The joint effort of Brazil and African countries in the World Trade Organization (WTO), and the Brazilian interest of acquiring a permanent seat in the United Nations (UN) Security Council were the highlights of the speeches of both Presidents Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, of Brazil, and Paul Biya, of The Republic of Cameroon, during dinner at the Presidential Palace.
“It is unacceptable that entire continents such as Africa, with 54 countries, do not have representation at the UN Security Council,” said Lula.
“We cannot be passive observers of decisions that affect our destiny,” affirmed Lula referring to a partnership between Brazil and African countries to defend common interests in the WTO.
Brazilian President defended that the international commerce may help in the elimination of hunger and poverty.
“Together, we must fight against the heavy subsidies and protective measures practiced by rich countries,” he added.
In his speech, Lula mentioned that The Republic of Cameroon was one of the most receptive countries in the process of re-approximation of Brazil and the African continent. Reason why Brazil decided to reopen its embassy in Yaounde. “Our decision is a bet on the re-approximation with Cameroon and the entire continent,” affirmed Lula.
President Paul Biya said that Lula arrived to his country with the “deserved title of champion in the fight against poverty.” For Biya, this reason gives Brazilian government accreditation for a permanent seat in the UN Security Council. He also considers important that Brazil and Cameroon, together, defend common interests at the WTO.
