Brazil’s Lula Gung-Ho on Integrating South America

In his weekly radio program, Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva highlighted the increase of almost 100% (98.4% to be exact) in Brazilian exports to the rest of South America.

“We are exporting manufactured goods, cell phones, cars, autoparts. We are creating riches for Brazil and the rest of the continent, more jobs in Brazil and more jobs throughout the whole region,” said the President.

Lula also spoke of the South American Community summit this week in Brasília. “The creation of the South American Community unifies procedures, moves us ahead toward integration and facilitates the discussion of development. We are talking about roads and business partnerships,” he said, adding that the result was going to be better airports, ports and highways.

Speaking of integration, Lula mentioned a number of endeavors, such as the highway that will link Brazil with Chile and the Pacific Ocean, and a gas pipeline being built together with Argentina.

Domestically, Lula cited the BR116 highway running from southern to northeastern Brazil, connecting Porto Alegre and Fortaleza, as well as the BR101 in southern Brazil.

“These are highways that will transport Mercosur goods. We are talking about integration highways,” he concluded.
