HELP Disco, South America's largest disco...is a super fun place. Safe, clean, good prices on drinks...non stop music and dancing till about 7:00 a.m.

And there are more girls than guys so you will not have a problem in meeting and dancing and finding a friend for your stay in Rio or a companion to travel around Brasil with.

Many people, visitors, go to Mab's or Meia Pataca sidewalk cafes on Ave. Atlantica for either a good meal or warm-up for the evening. The Meia Pataca is next door to the Othon Rio Hotel (swanky) and both are a 1/2 minute walk to Help. Mab's is 1/2 block from Ave. Princesa Isabel (the one to the big tunnel to Rio Sul shopping). At Mab's ask for Santuza a wonderful women who works with visitors to set you up with anything. She is a dear friend to many return visitors and will convert your $ into Reais at the best rate and you can easily trust her with a few hundred and she will be back in 5-15 minutes. SAntuza is dark skinned and a bit robust and very nice and friendly, and trustworthy. I have know her for 10 years already on 15 trips to rio and having lived in Rio for 2 years.

By 9:00 pm or earlier these 2 places are packed with visitors and Brasilian girls looking to find friends and hangout in a fun social setting. Few speak English, but know some Spanish. By about midnight there is a shift to the huge sidewalk cafe in front of Help (hel-pee) Disco where sometimes there are a few hundred people hanging out waiting to go into Help at about 1:00 am or later and stay until 4 am or dawn.

A recommendation is that exactly next door to Help is a restaurant bldg. whose upstairs has a very nice bar and restaurant (Sobre das Ondas...Above the Waves)and live Brasilian jazz band and singers and dancing and meals. A little pricey but hanging at the bar with a beer listening to the beautiful music...waiting for the Help to "warm" up is a nice choice over sitting on the sidewalk cafe's tables and chairs down at the street.

The girls at and in front of Help and the 2 mentioned sidewalk cafes are very forward so be prepared to meet very many of them.

But also Rio is a first class City and has many and many types of clubs throughout the City. Discos, Samba, jazz, young, older, forro, it just keeps going. Many are located around the Lagoa Freitas. Chico's Bar is real upscale jazz on the lagoa...close and safe...near Copacabana.

There is a need to be sure you are safe on the streets of Rio at night...make sure the taxi knows where you want to go and lets you off at the door with same for pick-up.

Carrinhosos is a live music dance bar that locals go to. The crowd is adult and the music and singing is beautiful...it is a place where you could meet s lady but better to bring one as it is very romantic.

ALSO ANOTHER large live music dance hall is exactly next door to the entrance to the tram to the Pao de Acucar (Sugarloaf), there, there are many local people, and local girls probably less forward then the girls of Help.

Either way you will have a blast. The Bierklausen dance club, live music for upscale locals is really cool also...it's in Centro so be sure you know how to get there.

Tchao...

everything you say is probably true, but you left one thing out... those "very forward" girls in help are 99 percent in the category that we call "working girls." They are friendly, but for a price.

Not that there's anything wrong with this, but I think a traveler should be aware of what he/she should expect to find in this place. If that's what you want, go for it!

Where do you not pay for diversao...entertainment. "Working" is right and who works for free. And how many of these women would not drop their lifestyle for a marraige and opportunity to live in another environment.

Some are dedicated to a Help lifestyle while some are looking for opportunity. Are they any different than the women in other parts of Rio or any other city on the world.

Looking for happiness, an enjoyable life, perhaps a family...and not at the poverty level.

Hats off to the Help Disco and all who participate...did you ever go there and not have fun. It is at least spectacularly visual...though not as much as the Sambodromo...and where can you meet a friend in Rio if you do not speak Portuguese...to take to the Sambodromo...or out for a romatic evening.

Vai pra Help...

well, there is, in my mind, a big difference between a woman who sells her body for cash, and one who doesn't.

I find it sad that economic conditions make this the only option for huge numbers of women in places like Brazil.

Anyway, bottom line is, if you want hookers, go to Help. If you want to go to a nice nightclub with friendly women who are not hookers, go somewhere else (outside of that area of Copacabana, I might add).
