Brazzil It was recently brought to my attention by a reader of
Brazzil, that in my January 2002 article, "The Finest Art," -

incorrect biographical information about Brazilian artist Francisco Brennand. After contacting Senhor Brennand personally, it should be clarified that the Brennand family
immigrated to Brazil from England, and not Ireland. Also, the Brennand family never worked as peasant farmers, but as associates in English companies. Additionally, Brennand
Senior was not a nouveau riche, as the family had obtained wealth in earlier generations. Finally, Francisco Brennand spent a total of less than three years studying not only
in Paris, but throughout Europe. This is opposed to the thirty years of uninterrupted study in France that I claimed.
Unfortunately, the book I referenced (Lonely Planet. Brazil. Bookmaker Pty Ltd. China. 1998, p. 507) includes false information about the artist. Of course this does
not serve as an excuse, as I should have cross-referenced more materials during my research.
My apologies go to Senhor Brennand, whose artwork I do admire. Despite biographical inaccuracies, the focus of my article remains the same. The purpose of the
article is to present the artwork of Paulo Rama to a wider audience here in the US, and abroad. Although the plight of the "starving artist" is universal, it appears that
Afro-Brazilians, and blacks throughout the African Diaspora face greater obstacles to becoming successful artists. It remains my objective to engage this topic in dialogue, and help
open a pathway to change.
(It should also be noted that the "Mercado Pobre" mentioned in the article is actually called the "Mercado Pop")
I am curious as to the source of the UN definition you use—"Big City Nightmare"—

for a definition of state of war. If such an approach is used in defining war, it would be on a percentage basis, not gross numbers. 25,000 in a small country might mean
the definition of war is never met. I suspect your assertion "According to UN guidelines, a country with over 25,000 assassinations per year is considered in a state of war..."
in inaccurate, and it weakens your coverage of the situation in Brazil.
I am not a Brazilian, although ever since I was 13 (over 30 years ago) I have wanted to be one. I am a Brit now living in Canada. Since I found your website I have
been to it daily reading articles and entering the forum. I have a very serious question regarding immigration/permanent status in Brazil which I have not seen asked or
addressed ever before. I have written to several agencies in Brazil (Immigration services as well as two government agencies specifically dealing with immigration) regarding my
question and not received any answers. Would anyone there know how I could get an answer to an immigration question? Hoping someone can come up with an idea.

You're crazy, folks! Topless beaches in Bahia? Surely you jest. (The Summer of the Topless -
www.brazzil.com/p06jan00.htm). I've lived in Salvador for the last five
years, spent a lot of time on beaches from the litoral norte, to Morro, Boipeba, Barra Grande, and down to Porto Seguro, Arraial, Trancoso, and Caraíva.
There is ONE beach in Trancoso ("nudism") where some people go
topless sometimes. (On a rare occasion in high summer you might see some European trying to
go fully nude. They don't last long.) Topless is a rarity. I've never ever seen a person nude on the beaches near Salvador.
Why spread this misinformation about Brazil? The vast majority of
Brasileiras wouldn't be caught dead going topless. There are no topless beaches in Rio either.
My girlfriend is a Carioca and she grew up in Copacabana and hung out every summer day from the age of 14 to 20 on the beach in Ipanema—she laughs when people
ask about the "topless beaches." Even the "victory" of some 40-something women two years back didn't change a thing.

As a Formula 1 fan, I consider the Ferrari's attitude in the Austrian Grand Prix 2002 very dirty, deplorable and unsportlike, to say the least. Barrichelo made a
perfect work since Friday, but his deserved victory was denied by some very narrow-minded people. They did not need to do such dirtiness!
This event will bring serious damage to Ferrari's image. Here in Brazil, Ferrari has instantly lost 170 millions fans and I hope it will lose a lot more in the World,
including sponsors, as they will not want their images linked to dirty people.

It was mentioned to me to search for a medicine in Brazil that helps to get someone

story is a synopsis of what happened and the moral is: be careful of what you say to people when they ask you what do you plan to do with them and never say Internet.
I am glad big-buttock women are so popular in Brazil and the American fashion of androgynous women with the seams of their trousers sticking untidily and

I am trying to reach Robert Olsen, the visa officer of the U.S. consulate in São Paulo who brought the lawsuit against them for discrimination

