Brazilian Beef on Its Way to Tsunami Victims

The Brazilian Beef Industry and Exporters Association (Abiec), entity which gathers 17 slaughterhouses responsible for 95% of Brazil’s exports, is donating 20 tons of beef for the victims hit by the tsunamis, in  Asia and Africa.

The shipment will take place January 3 through the Port of Santos, on the coast of the state of São Paulo, directly to the port of Indonesia, according to information from Abiec.

The entity’s donation is a joint action with the federal government, which will be responsible for the container’s logistics. The Abiec is shipping different cuts of beef as well as canned beef, which may be kept closed for up to five years in room temperature.

On January 7, the third shipment of Brazilian donations to Southeast Asia left Brazil for Indonesia. This shipment contained nine tons of water and seven tons of medications. The mission also transported specialists from the Armed Forces and the Ministries of Health, Agriculture, and Foreign Relations.

Last week, during the V World Social Forum (WSF), held in Brazil, a proposal signed by hundreds of organizations asked for the cancellation of the foreign debt of countries in the South, especially those that suffered the consequences of the tsunami.
