I have been told that to be allowed to stay in Brazil you need to have one hundred dollars for every day of your stay. Is this true?
How much in dollars can you get by on in Brazil? I have tried to find this out but have had some difficulty.

No, it is no true

Depending on where you wish to stay and your expected level of comfort you can reasonably get by on $40 to $80 per day for lodging, food, and entertainment.

it seems you are under the impression that you must show $ at arrival...I've entered B-Land 15 times and never had to show cash or Trav Chks...but it has been, sadly, almost 5 years since I have lived in Brasil; so if there has been a recent change of entry policy I have no idea.

Lifestyles is correct on cost of living...

This is the craziest thing I have ever heard. Trust me, it is not true. The only thing I have ever been asked "proof" of was my return plane ticket and my visa of course.

Put your mind at ease, it's not true.

i just returned from rio yesterday.....what an awesome place....
as a very "general rule", just take you normal living expense (assuming you are american) and divide that expense by 3....
things really are inexpensive in brazil....in rio, and, even more so in outer lying cities...

examples:
2 people eat at mcdonalds = 12 real (approx US $4)
hotel: 125-200 real (approx US $40-75)
very good meal for 2 = 50-100 real (US $10-35)
beer/chopp = 1-2 real (US $0.50 - 0.75)

if you want additional info, please feel free to email me...
