Irreverent, sensual without being crass, author Joyce
Cavalcante has focused her writer’s eye on the resigned lives of women
bred for generations to pray, marry and die. She has woven these elements
into all her books, while living in Rio de Janeiro, where she learned about
life in the big city, as well as in New York City, Washington D.C., and
São Paulo, where she currently lives and works.

Mandolin virtuoso Mike Marshall has proven once again that choro
is alive and well. Widely known for his performances and recordings
with The David Grisman Quintet, Montreux, The Modern Mandolin Quartet,
and Choro Famoso, Marshall has just released his Brasil Duets on
the EarthBeat label. The disc is a must for devotees of acoustic music
and for those with a passion for choro.

A cornucopia of choro, Brasil Duets features works by
Brazil’s greatest choro composers including Hermeto Pascoal, Egberto
Gismonti, Pixinguinha, Jacó do Bandolim, and Severino Araújo.
Innovative arrangements and a stellar line up of guest artists like Jovino
Santos Neto, Bela Fleck, Andy Narell, and Michael Manring make Brasil
Duets a vital link in the long choro tradition of virtuoso instrumentalists
that stretches back to the turn of the century when European immigrant
musicians blended their musical traditions with the African and indigenous
rhythms of Brazil.

This recording belongs in the collection of every serious listener of
Brazilian music. Celebrate choro with Mike Marshall’s Brasil Duets.
