5000 Journalists from 67 Countries Coming to Brazil’s WSF

The 5th World Social Forum (WSF), which will take place from January 26 to 31 in Porto Alegre, in the south of Brazil, already has over 70 thousand people enrolled from 120 countries.

The organizers expect over 100 thousand people to participate in the event, which has 1.9 thousand activities programmed, among debates, depositions, conferences, and cultural events.

Eleven major thematic guidelines were chosen by the participants and will orient the discussions at the gathering.

Construction of the areas where the activities will take place is in its final stage.

The constructions, which occupy 150 thousand square meters, were budgeted at US$ 1.6 million (4.4 million reais).

Around 80% of the space that will be used for the debates comprises canvass tents.

The rest is composed of “bioarchitecture”: eight halls with walls made of rice, wheat, and barley chaff, roofs made of grass, and structures made of eucalyptus.

Over five thousand journalists representing 1,128 media organizations from 67 countries are already enrolled to cover the event.

The investment required to hold the Forum came to US$ 5.1 million (14 million reais).
