Brazil Resumes Beef Exports to US

This week Brazil began exporting industrialized beef to the US once again. Exports were suspended in May due to a need for adjustments in sanitary clauses in the export-import agreement between the two countries.

The animal inspection division at Brazil’s Ministry of Agriculture (Defesa Agropecuária do Ministério da Agricultura, Pecuária e Abastecimento) (MAPA), reports that six meatpacking firms have been authorized to restart exports to the US.

Three Brazilian laboratories will control the quality of the products. Meanwhile, United States agricultural officials carried out inspection tours of the facilities last month.

MAPA data shows that Brazil exported industrialized beef worth US$ 197 million to the US in 2004.