Hello Liz, I was delighted to read the account of your and your husband's vacationing in Brazil (www.brazzil.com/blamar02.htm). It was at one time
informative, entertaining and funny—the "percussion class" for the
berimbau you brought over was hilarious! The Amazon does sound exotic, and so does the Iguaçu Falls,
especially for a Paulistano like myself. Indeed Brazil is a continental country that deserves being visited, little by little.
I wonder what your singing is like. In any case, I am positive that combining jazz and
bossa nova could only result in magic, spellbound music. Have you by any chance ever gotten to listen to Brazilian singers Marisa Monte and Zizi Posse? As for the latter, I strongly recommend her
Valsa Brasileira, which features a great selection of
chorinho, a root samba kind of music, only with modern arrangements—great percussion work to boot. As for the former, her
Rose and Charcoal (it was released in the world market) is a masterpiece, with Marisa's own rendition of old classics amid new tunes inspired by the Bahia drums. Really a gem.
I hope you keep up your musical endeavors and that you have a chance of hitting Brazil another time—maybe bringing your little ones along next time!

was interesting how your love for the music brought you down there.... I am also a jazz and
bossa nova-lover... and living in New York City now, it is just perfect to
experience the best jazz has to offer (and believe it or not,
bossa nova as well). Hope you go get a chance to go back to Rio... it is a fascinating place. Definitely reserve more than
two days next time. I was in Rio for 15 days last August and wanted to stay forever... Just loved it.
Dear Liz, I so enjoyed your article about your trip to the land of so much beauty! I made my first trip there just a few months before you! I found the words wow falling
from my mouth from the time we flew in to São Paulo and landed in Rio! As soon as I got off the plane I felt the love that these people have for their talented
Cariocas and the music that they write! And that is the main reason that we went to Rio.
I too am a jazz vocalist and I live in Cleveland…and I love Brazilian music. My husband, Peter, and myself came to Rio for our 10th wedding anniversary. Our first
night was spent in Vinicius bar, above Garota de Ipanema cafe, listening to a wonderful guitarist/vocalist who was named Uri—we received his CD and were graced with
an appearance by the son of the late Baden Powell, Marcel Powell.
He was a phenomenal talent. And there is definitely something to be said for gene pools! We also went to a great jazz club called Mistura Fina's—you must check
both of those places out when you go back to Rio! We also loved Garota de Ipanema—we spent many an afternoon sipping on
caipirinhas! Our waiter was such a cutie pie!
He played itty bitty harmonicas like I have never seen! He was also quite good at chess! And weren't the bands of musicians on the streets wonderful?
Oh, meu Deus! It is so good to be able to talk to someone who has had just as wonderful a time and as beautiful a memory as Brazil leaves you with. We have many
Brazilian friends who are also musicians living here in Cleveland! We have such wonderful times together recording the music and having jam sessions, although I must admit

É muito difícil viver em outro país e ter a mínima idéia do que está acontecendo em outro país especialmente quando falamos de política. Eu li hoje no meu jornal
aqui que não existe um candidato mais perto do que 20 por cento de popularidade de Lula e que a percentagem para ele é 40 por cento. O medo das pessoas que
investem dinheiro é baseado no que ele falou no passado, que ia puxar o Brasil para a esquerda e fazer do país uma nação socialista. O que ele disse na entrevista não foi
ruim, a questão é se ele está dizendo isto para ser eleito ou porque acredita mesmo. Em Inglês temos uma expressão, "a leopard does not change its spots," quer dizer se

pontuação da língua portuguesa. Eu sou brasileira residente nos Estados Unidos, todos os dias que vejo o noticiário há sempre alguma coisa negativa sobre o Brasil.
Um país onde a ignorância e falta de educação escolar continuam tão alta, antes do povo começar a falar inglês, os educadores e as pessoas de nível
intelectual aprimorado com influência pública, deveriam fortalecer a necessidade de falar-se bem a própria língua. Eu espero que esta transição para o inglês nunca realmente
ocorra, pois um inglês também mal falado pode ser muitas vezes motivo de embaraço devido à similaridade de pronúncia de determinadas palavras.
É muito preferível um país conhecido pela qualidade de sua educação e que se expresse na forma oral e escrita de maneira correta do que duas línguas que
são cheias de erros gramaticais. Na área de educação seria de grande benefício informação sobre outras culturas de forma mais popular como filmes, livros, programas
de televisão em forma de documentários como se encontra em países onde nem toda a população pode tirar férias no exterior.
Todos os dias é com orgulho que escuto pessoas se referirem ao meu sotaque e quando são informadas de que o meu primeiro idioma é o português brasileiro,
ficam felizes e começam a falar sobre este país tão maravilhoso e sua cultura que é o Brasil.
Eu espero que principalmente os educadores usem sua influência e mantenham o aprendizado da nossa língua portuguesa prioridade. Não quero dizer que
não se aprenda o inglês, mas antes de tudo corrija o que está errado.
