According to the United States Secretary of Commerce, Carlos Gutierrez, trade partnerships based on free enterprise between Brazil, the United States, and the other countries of the American continent represent the key to reducing poverty in these countries and dealing with global competition.
Gutierrez was in Rio de Janeiro on Monday, June 5, to participate in the International Conference of American Chambers of Commerce in Latin America.
Gutierrez underscored the progress made by Latin American countries in electing democratic governments committed to creating jobs and improving social justice.
In his view, this "means a diminution, not a redistribution, of poverty; it means respecting individual rights, and when we negotiate a free trade agreement, we open the way to growth and job creation, which are the bases of genuine social justice."
During the conference he announced the launching of the US-Brazil Trade Dialogue, which he defined as a channel for the expansion of cooperation and trade between the countries and the region.
"The general intention of our Trade Dialogue focuses the steps the two countries can take to increase our mutual competitiveness. Improving customs procedures is one way do accomplish this," he said.
