (http://www.olmrio.com). You might be able to find a way to stay in Rio during the week and then go home on the weekends.

You could go to a Brazilian school and would learn better Portuguese, but you might have problems getting into US colleges afterwords, and you would have problems just getting up to speed with their curriculum, etc.

I went to an american school in another city in Brazil a long, long time ago, and it was the best experience of my life.

Good luck!

well, that's a million dollar question...

The good

Rio is one of the most beautiful cities in the world. The weather is hot, hot, hot in the summer (our winter) and it's very pleasant during their winter (our summer months). The people who live in Rio are, like most Brazilians, very warm and fun loving. Best of all, the women wear very, very tiny little bathing suits on the beach - oooh la la!

The Bad

Rio is a very big city, and feels like it. It is hectic and noisy and dirty.

As beautiful as the beaches around Rio are, don't swim there! Although you'll see people in the water, it is almost always unsafe due to high levels of bacteria from raw sewage. That's right, sewage.

The Ugly

There is also extreme poverty in evidence all around. Several million people live in shanty towns (called "favelas") in shacks, without proper sanitation and electricity, etc. There are gangs of roving children begging and sometimes stealing for food. Crime is very high.

The Really Ugly

There is evidence of a growing anti-american feeling down there. After September 11, I was shocked to find out that many Brazilian journalists were expressing the opinion that America had it coming. Even this crappy rag (Brazzil.com) published what was basically pro-terrorist propaganda (see the October 2001 issue). The Brazillians I know and that I have come across in my travels have always been very nice to me, the foreigner in their land, so I was shocked to discoverr this attitude.

I heard that the police are very strict and they torture people. Is this true? Can I avoid the bad people or are this people all over the place subways and etc. Is there a subway in Rio. I also heard that there are a lot of black people in Brazel(more than half). Is this true? Are the black people in Brazel like American black rappers and stuff?

Beware of the ravenous monkeys that kill people and giant snakes, Rio is in the middle of a dense jungle you know.

By the way, it's Brazil or Brasil, not Brazel you stroke.

now, now, now, be nice, we have a naive youngster on our hands here... maybe??

Anyway, just like any city, you are fairly safe in certain areas, and in definite danger in others. And no place is completely safe, although the touristy beach areas come pretty close...

black culture in Brazil is a completely different thing than the US... Prejudice is less overt, more subtle, so - this is just my theory here - the blacks are less militant and hostile than you might find in the US...

and never mind people like "sick" - there are a load of idiots who visit this board just to spew venom...

Hi Mike,

I want to comment what X-Pat said about the beaches polution. I grew up in Rio, the beach was my playground, so I can tell ya, that I never, never got sick because of the water, sometimes, they do some repairs on the sewage pipe and they warn the population that is unsafe to swim there, but watch out the sunburn.

Is that true? It was my understanding that the beaches are unsafe for swimming MOST of the time. For example, when I was there in July of 2000, the lifeguards told me it hadn't been safe for swimming since carnaval.

Of course, it wasn't this way until recent years. I had a great time there in the 70's and 80's.

It's hard to get clear and accurate information on this subject - I certainly hope you are correct - it seems almost criminal to destroy such a beautiful resource.

I currently live in Brazil and attend EARJ, i find Rio to be a wonderful city, just you have to know where to go and not to go. Most people are friendly and are willing to help. As long as you do not act like a ass. The beaches in Rio are ok, just do not go to copa, leblon, or ipanema, Barra is nice and clean, though it is very busy during the weekend.
