13 Brazilian Congressmen Still Being Considered for Expulsion

The president of Brazil’s Chamber of Deputies Ethics Council, Ricardo Izar (PTB, São Paulo), said, Wednesday, November 30, that, once a vote has been taken on the motion to deprive deputy José Dirceu (PT, São Paulo) of his mandate, the tendency will be to speed up consideration of the other 13 motions that are still before the Council.

He went on to say that five of the motions are already "well along." These involve deputies João Paulo Cunha (PT, São Paulo), Pedro Henry (PP – Mato Grosso), Pedro Corrêa (PP, Pernambuco), Roberto Brant (PFL, Minas Gerais), and Professor Luizinho (PT, São Paulo).

Izar informed that, as soon as the rapporteurs responsible for these cases submit their reports, he will immediately schedule a vote in the Council. Izar believes that at least two motions will be submitted to a floor vote in the Chamber by December 20: the cases involving João Paulo Cunha and Pedro Corrêa.

"We are working calmly, but we have deadlines to meet," he affirmed. He does not rule out the possibility that some of the deputies will escape expulsion.

"Among the 13 cases, it may be that 1 or 2 do not result in mandates being revoked, but the tendency in the Ethics Council is to analyze them case by case, with all due attention," he said.
