Echoing Brazil, UN Urges Urgent Reform of Security Council

The representative of the secretary general of the UN at the G-77 meeting, Louise Frechette, stated today, at the opening of the summit, in Qatar, that it is important for the organization’s reform to take place by September, when the UN assembly general will meet, in New York.

A declaration regarding the need for reform of the organization has already been made by the UN secretary general, Kofi Annan, in an official report.

The Second South Summit, whose activities began on Sunday, will end tomorrow. The meeting is bringing together representatives and heads of state of the 132 countries that are members of the group.

Brazilian President, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, is not participating in the meeting. Brazil is being represented by diplomat Antonio Patriota. None of the South American countries sent heads of state to the meeting.
