Brazilian Woman Still Missing in New Orleans After Hurricane Katrina

Brazil’s Ministry of Foreign Relations reports that following hurricane Katrina it received requests for information on 103 Brazilians who were believed to have been in the area at the time of the disaster. So far 84 Brazilians have been located and no deaths of Brazilians have been reported.

However, there is one case that is causing concern. Benilda Caixeta Daniels, 57, a Brazilian from the state of Minas Gerais, who is a naturalized American, remains missing.

She is a handicapped person who uses a wheelchair. The last news her family in Brazil received was just before the hurricane hit when she told them she was unable to leave her apartment in New Orleans.

A mission from the Brazilian consulate in Houston has been in Baton Rouge since September 12, to help locate missing Brazilians.
