Brazil’s TAM Picks Unisys to Be IT Honcho

TAM, Brazil’s largest global airline, has signed a five-year contract with Unisys in order to get IT infrastructure services. The services will support more than 7,000 TAM employees in 300 locations worldwide (260 in Brazil and 40 around the world).

TAM hopes that Unisys management of its IT infrastructure will help the airline company improve service levels and keep control over operational costs by providing single-point-of-contact service management through the Unisys Managed Services Center (MSC) in Veleiros, Sao Paulo.

The services offered include: program management to coordinate service delivery worldwide; support for approximately 5,000 desktops, PCs, laptops and thin clients, as well as for critical TAM operational applications; remote software distribution; asset and logistics management; configuration and release management, enabling TAM to standardize computer configurations, software and equipment localization and equipment maintenance and administration, including installs, moves, adds and changes.

“We selected Unisys for its proven IT infrastructure outsourcing and global service management expertise and delivery capabilities,” said Maricelio Lauand, TAM’s chief information officer.

“The services will help TAM to improve its operational efficiency and strategic growth. The outsourcing allows us to concentrate on our core business, and also helps us to improve the quality of our services to TAM clients in Brazil and worldwide.”

Unisys has more than 50 years of experience in the global transportation market – providing technology and consulting services for more than 100 airports, 200 airlines and top logistics organizations around the globe.

“With the global airline industry facing increasingly intense pressure to satisfy customers with quality service and low costs while still expanding their businesses, airlines such as TAM are making smart choices to outsource some core operations to expert services partners,” said Deborah Guerra, vice president and general manager, Unisys Global Infrastructure Services, Brazil.

“With more than 50 companies in Brazil benefiting from Unisys infrastructure outsourcing services delivered through the Unisys MSC, and with extensive consultant experience in the transportation market, Unisys clearly has the services delivery infrastructure and management processes to help TAM achieve its key business goals.”

TAM has been the leader in the Brazilian Aviation market since July 2003. The company closed 2003 with 20,8% growth in number of passengers against 2002.

In 2004, TAM registered a profit of over 341 million (in Brazilian Reais currency, equivalent to US$ 100 million) – which means a 96,3% growth comparing to the past year. In February, the company registered a 41,79% market share.

TAM flies to 41 cities from Brazil. Following operational agreements with regional carriers, TAM is able to reach 66 different regions in the national territory. International operations currently include: Miami (USA), Paris (France), Buenos Aires (Argentina) and Santiago (Chile).
