Brazil’s PMDB Decides Not to Expel Party Members with Posts in Cabinet

The National Executive board of the PMDB approved a proposal last week to withdraw a remonstrance from the party’s Ethics Council against party members who hold high positions in the Administration.

Some state committees wanted the party’s Ethics Council to rule on the expulsion of party members who hold Cabinet positions.

According to the petition, the ministers are disobeying a December, 2004, decision by the National Convention in favor of cutting all ties between the PMDB and the Administration.

With the approval of the proposal, presented by Rio state secretary, Anthony Garotinho, the two PMDB ministers, Saraiva Felipe (Health) and Hélio Costa (Communications), no longer run the risk of being expelled from the party.

The president of the PMDB, federal deputy Michel Temer (São Paulo state), said that approval of the proposal constitutes an attempt to ensure party unity.
